Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

I missed Cooper-Moore this week, because dance comes first. I regret my choice. The show was good, but terrifying. I was asked to come onstage, was the only one to refuse. It came out as hateful when I was petrified. Yeah I'm evil

Hi Dave and Claire

This was recorded by the classic Trane quartet, but only released posthumously, guess they didn't think it was up to snuff at the time...

If you is evil fred then the world is a beautiful place!

@Dave: I publicly rejected people who are commonly rejected. That's evil. What made me do it isn't relevant, I should have known better
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm
Dave Sewelson:

If you knew better you would do better...give yourself a little hug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm

This Transition, in vinyl, in good condition, looks like it sells for more than $100...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm
doctorjazz:

@Fred, people are often the worst judges of how they are coming off to other people, often we project our feelings onto them (that's something meditation works on). I'm guessing people there, including the performers, just took it as being anxious, stage fright, shyness, not a personal affront.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm
Dave Sewelson:

I judge people who judge people
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:31pm
fred:

@Dave: hug is part of the issue
@doctorjazz: Part of the show's point was having non-typical people on stage and challenging others to accept them. So my block was harmful.
  2:44pm
DavidJ:

This was one of my early faves too. My older brother, an aspiring drummer, had the album.

I've always wondered about Rollins, and his sabbatical. He's supposed to have been unhappy with his playing and/or concept. I hear a difference in his tone afterwards, another, leaner, but hard for this non-musician to hear the musical changes. We're there some obvious to musicians?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:20pm

@doc: You meant Sonny... for a while I was thinking Henry, but at some point it didn't match

Plug for the Two Sisters albums, and People Like Us, great stuff! Got to see Joel Forrester again last summer, he had a daily solo gig for a week in a park in NYC (seen The Micros more times than I can count).

I didn't, ahem, 'Getz' this Getz album when I first got it, took quite a few listens...

this record is awesome, jim. check it out! stan went and improvised over an orchestra
  3:31pm
Jim Ryan:

I'll absolutely DO IT! Thanks for the music you are playing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm
doctorjazz:

If I remember correctly, the concept on the Getz was that the string Orchestra parts were written as a skeletal framework, no melodic content, for Getz to flesh out.
  3:33pm
claire:

that's how i understood it, doc

I took Miles Ahead out from the library my 1st year of college, couldn't make any sense of it. In my 4th year I took a jazz history class given by Chuck Israel's, everything clicked.

doc, I've got a pain in my jaw that just won't quit, and it seems like the world is going to s**t, but you know me, I can't complain. Seriously, tho, I didn't getz "Focus," either, but somehow copies kept finding me. A mess or a message?
  4:43pm
claire:

the fringe does that to people. i've seen guys in business suits screaming when they play, and i'm sure they're not jazz guys.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm
Gina Bacon:

I always tell this story, but when I was in high school, a bunch of us went to see Sun Ra in the Village...when they started coming through the crowd, one of the girls with us beat it out of there, and waited on the sidewalk until it was over. Freaked completely out.
  4:48pm
claire:

gina - LOL.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm

Hey Find!
Those Sun Ra shows were a trip! They played in jazz venues, punk rock venues, fit in everywhere (or didn't fit in equally successfully)

Hi, doctorjazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm
adamdoesit:

Gina and doc, a neighbor recently saw me wearing a Sun Ra Arkestra t-shirt, and told me about how she once saw him play a very straight, very white event. "I had just one glass of white wine," she said, but when the band came through the crowd, she became suddenly and violently ill, and left feeling terribly embarrassed. To this day, she wonders what the hell she ate/drank… but the thought that crossed my mind was something like "strong medicine…casting out demons."
