	9:43pm slugluv1313: hiya NGH! i hope you are well! speaking of inner Goth-dom -- when did the term "Goth" come about? i mean, i was dressing all in black by the time i was 11 or 12 (well trying to, given that i was living with parents -- but they may not have minded? was not like red, which my Mom would bitch about having to wash separately) -- & black nail polish soon as i could get my hands on it, silver jewelry, etc. . . but this was 1970, 1971 -- so was more of an obsession with all things Occult, old black & white horror movies, Dark Shadows, etc. 🕸️💀🦇🖤

I always assumed the term Goth came to describe the music, as Gothic architecture, its large and grandiose forms, which didn't allow for much natural light. also created dimly lit spaces, and encroaching shadows, This is all compared to later architectural styles, so, later, anything dark, mysterious, and maybe sinister was labelled "Gothic". Also, when this was used as such an adjective, most standing Gothic architecture was in in ruins, making an even ghostlier visage.

To differentiate the subculture from New Romantics, etc. But that is probably more because that's when I first started to hear the term, totally unaware of its prior history.

I always assumed the term Goth came to describe the music, as Gothic architecture, its large and grandiose forms, which didn't allow for much natural light. also created dimly lit spaces, and encroaching shadows, This is all compared to later architectural styles, so, later, anything dark, mysterious, and maybe sinister was labelled "Gothic". Also, when this was used as such an adjective, most standing Gothic architecture was in in ruins, making an even ghostlier visage.

To differentiate the subculture from New Romantics, etc. But that is probably more because that's when I first started to hear the term, totally unaware of its prior history.
