As some of you already know... this is going to be an ALL SHEENA DJ Hour of Sound Collage!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm
postconsumer:

I had planned to aggressively promote the DJ Premium, "Sheena the Album," as part of my pledge pitching this hour, and then a very, very good thing happened: WFMU hit its fundraising goal! So, I turned the playlist into a celebration of the DJs here who worked so hard to make that happen. Congrats, everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm
postconsumer:

We'll be hearing from The Bran Flakes, Escape Mechanism, Taylor Jessen, Rich Linsday, Austin Rich, Mr. Fab, Jan Turkenburg, Ursula 1000 and Venomous Invisible Amanda... If I missed any Sheena's Jungle Room DJs who work with samples, please let me know and I'll look forward to learning more.

Putting this mix together, it was amazing to hear how much talent we've got going on around here... so pleased to be a part of the gang.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:15pm
Austin Rich:

Yeah. I regularly blush when I consider who I'm up against. We've got some great DJs. I just sort of hold my own, as best I can, and try not to embarrass myself too badly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm
postconsumer:

You're speaking for me, too, there, Austin!
Avatar 👻 8:16pm
Mr Fab:

what are you all doing in my wazoo?!

But seriously, folks! when i suggested the idea for this Premium, I didn't know if there would be too many submissions. But got so, so many, that this could have been a multi-disk set.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:17pm
Austin Rich:

I'm sitting on a really good interview with Taylor, from before I was on Sheena's, about some of the other stuff he's done. It's a great interview. I might air it someday.

Hi Jon, I never worked at Music Box, but I worked at Metro/Smart Bar a few blocks away from 88-93
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:25pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm
postconsumer:

I miss Chicago. Lived in Roscoe Village while attending Columbia College
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm
Kat in Chicago:

The neighborhood of the Music Box changed soooo much after Cubs got lights in Wrigley Field and started winning games now and then. It used to be kinda sleepy in a nice way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm
postconsumer:

Austin, I've got a couple more of yours on the way... and what's with all these un-aired interviews?!
Avatar 👻 8:29pm
MarkTime:

I'm trying to remember ever going to the Music Box ... I lived down by the 3 Penny and Biograph in the 70s, and my dad worked at the latter. I did ride the CTA route 46 up Southport enough until that got cancelled
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm
Kat in Chicago:

Never lived in Roscoe Village but I go there now and then. I'm in Irving Park/Albany Park right now
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:32pm
Austin Rich:

These interviews were on my podcast, which sort of didn't get heard very broadly, and then sort of disappeared. So I should do something with all that stuff. I was interviewing people about once a week for a while, all sorts of folks that I was just curious about. There's always more stuff to do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm
Kat in Chicago:

I used to go to the 3 Penny, it's been a concert venue called Lincoln Hall for a while now. Wax Trax! and Lounge Ax were up the street from there, back in the day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm
Kat in Chicago:

So many Chicago neighborhoods that used to have so much more character. That's one of 'em.

Roscoe Village had change a LOT the last time I was there. It was practically unrecognizable. :(

I'm vaguely aware of some of these names, as my wife is from Chicago, and we've visited a few times. she lived in the Belmont/California area and used to see shows at Lounge Ax.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm
Kat in Chicago:

Yeah it used to be a lot funkier too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm
Kat in Chicago:

I just moved from the Belmont/California area, Fab!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm

Prior to 94?
Avatar 👻 8:36pm

that featured Dick Hyman ("The Moog and Me"), and some Tom Tom Club "Wordy Rappinghood"
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:36pm
Austin Rich:

I'm with you, as a west-coast oriented person. Can't tell you much about Chi-town, except that I visited once and had an AMAZING time. But I could tell you a lot about the Northwest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm

Used to hang out in the Clark/Belmont area, in high school, ~1991.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm

What was the club called... just around the corner from The Alley? Got dragged in there once of twice and loved it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm
Kat in Chicago:

Yeah prior to '94 there were more fun shops and restaurants in Roscoe Village, and a cheap haircut place called "Big Hair". I get my hair cut now at a place called Twisted Scissors run by the same people
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm
postconsumer:

Thanks for the background, Mr. Fab! I added that one, when cutting all my pledge breaks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm

Shirley and spinoza radio played/plays RIAA, that's where I've heard it (and Bran Flakes), before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm
Kat in Chicago:

Jon: Medusa's? That place is long gone, but legendary. The Clark/Belmont Punkin' Donuts is now a Target. Inexplicably, the L&L Tavern across the street has survived.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm

Nice recent article on the man behind Medusa's chicagoreader.com...

Correction: I think Medusa's may still be open in some shape or form
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm
postconsumer:

Wish I could post photos in the chat... I'd look around and see if I could find any pics from back then. Got asked to leave Punkin Donuts once, smoking clove cigarettes. ha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm
Kat in Chicago:

Oh, Berlin! They are thriving. They were tiny when I used to go there, but expanded later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm

Yes, it was fairly small, and everything was painted white.

Ha! This contains samples from a DJ in Portland, Ricardo Wang! His show is called, "What's This Called?" and I made this for him, live, for his show, and played it for him over the phone one day for his show. This was what I recorded off the mixer when I called his show.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:45pm

(All samples from his show, that I captured while listening. I believe he's on Freeform Portland, now.)
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:46pm
Austin Rich:

I did this when he was on at KPSU. He used to be on in Olympia, too. He's been around... since 1985, I think?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:48pm
Austin Rich:

I used to engineer the bands for his show, when he would have live music. The backing music was me layering recordings of live music I engineered on his show, too. (Slowed down, with FX, etc.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm
postconsumer:

chresti and Aitch, welcome! Sorry, I didn't mean to ignore you above. got distracted by memory lane... :)
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:49pm
Austin Rich:

Ricardo Wang used to organize the Olympia Experimental Music Festival, for almost 20 years. I think he's now only adjacently connected to that event, but I think he might have even had something to do with starting it? Ricardo has been around for a while.
