Dub Narcotic were masters of mixing funk and, shall we say, alt-rock(?) during that 90s moment.

This
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm
StringOFperils:

In the places where the more 'conventional' guitar drops out, it does feel weirder, like MX-80 dropping away into Tuxedo Moon. I prefer that over the 90s-ish no-wave kind of thing...the jury's still deliberating though
Avatar 1:03pm
Tony Coulter:

When I say I find side 2 "weirder," that, of course, means I like it more ... as is probably obvious!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:05pm
Yvang:

The weirder the better.
Avatar 1:05pm
Tony Coulter:

Exactly.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:06pm
Yvang:

Is there a hint or a way to know if it was recorded in the 80s or the 90s?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm
StringOFperils:

I could only find on-line info that probably points to other units with the same name, I'm guessing....it sounds mid-80s
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:08pm
Yvang:

I would guess 1988
Avatar 1:09pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Yvang: Not really. I'm partly going by the type of tape used -- but that may mean nothing, as they could have always run off a new dub long after recording the thing. From the sound, tho, I doubt it's much earlier than the late '80s.
Avatar 1:10pm
Tony Coulter:

@ StringOFperils: Yeah, there seem to be a zillion bands called Idiot-Savant.
Avatar 1:17pm

but only one called Corpses As Bedmates

Tony: I'm heading to the Rose City in early June. Hope to visit Mississippi Records again. Any other worthy stops?

Last weekend at a record store parking lot sale I met this guy:
https://www.sfgate.com/music/article/Avant-garde-rocker-Owen-Maercks-finds-an-audience-5714193.php

Picked up some goodies from him, including his second album, which also features Ochs, Oswald, and Kaiser. Know him?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:33pm
WR:

Nice song about the Willow Tree. I have several memories centered around the willow tree at our home during my grade school days. Neighbor friend falling and breaking his arm, willow switch sword fighting resulting in me getting eye cut which scared me that I might become blind in one eye (the eye survived), diapers used as super hero cape getting caught when my brother jumped out of the tree causing momentary hanging (actually can't remember if the diaper ripped or we helped him out - some blackout moments from those days). That's enough nostalgia about the willow tree.
  1:35pm
headcleaner:

It's sssssssso nice to be here with you all, right now
Avatar 1:37pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Dean! I do know who Owen Maercks is (have some records by him -- plus, I'm FB friends) but I don't know him personally. I do know he's quite the record collector. As far as Portland record shops, I'd recommend Little Axe and Tomorrow Records -- tho both mostly for vinyl.
  1:38pm
Dean:

Thanks! I've been to Little Axe; will visit again. Don't know Tomorrow Records. Can't wait!
Avatar 1:38pm
Tony Coulter:

Greetings, headcleaner!

Dane:

Love that sample of broken glass they use as part of the rhythm. Know Not
  1:40pm
Dean:

btw, East Bay Vivarium, mentioned in the article about Maercks, is an amazing venue.
Avatar 1:41pm
Tony Coulter:

Susanne Lewis's voice reminds me a bit of both Lydia Lunch and Lydia Tomkiw.
Avatar 1:42pm
Eric R:

I'm here in Portland. Mississippi is probably my favorite, although I don't get over there often enough. There's a bit of a controversy with Little Axe. Someone stole a DJ's records out of a club, sold them to Little Axe and the store knows (now) that they were stolen and wants the DJ to cover the cost. I'm avoiding them until this is settled.
Avatar 1:42pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, hey, Dane!
Avatar 1:43pm
Tony Coulter:

Greetings, Eric -- hadn't heard that story about Little Axe.
Avatar 1:43pm
Eric R:

hi Tony. Yeah, it's evolving, I guess. Happened very recently.
Avatar 1:46pm
Eric R:

Dean, you might try Jackpot on SE Hawthorne and, of course, Music Millennium has a huge selection although some of the smaller stores are more eclectic.
  1:47pm
Dane:

Crossroads records is a must when in Portland

Avatar 1:48pm

Yes, how could I forget them! Dig Vinyl is also good (tho small): dig-vinyl.com
  1:48pm
David in London:

A touch of the Lalo Shifrin Mission Impossible about this one. Very nice.
  1:49pm
Dean:

Thanks, all, for the record store recs. Now, do you know where I can find inexpensive high-capacity luggage?
Avatar 1:49pm
Tony Coulter:

Also, Dean, Musique Plastique is reopening soon, in ... of all places ... the Lloyd Center Mall.
  1:50pm
Dean:

I was wondering about Musique Plastique! Had a sixth sense that it might revive. Lloyd Center, otoh, I'm not so sure.
Avatar 1:51pm
Eric R:

Crossroads is something else! You can spend hours in there.
  2:05pm
The Last Phillip:

Wow. I'm loving "repetition repetition" I guess it's not available on itunes😔
  2:06pm
David in London:

Yeah, second that.
Avatar 2:08pm
Tony Coulter:

I'd be very surprised if it was on itunes. Virtually none of these Tape Hiss tapes are on itunes or spotify.
  2:13pm
David in London:

But they are on your show Tone, and that’s what counts.
  2:22pm
David in London:

I think I missed it if you said where Repetition Repetition were from Tony. Do you know?

Cannot wait for when i can visit mississippi records, i am very intrigued by that store owner/label head- does he write the liner notes for those soul comps they put out? those are a trip. the strange world release is incredible

spodiodi:

is there any any more more Repetition Repetition? loving this
Avatar 2:34pm
Tony Coulter:

Yep, there are two more tapes at least.
  2:35pm
David in London:

Right, time to leave the train and walk home. Thanks Tony. Later groovers.
Avatar 2:37pm
Tony Coulter:

In defense of Little Axe: It wouldn't be fair if the person whose records were stolen simply shifted the loss to Little Axe -- they paid out money for the records after all. Seems to me the fair thing would be for them to sell the records back for what they paid for them, without making a profit. But I don't actually know the full story, so...
Avatar 2:37pm
Tony Coulter:

See you, David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm
