Avatar 🛎 Swag For Life Member 12:40pm
Phillippe:

Not sure if I shared this before. Last time I served it was for an injury claim. Dude got rear-ended at a light and saw it coming, so he braced himself and wound up tearing his rotator cuff from gripping the steering wheel so tight. Defendant did not dispute responsibility, just was being tight with the pain and suffering amount. Jury selection was long and tedious, longer than the actual trial. Defense attorney asked an exhaustive list of questions, probing for relationships with medical personnel, family members in the legal profession, experience with insurance companies. The one question she did NOT ask was if anyone had had rotator cuff surgery, which was the case for two members of the selected jury. Deliberations were over in 30 minutes, including selecting a foreman, deciding guilt, how much to award and ordering coffee

Indeed they were Hubig. Bar wigs, as they are known. (Which is going to be the name of my new 60s revivalist heavy beat group, The Bar Wigs.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm
Stanley:

Reminds me of when Fat Freddy was called for jury duty, for which there was a $100 daily allowance, so he dresses up straight; suit, tie, hair combed etc, Accused turns out to be a poor hippie (who is obviously innocent) and his liberal lawyer throws Fat Freddy off the jury for being too straight!

I've only been to the courthouse once so far during my term. Defendant was representing himself on an assault charge. He was wearing a set of silver spurs ! and the only question he asked prospective jurors was if they sported any tattoos. It's a strange world out there.

@chresti it was more like there wasn't anything to debate. We asked the two people who had the rotator cuff surgery what they thought was a good amount, they were both close in their opinions, so we met the amount in the middle and then started looking for the Splenda.

Mary, yeah, this was a number of years ago, but I think one of the folks was less than a month out from wearing a sling
