Have you read, by chance, George Martin's books in the series starting with "A Song of Ice and Fire"? He's got a pirate nation with a religion whose priests discovered artificial respiration and use it in a religious ritual, completely drowning young men and bringing them back—or, likely more accurately, bringing-back the ones they want to have around.

It's Theon Greyjoy's people—I think in the show they included it after he comes back to his people from being an hostage with the Starks.

He's a fundamentalist Mormon, against the ban on plural marriage (in this life, I think the mainline L.D.S. still believe in it in the Celestial Kingdom) and the removal of the most racist Mormonisms.
