	9:04pm Mr. X: My brother had a dubbing deck. I always had to borrow his cassette deck to make tapes.
	🎸 ♥ 9:07pm Austin Rich: My mom had a nice stereo, and a huge record collection. So I just bought tapes and recorded the radio and her records. Tapes were my gateway to music for most of my life.
	9:08pm Mr. X: My walkman got stolen from my band's house while we were downstairs in the basement practicing. But it was obvious who was upstairs at the time, so we went to his house, and his girlfriend made him give it back to me.
	9:08pm Mr. X: I couldn't really get people to trade for my mixtapes. So I just left them places.
	🎸 ♥ 9:09pm Austin Rich: I burned through so many walkmen. Lost them, broke them, wore them out, had them stolen from me. But I was never without one, pretty much from 1993 on.
	🎸 ♥ 9:09pm Krys O.: My ex, R. Stevie Moore sold tapes by the score. We amassed tons of cassettes. I still have a bunch. I had hundreds of cassettes stolen off me, sadly. I can't dwell too long on what I've lost or had taken away. I'd go bonkers.

	🎸 ♥ 9:22pm Austin Rich: I wanted a Mac early on, for layout / zine reasons. I was on the newspaper staff in school, and the teacher used a Mac to do all the design / layout. I immediately understood what that meant for zine making, and wanted one.

	🎸 ♥ 9:51pm Austin Rich: Historic Problemist shows were often solo, but when possible, William would recruit a band. (Usually drums and a bass player.) Chris Rankin and David I think were the most common players, but I think they went through a lot of drummers. However, all reports suggest that the later phase of The Problemist, when it was William solo in the later part of the '80's, where the most incredible, and the most wild. That's the era I would have loved to see.
	🎸 ♥ 9:52pm Austin Rich: Still, it was a lot of fun to see this performance. Which was to me, and several people all there for dinner, and not for the music.

	9:53pm Mr. X: The Space had good food. They may have had small audiences, but they were very appreciative.
	🎸 ♥ 9:54pm Austin Rich: The Space has sort of evolved, and combined with The Capital Theater, to create The Infinity Room, which now hosts music and comedy here in town. So we lost two businesses and gained a new one.
	🎸 ♥ 9:55pm Austin Rich: (And as I understand it: the food at The Infinity Room is a little better than it was at The Space, so they have that going for them.)

But The Mid-Valley is small, so I assume I can trust the gossip network would have gotten back to me by now if there was something to gossip about. So far, all I hear is good things about the food.

	🎸 ♥ 10:14pm Austin Rich: I did work with William for quite a while, both at Autism House and just personally. (We recorded a TON of music in that practice space.) But gas prices, and then the pandemic, sort of put an end to that.
	🎸 ♥ 10:15pm Austin Rich: William and I were going to try and play some festivals, and go on a Problemist tour. But, again: Pandemic.
	🎸 ♥ 10:18pm Austin Rich: I'm not sure where Nate is from, per se. But I'm guessing either Eugene / Springfield.
	🎸 ♥ 10:20pm Austin Rich: I'm pretty sure Cathead had a song with a riff that went exactly like this. But we never recorded it. And they play it better.

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

	🎸 ♥ 9:51pm Austin Rich: Historic Problemist shows were often solo, but when possible, William would recruit a band. (Usually drums and a bass player.) Chris Rankin and David I think were the most common players, but I think they went through a lot of drummers. However, all reports suggest that the later phase of The Problemist, when it was William solo in the later part of the '80's, where the most incredible, and the most wild. That's the era I would have loved to see.

They are a treasure trove of post-punk, industrial and experimental music from the 80's that I find endlessly fascinating. (And there's some acts written about in there that I've never seen anywhere else.)
