A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

Hi folks -- this is putting me in the mindframe of Ant Farm's "Media Burn" piece, where they drive a modified cadillac they call a "phantom dream car" into a wall of flaming TVs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Mr Fab:

this kind of anti-tv rhetoric always divided everyone into poles: you were either the brain-washed masses, or smart people who proudly declared that they never watched tv, gave their tv away. etc. But plenty could watch TV critically and ironically. that is: listening actively, not just passively.
Avatar 🎸 8:54pm abbazabba:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm Mr Fab:

ultradamno: good point. One could argue that Tv and film have flipped in terms of respectability. TV gives us solid stuff like "Mad Men," "Breaking Bad," etc, while the cinemas are filled with superheroes and kid's films - films for children, or the childish, har har.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm MHLee:

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:02pm Zipperhead7:

McLuhan has had an interesting trajectory. His first book, "The Mechanical Bride," was a critical work influenced by the Frankfurt School. Then he switched to. positive view of media, and was embraced by communication scholars, who traditionally felt pretty marginal. No, he said, they were doing the most important work of all! Then he fell out of favor but he's sexy again because of the Internet. Basically, he would have been a hell of an ad man -- his scholarship was suspect, but he was brilliant at aphorisms.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:34pm ultradamno:

Where is Bill Grundy now?

Oh, dead. Just like Tom Snyder, who also had a hostile TV show encounter with Rotten
Avatar 9:34pm Don-O:

Fooocka!

....oh, and they go out on a moog cover of Windy,
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:35pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Rich & lungers
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:35pm ultradamno:

I really think the headline of that show always should have been how creepy Grundy was trying to talk up Siouxsie
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm chresti:

What's My Line
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:35pm Scott67:

Wasn't it Steve Jones doin all the filth then?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:36pm ultradamno:

Or Paul Cook, I'm sure there's a way to tell them apart...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Mr Fab:

Ah, the Bill Grundy Interview, where our own Mike Rogers got the name of his band The Rotters.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Krys O.:

@ultradamno: Tom Snyder and Lydon had an amicable reunion in the early 90s. Quite touching, really.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:38pm ultradamno:

Didn't he call him Snydie? That was priceless. I think Dick Clark hated him for PiL's Bandstand stunt too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm Mr Fab:

Yeah, that was Jonesy slagging off the dirty rotter. And now he hosts a show on KLOS, what used to be the mainstream rock station of LA, the kind of station that never would have played the Pistols in a million years.
Avatar 9:39pm ironybread:

Once in North Hollywood while biking some idiot yelled at me "What are you, Mormon?" I yelled back "Can Mormons say Motherfucker?" He said "Um," and I went on my way
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:39pm Krys O.:

The Bandstand incident was actually PiL encouraging the audience to come on the stage. It was fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm Rich in Washington:

HA!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:39pm ultradamno:

That brief period where a couple of major labels got the idea the way to market "new wave" was 10" eps. Epic's were Nu Disks
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:39pm Scott67:

Mick played me a song in TRASH CULT last night. It's a home recorded song by a local. We agreed it must go in our Show, it is rather blasphemous! But piss funny to us!
🍻😎🤙
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm chresti:

I used to love watching the Tomorrow show high
  9:40pm Dean:

Better be some ATV.
  9:40pm Dean:

Or else...there won't be any ATV.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm Mr Fab:

Scott, blasphemy is fun!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:40pm ultradamno:

Well, Dick Clark had a rant about some unnamed band's backstage antics that I always assumed was about them...not many loose cannons got on that show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm Mr Fab:

Did Alternative TV ever perform with Television?
Avatar 9:41pm Don-O:

Sounds like White Punks On Dope
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:41pm Scott67:

So is masturbation! they go hand in hand in this song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm Mr Fab:

Don-O: pretty sure it's the same music, but assuming the lyrics are different?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:42pm ultradamno:

Seems like a natural bill, with Television Personalities on there too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm chresti:

You're right Don-O
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Kat in Chicago:

It says White Punks On Dope in parentheses on the cover
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Krys O.:

In my 20s I watched a lot of late night televangelists like Herbert W. Armstrong, Dr. Gene Scott, van Impe.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Kat in Chicago:

But yeah I think the words are prob different
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Mr Fab:

ironybread: were you wearing a white dress shirt whilst cycling?

Or just cranking up the Osmonds?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Kat in Chicago:

Krys: yeah, I had a roommate in my early 20s that got me into televangelism and wrestling
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:44pm ultradamno:

Crass' White Punks On Hope sounds nothing like it though...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:44pm Krys O.:

One of my sisters married a Mormon, but that's another story.
Avatar 9:45pm ironybread:

Fab - I was merely riding my bike, which to the very very stupid is the same thing as being Mormon
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:45pm ultradamno:

My aunt was a Witness...that's a whole bag of worms.
  9:45pm Dean:

I roomed with a Jehovah's Witness. In fact, he was and is a very, very cool guy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm Mr Fab:

televangelism and wrestling? Pretty much describes LA's old UHF channel 56. Throw in roller derby and "Speed Racer."
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:46pm Krys O.:

Yeah, my dad's youngest sister married a JW and cut off all communication with the family.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:46pm spodiodi:

kid in my neighborhood's family were too. felt bad for that kid. he wasn't allowed to do anything
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:46pm Kat in Chicago:

Chicago had some good UHF stuff in the 80s
Avatar 9:46pm Don-O:

I get the feeling that I'll be replaying this over the weekend....that and the Mothers show. You're killing it, Rich!!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:46pm Krys O.:

This infinitely improves this song.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:46pm ultradamno:

Were you wearing a white button down shirt? Because that with bike is the mormon uniform
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:47pm Scott67:

That'll be me tonight! But with no friends, unless I'm in FMU Chat too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm Rich in Washington:

Thanks, Don-O!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm Mr Fab:

ultradamno: haha, I asked him that, too. No, he wasn't.
Avatar 9:47pm ironybread:

Be sure and tune in to my show tomorrow, "A History of White Men on Bicycles", where our special guest will be Alfred Jarry
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm Rich in Washington:

Aw, Scott!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:48pm Krys O.:

Yup, that's part of the Mission year when Mormon boys go out to proselytize.
Avatar 9:48pm Don-O:

I wonder if channel 56 is on YouTube.....
Avatar 9:48pm Don-O:

The speed makes all the sense in the world!!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:49pm ultradamno:

Be careful asking for a light from that guy, he's been known to reach for the firearms over such request.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:49pm Krys O.:

As Mick Jagger said, "We'd like to say "God Bless". So, if you're out tonight,
Don't forget, if you're on your bike, wear white...amen."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm Franco Twinkie:

Irony, will there be a segment on Albert Hoffman?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:51pm ultradamno:

Slow downed Dez is great singer
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:51pm ultradamno:

...oh, I guess that's Hank on that single.

Black Flag singers are hard to keep track of...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm Rich in Washington:

Hi Franco!
  9:52pm Dean:

I sense that we have trouble with difficult or putatively extreme ideologies, ones that are at first glance contrary to our own. I don't buy it. My JW buddy is massively talented and reasonably critical of his upbringing.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:53pm Aitch:

songs we learned from that gateway drug Let Them Eat Jellybeans comp
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:57pm ultradamno:

Did Black Flag ever do a medley version of TV Party and Six Pack live? It would be very easy to slip from one into the other
Avatar 10:01pm Don-O:

Of COURSE this track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm Rich in Washington:

I hadn't actually planned to play this but that Grotus track reminded me of it.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:05pm ultradamno:

Didn't The Mentors have a song about that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm Rich in Washington:

this song's so out of date. The nazis next door are no longer hidden.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:05pm Kat in Chicago:

I was thinking the same thing, Rich
Avatar 10:06pm Don-O:

If there's a 'Nazis In Arizona', I'd believe it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm Franco Twinkie:

Dean, I know you're familiar with Eye Witness News on Channel seven. This afternoon I went to my moms house under the impression I was going there to water the plants. You know what I did instead? fell asleep on the couch while Dallas Rains did the weather. They don't talk about the conflict between Russia and The Ukraine. Instead they do segments on the rising problem of street racing in the San Fernando Valley, which is fine, no one I encounter on my daily route talks about the war. I look at the BBC and France 24 now and then if I want to see carnage of the most horrific sort. I never watch TV at home, but I'm entitled to fall asleep without having nightmares, I think. TV is poison for the most part, but so is Pepsi. Just one Pepsi, all is I want is one Pepsi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm Rich in Washington:

and now the TV news would act like their view should be examined neutrally
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:07pm ultradamno:

I don't know if qualifies as a TV song but Tuxedomoon's "so we joked about the TV set, calling it the eye from hell" just popped in my head
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm Rich in Washington:

What's that from, ultra?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:08pm ultradamno:

Desire
  10:08pm Dean:

There's a war? Who proclaimed it? Who against whom?

There is no war de jure, there is one de facto. Ain't that lovely?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm Franco Twinkie:

THIS!!!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:10pm ultradamno:

I think Putin is set to declare it, if he hasn't already
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:11pm spodiodi:

Moistly, Dean
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:11pm ultradamno:

(at least that's been widely rumored to be about to happen)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm Mr Fab:

Austin Rich did a show of songs about tv, pretty much punk. As I said then, It’s weird, there were almost no songs about TV before punk. Future archaeologists judging our culture by our music would have no idea what an impact TV had. Until they get to the punk era.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:13pm Kat in Chicago:

I'm the Slime is an earlier TV song I can think of
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:13pm ultradamno:

And now the TV is a quaint anachronism, if you can't carry it around and nearly get hit by a car crossing the street watching it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm Rich in Washington:

There's a Stan Freberg song and a bit by Ken Nordine. I'm just doing this on the fly. Not really trying to be comprehensive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm Franco Twinkie:

You beat me Kat!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:14pm Scott67:

Keep waiting for Skyhooks, Horror Movie.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:14pm Kat in Chicago:

wasn't an INSTANT REQUEST haha, I was just trying to think of pre-punk songs about TV
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:15pm Krys O.:

I remember that one, Scott.
  10:15pm Dean:

I'm as moist as the next guy, but 1) there is no war at present, 2) Trump of all POTUS managed not to escalate this sort of shit, 3) we can spend our spring and summer weekends pondering Putin's intentions forever, and 4) I really miss the pandemic (no traffic) and Trump's administration (don't fuck with Russia). Why is this so hard for folks to process?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:15pm ultradamno:

Radiators From Space had a great one "Television Screen"
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:15pm Kat in Chicago:

this is an awfully good theme show, I would have thought you prepped a lot for it Rich
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:16pm ultradamno:

...and The Cortinas had "Television Families"...is it possible there's not a Rezillos one?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm Franco Twinkie:

Call it a war or call it a trip to the laundromat, I think we all know what we're looking at.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:17pm Scott67:

Krys, particularly relevant regarding current News!
  10:19pm Dean:

So discouraging, Franco.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm Franco Twinkie:

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:55pm Scott67:

What's Woods done wrong?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm Rich in Washington:
