Combing the racks of her own store for kitschy records, Esselink took snippets of old records to make new ones, creating her own style of lo-fi techno-pop." Sharp was born in Maryland on December 14, 1971. A neurological disorder that caused her brain to read music as pleasure led Sharp to learn several instruments in her teen years. After playing in several bands, she had a memorable stint with New Radiant Storm King as a drummer. She relocated to New York City, shared a practice space with a friend with recording equipment, and started getting notices for her photography. She also began recording herself, mostly by her lonesome out of convenience, but also because she didn't want anyone else involved, anyway. So, Sharp became the sole member of Ill Ease."    0:33:11 (Pop-up)

The eerie yet comfortingly familiar echoes of lounge and library music shaped into a dream of the future. Lena Platonos  What's New Pussycat?   Favoriting Galop RE  Dark Entries  2015  ‘Γκάλοπ’ (‘Gallop’) was Lena Platonos' second record that she solely composed, produced and sang. The record was released in 1985 and paved the way for Greek electronica of the 1990's. ‘Gallop’ was composed in the wake of a painful separation, and took several months to complete. Lena says, “It’s a study in the mythology of urban population of the contemporary metropolis and also a gaze into the future life of it.” The album is made exclusively using analog synthesizers and heavily features the iconic Roland TR-808 drum machine. Lena narrates each song, reciting her own surreal Greek poetry with unique skill. Lyrics deal with heartbreak, dreams, desires, and astutely predict the way that computers and technology would infiltrate our society in the years to come. ‘Gallop’ is an album ahead of its time, both musically and conceptually.    0:57:05 (Pop-up)
Grazia  Soyle Beni   Favoriting Grazia  Koliphone  1978  Grazia Peretz, Jaffa, Israel Psychedelic Folk singer, was a young Israeli teen star way ahead of her time in accordance with her unsuccessful debut release, Grazia!, a record now seen as an infamous 70′s musical gem. Resurrected from the dark, Fortuna Records reissue the album in 2013. Recorded when Grazia was only 16, her debut was released through Koliphone Records and, accompanied by keyboard player Marko Bachar, featured a folk foundation fused with many radical Moog synth textures and disco grooves. Due to its outlandish style, it sadly wasn’t popularized at the time.    1:00:41 (Pop-up)

Karen Anne Carpenter was an American singer and drummer who, along with her elder brother Richard, was part of the duo the Carpenters. With a distinctive three-octave contralto vocal range, she was praised by her peers as one of the greatest singers ever. Her struggle with and eventual death from anorexia would later raise awareness of eating disorders and body dysmorphia. Initially, Carpenter was the band's full-time drummer, but gradually took the role of frontwoman as drumming was reduced to a handful of live showcases or tracks on albums.

Singer Nora Dean was one of reggae’s greatest mysteries including her birth year which some sources quote as 1952. She recorded solo and as a member of The Ebony Sisters, The Soul Sisters and The Soulettes. She did backing vocals on recordings by Jimmy Cliff. Although she was not a prolific artist (especially by reggae standards), a number of her songs are very fondly remembered by fans of Jamaican music as true reggae classics. No interviews with her have ever been published. Photos seemed to be non-existent.

They released their highly acclaimed debut album Other Animals in 2001, followed by At Crystal Palace in 2003, both on the Troubleman Unlimited label. The group began counting Sonic Youth, Mission of Burma and The Ex among their fans. After founding guitarist Sara Jaffe left Erase Errata in 2004, singer Jenny Hoyston switched to guitar and the group briefly drafted a male vocalist named Archie McKay. The Raincoats  Shouting Out Loud   Favoriting Odyshape  We 3  1981  Ana Da Silva, Gina Birch & Vicky Aspinall formed the core of The Raincoats, collectively swapping instruments & lyrics. Drummer Palmolive (Paloma Romero) left the group after the debut album & the group briefly replaced her with Ingrid Weiss, who drums on this track. Gina Birch writes: "We auditioned lots of people, until we found Ingrid, who was very young but had a strong powerful style of drumming. At our first meeting she told us she wanted to be a taxidermist, but we didn't let that put us off!" "...The way we structured the songs was always precarious and experimental, using odd time signatures, time changes, slowing down and speeding up. We always enjoyed playing ambitious configurations. If the audience could cope with that, then we were very popular, but many people found this difficult to deal with."    1:24:22 (Pop-up)

Finally Punk  Missile   Favoriting Casual Goths  Army Of Bad Luck/Germs Of Youth  2006  Finally Punk lineup: Elizabeth Skadden, Erin Budd, Stephanie Chan, Veronica Ortuño. -- This was something I purchased without knowing anything about it. Reasons: 1) A band named "Finally Punk" releasing an album called "Casual Goths" is fantastic. 2) The front cover shows the band laying on top of three washing machines with their feet on the wall & their heads hanging over the front, upside down, looking like they are having a lot of fun (& therefore unlikely to be goths). The back reads: "Self-Titled" "Primary Colors" "Hypertension" "+" "Army Of Bad Luck/Germs Of Youth" "Recorded In Austin Texas / New York". 3) The insert revealed the fact there were 26 songs on the record and that it was compiled over 4 years (2005-2009). 4) The vinyl is lavender-marble, with white cobwebs on the black label. 5) It was affordable. 6) It seemed foolish not to buy this album I had never heard & had no idea about. --- All these observations proved to lead to an excellent choice.    1:32:40 (Pop-up)
Dishrags  I Don't Love You   Favoriting Last Call: Vancouver Independent Music 1977-1988  Zulu Records  1979  "Originally known as Dee Dee and the Dishrags... In honour of Dee Dee Ramone... The band was formed in 1976 in Victoria, British Columbia, a city 60 miles from Vancouver, and included the trio of high school students Jade Blade (lead guitar, vocals), Carmen "Scout" Michuad (drums), and Dale Powers (bass guitar). Moving to Vancouver, with its burgeoning punk rock scene, the Dishrags opened for the city's first punk concert, sharing the bill with the Furies at the Japanese Hall on July 30, 1977. The band performed sporadically thereafter while also attending high school in Victoria, and inspired the formation of three other punk female groups, the Visitors, Devices, and Zellots. In 1978, the Dishrags returned to Vancouver where they gave many performances, including a concert at the Commodore Ballroom with the Clash in January 1979... On a dare, The Dishrags encored their set with The Clash's London's Burning; The Clash dedicated their version to The Dishrags. The Dishrags also had the honour of both opening and closing for The Ramones in Seattle. With The Dishrags having opened for Dee Dee and the boys, Joey was too ill to perform so The Dishrags finished the show for them to an appreciative audience... By contributing the song "I Don't Love You", the band made its recording debut on the influential compilation album, Vancouver Complication, in 1979."    1:33:52 (Pop-up)

With only 4 days in the studio to record, Hatch emerged with a halting masterwork that shares a name with it’s progenitor: T.O.N.T.O." "...A very large modular synthesizer originally assembled by Malcom Cecil and Robert Margouleff. (The name is an acronym for "The Original New Timbral Orchestra".) The instrument began as a Moog modular purchases by Margouleff in 1969; he combined it with a second Moog in 1971 to make one larger modular. To this was then added an ARP 2600 and a bank of Oberheim SEM's, and the instrument began to snowball, with Cecil and Margouleff adding nearly anything modular that they could get their hands on, including some modules designed and built by Cecil himself. In 1974, they brought in Rex Probe and a team of people from Serge Modular, who built a number of Serge circuits and mounted them behind Moog-like faceplates, and added them to the system."    1:41:53 (Pop-up)

At the insistence of Warhol, she sang on four songs of the Velvet Underground's debut album The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967). At the same time, she started a solo career and released Chelsea Girl. Nico's friend, Jim Morrison, suggested that she start writing her own material. She then composed songs on a harmonium, not traditionally a rock instrument. John Cale of The Velvet Underground became her musical arranger and produced The Marble Index, Desertshore, The End... and other subsequent albums. In the 1980s, she toured extensively in Europe, United States, Australia and Japan. Nina Simone  Suzanne   Favoriting To Love Somebody  Sony Music  1969  Rather than take the easy route of just belting the number out – or indeed playing the role of the male observer in the song – Simone instead embodies the mystical Suzanne. By doing so, by making the character even more real than we had previously thought, she does the impressive balancing act of adding grandeur to her iconography and weight to her ideals, all the while adding humour at the expense of her adorer.    2:01:43 (Pop-up)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm
Derek Westerholm:

Babs has a new half-cast, more impeded than before, but insisting on pushing through. We're trying to make sure there's a bit of space to heal, there, too.

WR:

Hi folks.

There are consequences. I took a nap when I should have been working, so now I am working when I could have been chilling. At least there is WFMU and no work calls to make me turn it down.

Coming out of lurkerville to express appreciation for Gudrun Gut and that song that mentioned fallopian tubes :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm

On the Oh-OK track I think I heard them slip in "Syncopated Clock" as counterpoint. Leroy Anderson was my favorite composer when i was Little Zip
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm

Kristine totally agreed, Solex is wonderful... That Malaria! show would have been something to see! I can't remember, did you see The Raincoats when they came to Toronto to promote the anniversary of their first album a handful of years ago? It was fantastic! The club was small and they hung out and talked all night. So great & down-to-earth.
  9:07pm

@Babs - I used to be stubborn about cleaning my records, but I have seen the light at how much it helps.

I'm still stubborn about storing the records in the sleeves. All my collector friends are like 'you're stressing the sleeves'. I figure the sleeve is meant for storing the record.
