Sun. Dec 22nd, 3pm - 5pm:
The Unsolicited Return of the Winter Soul-stice (fill-in for Paul Bruno)
(More info...)
You can't stop the seasons from turning, and you evidently also can't stop an old dog from performing his one old trick. Answering the teeming clamor of one New York Times food columnist
, Gaylord Fields is returning to WFMU's airwaves for a one-off Winter Soul-stice program. In his time away he's learned nothing, so the format will remain the same: two hours of original 1960s soul 45s, and the abuse of an expensive reverb machine for the sake of corny vocal effects.
Hi everyone! I hadn't known about Lenny Welch so thank you Gaylord. I looked him up and learned some fun facts:
-he was born in Long Branch NJ which is at the jersey shore.
- went to the college of new rochelle which was probably around the same time my mother was attending
-he was known as a "MOR" artist. never heard of that.
stands for "Middle Of the Road" but means "strongly melodic and techniques of vocal harmony, and light orchestral arrangements. The format was eventually rebranded as soft adult contemporary."
I have limited knowledge of Saint Etienne, was most of their stuff really chilled out? For some reason, i thought they were more dancey, but heard 3 tracks recently from them…all were mellow and all good
Oh, Noooozzzman! I may have been fishing a bit, but it seems I caught a whopper! Thanks!

oh hell, play Ride the Wild Surf anyway (this track is great though, never heard it before, Jan & Dean are so underrated, I really need to watch the T.A.M.I. show again and I’ll stop now)
Allez le Verts! Sorry, delayed response related to the football/soccer team from the city of St Etienne and nothing to do with music. Loving the show so far!
Welcome, KC! I didn't get your email, but I'll check for it again. It pleased me to make your acquaintance! Keep doing the Frankenstein Walk till we meet again!
I love that Soft Machine track, but I really don't know what to make of the way that the percussion and sax sound so out of tempo with regards to one another
can anyone help me ID a song? sounds like mamas & papas or the association, kind of like the mary tyler moore theme song, but the theme of the lyrics is going your own way/doing your own thing. I think it's a breakup song if i recall, but the melody is more upbeat and powerful. thanks if anyone has any tips!
Hey Gaylord & Everyone!
Sorry Im running late, but Booker T & The MG's is not a bad place to start. Happy Sunday & yes to May Day! & Eid Mubarak for any of our Muslim friends!
The Stax Four covering an entire LP by the Fab Four is one of those things that shouldn’t exist but it’s awesome that it does (the LP cover—both sides—is fantastic too)
@Ken from Hyde Park I was still there at that point! I was one of the few left dancing. Wonder who you were! @Gaylord, the Frankenstein Walk continues till then! haha
michelle phillips wrote that because she couldn't stop sniffing around other guy's loins.

Thanks for The Action. They never fail to put a smile on my face.

The Action are Phil Collins' favorite group. He once flew straight from a Genesis concert in Europe to sit in with the band at the 100 Club in London. He said it was a dream come true.
This is TheAction ?! ...What is happening to the Mods this year...
7:31pm
Joe R.:
@gaylord absolutely right! although I’m going to go out on a limb and say that Billy Preston playing on a few tracks might have been a bridge to Booker T
@lawrence: I can't say I blame him. The Action are one of my all-time favorite flop groups. They never smelled a single hit in their lifetime -- but at least guitarist Alan "Bam" King got to have a smash hit with Ace's "How Long"!

Joe R.:
@revolutionrabbit definitely have to look up that story but justified in any case
@RevRabbit and @StringOFperils that song is sooo close but the song I'm thinking of is a different melody and a bit more orchestral. thank you you two, it is the exact description I gave.
@Gaylord - yes, they were an incredible band. They could all sing, too! Beach Boys-level harmonies. Check out this wonderful snippet of them covering the Ronettes' "You Baby": https://youtu.be/F5lUQrUM-Hk?t=248
@StringOFperils @Revolution Rabbit Nov63 it's good to know I'm not the only one who gets hung up on an earworm melody. even WFMU encourages we clicky-star but sometimes that gets lost in the sauce
musical ear worms
According to "Wait Wait ..."of NPR - (yesterday)
chewing gum can get rid of an unwanted musical ear worm ???
the way water gets rid of hiccups???
no idea ??

You are way too modest, Gaylord — seriously. I’ve discovered so much music via your show — stuff that never would have hit my radar otherwise. Thank you.
