I wonder if Standard Oil. like Walter Benjamin, seeks to "brush history against the grain."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm
Rich in Washington:

Greetings, Puzzled Fujians!

Hi chresti!

Hmm . . . Pete Seeger in a record produced by Standard Oil. History does indeed make strange bedfellows.

Hello all, and welcome to the last day of the Sheena’s marathon! We are trotting that final mile, drenched in sweat, reaching out for a cup of water…

Oh it's a strange story all right - check out this history of the Standard School Broadcast from the SF Chronicle in 1976:

Hiya Fab!

Hello, iBread, and puzzle boxers.

Hi Sem!

This has taken a Foucauldian turn re: "truth." Play this in a classroom today and there would be t-r-o-u-b-l-e
Avatar 1:26pm
Mr Fab:

I once bought a huge batch of old records, probably from a school originally, of American history and educational recordings. And boy, was I surprised when I got to the Standard oil ones. Apart from their amazingly progressive attitude, the whole combination of actors and original songs was Quite a production. When I was making what turned out to be a kind of endless sound-collage project called “USA,“ I certainly used a big chunk of the Standard oil records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm
Rich in Washington:

This is the record that my pal Dr. Zomb says is the gold standard of weird sampleable educational records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm
Zipperhead7:

Fab -- did you finish the sound collage? If so, is it posted anywhere?
  1:40pm
Listener Robert:

This has been brilliant, and I was listening only by accident, being stuck in the bathroom when I meant to switch the stream back to Bob Brainen after Jan Turkenburg ended.
Avatar 1:44pm
Mr Fab:

Zipperhead7, it ended up being 10 mixes for a total of 4 hours. It got a good response and some WFMU airplay, but it all fell off line and I’m terrible about keeping my stuff “in print.”
Avatar 1:44pm
Mr Fab:

Robert, did you manage to get out of the bathroom?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm
Rich in Washington:

neat to hear this in its raw form!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm
ironybread:

Hi Robert! We're not listening to the real voice of anybody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm
chresti:

Where is this going?
Avatar 1:55pm
Mr Fab:

Speaking of sound-collage, don’t miss Don-O’s special FOUR hour deep dive into Negativland today, following “Wired Up!” An end-of-Marathon blow-out.
  1:55pm
Listener Robert:

I got out and even dried off. But this record was great, the way it looks at the nature of reality and even at itself.
  1:58pm
Listener Robert:

But now the flusher arm of the toilet has broken AGAIN. I thought metal would be better than the plastic one that broke, but the metal ones corrode and break too. The chain is OK, but just barely long enough.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm
chresti:

Listener Robert, we've been flushing our toilet with buckets full of water since last September.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm
Zipperhead7:

I made a large cat-box-for-humans in the basement. That took care of our plumbing problems for good.
Avatar 2:02pm
Mr Fab:

To paraphrase the bawdy old song:

Oh, dear, what can the matter be
Listener Robert got locked in the lavat'ry
He was there from Sunday 'till Saturday
Nobody knew he was there…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm
ironybread:

Once I had a toilet seat bottom half break and I propped it up with rocks instead of buying a new one because I was so skint
Avatar 2:09pm
Otis:

Made it just in time for coconuts and rockets.

Yes, Coconut Monkeyrocket! Thanks to Sheena’s own Otis Fodder for introducing me to them via his Comfort Stand ‘net label.

A good eon ago. Hey, those Standard Oil Records, my fav being America at Mid-Century with the sound collage, atomic to space age.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm

An almost unbelievable coincidence that this should show up on the playlist at the exact moment one of its co-creators appears in chat

It’s been doing that at the start of other shows, too. After a show has been on for a few minutes, it snaps back.
