	9:30am still b/p: Funny how the sponsorship references in vintage broadcasts seem somehow more benign or add more hue of interesting character, than any similar thing heard currently or in more recent decades, when fast disdain, full aversion and harsh impatience can be triggered.
	9:36am Doug Schulkind: Stream pappy adamdoesit is here. Hey, pappy! And lookie there, it's chresti! I enjoy hearing the between-song chatter, including adverts and such, on those old radio cuts. In an anthropological sort of way.
	9:37am Listener Gregory: I have the insightful comment that when the chatter is good, it adds to the show, but when it is boring or lame, it really sucks the air out of the performance. So when in doubt, perhaps remain silent.

	9:38am bigplanetnoise: I’ve always loved the dichotomy of the simple, cornpone jokes, followed by mindblowing instrument mastery.
	9:41am Listener Gregory: I was at a show once where the performer told us he had to talk to us to warm up before he could really get the juice to play. I found that annoying. Also, he had nothing particular to say.

	9:43am Doug Schulkind: So much of the vital music from the early days of radio was made possible entirely through the commercial sponsorship of the programs. Often the artists themselves incorporated the name of the products (or references to the products) into their band names. The Lightcrust Doughbous, the Nugrape Twins, etc. @bigplanetnoise That is a wonderful juxtaposition. It reads, I think, as understated humility. Tempering the genius for the downhome audience tuning in from their hardscrabble existences.

	9:46am still b/p: In live shows, I don't like when performers want to toss out very general and brief social/political commentary bait, like loose easy invitations for audience to vocalize easy approval. I'd like to think someone such as Patti Smith for example, doesn't need to do that, but she does it. "And, yah, the corporations..." Particular old sponsor bits can feel a little odd or nutty in hindsight (hindhearing?). Mike Wallace, of course, pitched products including smokes back in the day, and a local oldies station plays a cut of him doing some cheerfully earnest praising and persuading for Fluffo shortening. It's oddly smirkily entertaining.

	9:50am Webhamster Henry: I listen to the archives of the CBS Radio Mystery Theatre which ran from 1972-82 and the airchecks include news, ads and PSAs which, although having nothing to do with the scripts at all, set the feel of those bygone days. Some scripts do reference "Women's lib" though. cbsrmt.com

	9:54am Doug Schulkind: @Webhamster Henry I was a devoted fan of the CBS Radio Mystery Theatre. Hosted by Eli Wallach! I listened under the covers on my transistor radio. It came on at 11pm or midnight on WTOP, the all-news station in Washington, DC.

	9:57am Doug Schulkind: If I remember correctly, the CBS Radio Mystery Theatre was replaced by Larry King's coast-to-coast radio show. What fantastic radio that was. I listened every night almost all night. He would have a guest on for the first hour or sometimes two, then go to open phones until 5am. Amazing to hear voices of callers from all over the country. I was besotted. Welcome, dear sinner!

Don't know why wha' happen. But a Fluffo nutter would be like some kinda dubious old-school remedy or emetic. I was clowning once with the Great Shakes shaker, holding between my boy knees for twisty-shaky action. You WILL believe what happened next. I can still see it all ovadaplace.

	10:55am still b/p: I made a 6 ft. section of free-standing porch railing last week that someone needed for a simple stage set. I'm not accomplished or sure-handed, I'm slow. But it turned out miraculously squared up and decent looking. And thennnnnn...it was decided to cut it from the production. That's the way the baluster bounces/gets bounced.

	11:08am Doug Schulkind: I lied. Sonny Simmons is actually playing an English horn here, not an alto sax. Like the oboe, the English horn is notoriously difficult to keep in tune. Making this improvisation all the more remarkable.

So, those amazing AI language systems we read about are not quite as efficient as the human brain, which runs on a few Wheaties and bottles of beer. For Google, it's a matter of "we can pay the bill, so all that energy use is ok."

	9:43am Doug Schulkind: So much of the vital music from the early days of radio was made possible entirely through the commercial sponsorship of the programs. Often the artists themselves incorporated the name of the products (or references to the products) into their band names. The Lightcrust Doughbous, the Nugrape Twins, etc. @bigplanetnoise That is a wonderful juxtaposition. It reads, I think, as understated humility. Tempering the genius for the downhome audience tuning in from their hardscrabble existences.

I'd like to think someone such as Patti Smith for example, doesn't need to do that, but she does it. "And, yah, the corporations..." Particular old sponsor bits can feel a little odd or nutty in hindsight (hindhearing?). Mike Wallace, of course, pitched products including smokes back in the day, and a local oldies station plays a cut of him doing some cheerfully earnest praising and persuading for Fluffo shortening. It's oddly smirkily entertaining.

So, those amazing AI language systems we read about are not quite as efficient as the human brain, which runs on a few Wheaties and bottles of beer. For Google, it's a matter of "we can pay the bill, so all that energy use is ok."
