That pic in Jamaica, Queens?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm
Sam Segal:

Yes, I believe it is, Slowly. Taken sometime in the 1980s. Thank you for being here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm
Sam Segal:

Was Benson & Hedges really America's Favorite 100? Can anyone verify that?
  10:12pm
Slowly:

Says so right there. Whence the doubt?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm
Sam Segal:

I doubt everything. It's a problem.
  10:15pm
Slowly:

I really doubt that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm
Sam Segal:

Sounds like you have the same issue I've got.

i think for a long time few people smoked 100mm cigarettes, so probably, for a while

WR:

Today Sam? Many happies!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
coelacanth∅:

hey when's this maxwell from? 'sounds like contemporary production, yet, it's really good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
Sam Segal:

Today is indeed the day, WR. Thanks for the happy happies!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm
Sam Segal:

@Coel, that Maxwell record is from 2009. So, it's getting a bit old at this point, but still technically "contemporary," depending on your definition, perhaps?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:27pm
coelacanth∅:

is this set so far all pretty recent?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
zzz:

evening all, happy bday SS!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
Sam Segal:

Yeah, the Maxwell was the oldest. The MMYYK is from 2021 and this Mr. Fingers is from 2018.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
Sam Segal:

Much appreciated, ZZZ!
Avatar 10:30pm
TDK60:

Happy b.day.

the standard "sound" hasn't changed much in this century, i think. i mean, i can usually tell between this century, the 90s, the 80s, the 70s, the 60s...
but not between the decades within this century.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
Sam Segal:

Thanks for celebrating it with me, TDK!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
coelacanth∅:

(...but then, this could pass for 80s!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
Sam Segal:

Well, this is from 1994. But definitely agreed with the point that you were making about the "sound" in the 21st century. This could just as easily be made now by someone who wants to sound like they're from 1994.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
coelacanth∅:

right. -and it's fashionable to use "vintage" keyboards too, which would make it sound aged
  10:35pm
Slowly:

Does "sound" refer more to production qualities rather than to musical substance?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
coelacanth∅:

both, in my mind. certainly production, but if there's a cheesy casio sound it brings it back too, even with the currently popular production methods
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
coelacanth∅:

the 80s drums sound is all production. the 70s drum sound is production, microphones used, drum heads and how they're tuned...
but -i'm speaking with only the esperience of someone who's never worked in a recording studio, and barely ever been in one!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
coelacanth∅:

("esperience"?)
  10:43pm
Slowly:

I'm thinking of, say, Tomita's Mussorgsky. Is it late 19th century? Late 20th century? Or is the issue moot, because there were no recordings at the time of Mussorgsky's work?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
northguineahills:

I have that Tomita (Mussorgsky).

That O'rourke/Gustafsson was amazing. Obviously love both of their work.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
zzz:

hearing chuck johnson immediately puts me in a calmer space
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Sam Segal:

NGH! Glad you're here. My girlfriend asked if Mats Gustafsson's playing on that track was a growling dog, which is something I think he'd take as a compliment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
Sam Segal:

Agreed, zzz. Chuck Johnson's "Balsams" record is a go-to wind-down record for me.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
coelacanth∅:

Slowly i'm not familiar with that record but i think classical music in general is recorded with minimal effects. not even reverb.
i have records from the 40s, on plymouth records (i.e.) that sound remarkably similar to the same piece recorded in the 90s (on musical heritage society, i.e.)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
coelacanth∅:

(though the earlier ones are all mono, and the later ones usually stereo)

rw:

I was just going to look up Sealand, but there’s the convenient link.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
coelacanth∅:

(but then, Tomita would've changed Moussorgsky quite drastically, no?)

hi rw
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
Sam Segal:

Sealand looks like a nice place to visit, but I'm not sure I'd want to live there.
  11:15pm
headcleaner:

Good stuff, Sam. Am headed to a quiet place, not to sleep specifically. But to continue to process ... whatever you might send down to us.

this is really beuatiful. i like trumpet and accordion together
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
Sam Segal:

Thank you for continuing to process, here or elsewhere, headcleaner!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
Sam Segal:

@ZZZ, yeah that Bogdan Raczynski EP is really cool. He is known more for his electronic dance music, so that recording is a bit of a departure from his usual sound.
  11:20pm
rw:

Sealand looks like it's supported by coffee cans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm

That don't have much tax revenue there to support anything more stable.
