Favoriting The Wiggle Room: Playlist from May 24, 2022 Favoriting

MarkTime (vintage radio airchecks), and Krys O (aka Sister Krys - WFMU alumna 1985-1991, longtime Church of the Subgenius monk. Playing cinematic ephemera, schizoid weirdos, all styles served here). Plus: surprise guests galore. (illustration courtesy of https://www.jimflora.com/)

I've got an older Jib Kidder that I quite enjoy. Should dig that out from the files...

Yes! Mashups. When they are good they are good. Like this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm
postconsumer:

Yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm
postconsumer:

I remember arguing for them, in 2001, on College Radio, and people saying it was awful. They'd probably just heard only the awful ones, is all I can say. It would be like saying rock n roll bands sucks because their neighbor's kid is practicing with his rock band a lot, and they suck...
Avatar 8:16pm
Domenic:

Good analogy Postconsumer..

The Books... damn, it's been a while. They were AMAZING.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm
postconsumer:

LOVE them. Didn't play them for a long time though, because they have a singer and they play instruments, too. I've decided to relax the rules a little since then though. Hell yes, The Books.
Avatar 8:18pm
Domenic:

"decided to relax the rules a little" sounds very human.. LOL
Avatar 👻 8:19pm
Mr Fab:

people seemed offended by the mere existence of mashups. There was a misconception that anyone - "some kid in his bedroom" - could just throw a mashup together.

And people thought it was illegal/immoral to "steal" other people's music. That hasn't been much of an issue in a while. Mark from Negativland has said that thanks to Youtube, people are now accustomed to artistic appropriation, so "we're not avant garde anymore."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm
postconsumer:

I'm very strict about my rules, when I make them up for myself. Been sober 13 years. Produce a show where everything's sample-based. Gotta be more than 50% recycled, I figure. I've got more focus in the comments today, which is fun.

Hi postconsumer!
Hi everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm
postconsumer:

I'm a sound collage artist, and I'll admit, I thought it would be easy to make a mashup, 20 years ago... I gave it a shot, full of swagger. The best I could do was match the beats up, and add in other sounds. I couldn't make anyone harmonize or anything remotely like a good mashup.
Avatar 8:22pm
Domenic:

Catch Adriana A on Twitch... For Bootie Mashups.. she has a keen ear. Mashup's are very hard to do... and Oh. this amon Tobin is wonderful
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm
Kat in Chicago:

I tried to do a mashup back in the day and failed miserably. Could probably make a worthier effort now with some of the software I've got.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm

Austin, while your show is often very different from what I'd been playing, it's rarely jarring. I like your variety!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:33pm
Austin Rich:

Thanks @Krys O. It'll be pretty straightforward this week... I needed a little cushion to clean my office and prep some other stuff. But it'll rock this week, don't worry 'bout that.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:34pm
Austin Rich:

(And thank you, @postconsumer. We do make a good one-two punch on the schedule, when that lines up.)

Lenlow - "U Hide 2"
Avatar 👻 8:43pm
Mr Fab:

Ha, yeah, the only time U2 gets played on Sheena's is when they're mashed up, collaged, parodied.

I remember lenlow from the mashup days, he was quite good (obviously)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm
postconsumer:

I love that we could now, easily, program a weekly block of so-called "classic mashups," even though, to me, I look back like it was yesterday. Getting old.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:47pm
Austin Rich:

Yeah. This all seems pretty "current" (or even "post-modern") to me. But I realize all this stuff was really in the public mind 20 years ago.

Getting older is dizzying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm
postconsumer:

SO weird.
Avatar 👻 8:51pm
Mr Fab:

20 years used to mean incredible changes. Think 1957 to 1977. But that conveyor belt kinda stopped at some point. so 20-year-old music doesn't seem like comparing Pat Boone to the Sex Pistols they way it used to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm

Hi guys
