@RevRabbit The WWII gap owes to a recording ban from August '42 to November '44 because of a musicians strike. It started over royalties from jukebox play, as jukeboxes were edging live bands out of lots of smaller venues. en.m.wikipedia.org...

@Rev Rabbit, nah, it was all because Petrillo had cajones! Another WWII rationing misconception was that there was a gas shortage...but nope, we were the world's biggest exporters! We didn't have rubber, however, so rationing plus a national 30 MPH speed limit were instituted to save our tires.

Heading out in a few minutes to walk into Manhattan and to the subway so I can get some goat ricotta cheese and greens from the Union Square greenmarket to make a slow-cook lasagna tonight.

PigeonsAndRust:

@ Rev Rabbit While there was a shellac shortage, as lac beetles are from Asia, I still find lots and lots more WWII records in the wild than late 20s/ early 30s stuff. And it is true that the pressing quality is worse, due to the recycled shellac used. Another reason for the shortage of earlier records was that they had a slight recycling value during the war.

Fun fact: when radio hit it big after '26 there was serious doubt the record industry would survive at all! Record sales were off hugely even before the Depression hit, and they didn't regain their 1926 peak until Ithink 1938!

@Hughie: that’s spot-on about “Lamb’s” departure from the English countryside-y nursery rhymes and folk tales vibe that dominates the other pre-sellout Genesis albums. But even on “Lamb”, that urban setting is quickly left behind for an almost D&D-like series of traps and cages the hero has to pass through….

John cleared his throat, cocked his head, squinted at her and took his best shot. “Uh, pardon me, ma’am, but do you know about Jesus?” She glared at him like something slimy just crawled across her foot. “I’m talkin’ about ‘Jesus, the Missing Years’” he said, and launched into his hilarious spoken word opus by the same name while she watched him, curiously as she sipped her drink, becoming more enthralled by the moment. By the time Jesus met his Irish bride and rented a flat on the Lower East Side, as the story goes, she was hooked.' pleasekillme.com...

Hayes Carll - She Left Me For Jesus

She left me for Jesus
And that just ain't fair
She says, that he's perfect.
How could I compare
She says, I should find him
And I'll know peace at last
But if I ever find Jesus
I'm kickin' his ass

Love the set Joe, have you watched or listened to Jesus Christ Superstar lately? Would've been nice to have Ian Gillian in the movie.
