Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Why today?
Avatar 🎭 7:01pm Listener Gregory:

Bronwyn is coming! I prophesy it! (Or maybe prophecy it; can never remember.)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:04pm diciassette:

Thurston Howl!
Avatar 🎭 7:04pm Listener Gregory:

Is it the same guy? Who played Mr. Magoo's voice in the cartoons??
Avatar 🎭 7:06pm Listener Gregory:

My words shall never pass away either. They will be preserved in the WFMU archives.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Hi WR, Gregory and diciassette!!!
Avatar 🎭 7:18pm Listener Gregory:

I have been waiting all month for a Christmas show, and here it finally is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Showing AJH's usual flair for timing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm Bronwyn Bishop:

maybe I'll do a Tonys show in October
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:20pm diciassette:

HELLO!
Avatar 🎭 7:22pm Listener Gregory:

I usually need at least 24 hours notice before I can "rock out," as you term it.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:28pm diciassette:

of course of the things of course, of course
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:29pm diciassette:

Renfield!
Avatar 🎭 7:29pm Listener Gregory:

I love The Black Rider, but it might be questioned whether the music is rock. Please don't ask me what it is, though.
Avatar 🎭 7:31pm Listener Gregory:

It is based on the actual opera (or the folktale behind it), Der Freischütz by von Weber.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:39pm diciassette:

The internet waited until a Sparks song came to have buffering issues! Now I know for sure the world has gone to poop.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:42pm diciassette:

Oh buffering, up yours! Isn't Freudonia in upstate NY?
Avatar 🎭 7:44pm Listener Gregory:

I just finished watching the Beatles documentary Get Back and was taken aback to see Alan Parsons there as the "tape operator." He was apparently an audio engineer before he began to do his own musical projects.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I should probably get around to watching that. I grew up Beatles-obsessed and then totally abandoned them for the Beach Boys when I was 20. Which reminds me that I want my boys to have a big documentary. They could call it Getcha Back
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:50pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Yeah I left them for the Beach Boys too and never went back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Beach Boys solidarity!!!!

I remember the specific moment when I became a Beach Boys convert. I was listening to the Sloop John B vocals-only which I had randomly come across on Spotify and wandering around Kensington, London. I had to stop and clutch an iron fence to deal with the beauty
Avatar 8:00pm HyperDose:

This is intense
Avatar 🎭 8:01pm TonyR:

1. AJH finally does rock opera nite, and I'm late!!
2. BB, you're still a baby at 28.
Avatar 🎭 8:02pm Listener Gregory:

Shouldn't this be titled Dümstar?
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:02pm Will the Sound Guy:

dethlok is rad
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:02pm diciassette:

Who did I leave the Beatles for? The Bangles? Oh happy happy 28!
Avatar 🎭 8:12pm TonyR:

Where oh where is the Ramones jukebox musical?
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hello, Bronwyn and B hive.
Avatar 🎭 8:14pm Listener Gregory:

I am glad to provide my unwanted opinion, which is that the best song from a rock opera is Love Reign O'er Me from Quadrophenia.
Avatar 🎭 8:14pm TonyR:

FYI - "Champagne" was written expressly for the film version of "Tommy" and is sung by Ann-Margret.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:15pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Oh wow I should look for that Sloop John B! I was driving around today and heard Kokomo which is kind of a cornball song and it was in Cocktail. but still the harmony and voices are so beautiful.
Plus all their songs are the best key for me to sing along with.
Avatar 🎭 8:16pm Listener Gregory:

Gründlehämmer is validating my earlier claim about Dümstar!
Avatar 🎭 8:17pm TonyR:

There's a "Rock Opera Society"? Who knew?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Welcome HyperDose, Will, Tony and Ken!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Lizzie: I love Carl and Al's vocals on Kokomo (and Van Dyke Parks's accordion lol)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:19pm Will the Sound Guy:

Hi Bronwyn Bishop!!!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:23pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

This show is so fun! Thanks.
Avatar 🎭 8:24pm Listener Gregory:

Escalator is an unexpected choice, BB. Good one! If only @doctorjazz were still alive to hear this. He would be so pleased!
Avatar 🎭 8:26pm TonyR:

You're surely joshing; doctorjazz has passed?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm Bronwyn Bishop:

LG plz tell me you are kidding?
Avatar 🎭 8:29pm Listener Gregory:

Well, he says he was going on vacation, but I suspect foul play.
To be fair, he *was* alive this morning, so...
Avatar 🎭 8:29pm TonyR:

Don't DO that!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm Bronwyn Bishop:

u had me thinking i was gonna have to do a eulogy *scowling emoji*
Avatar 🎭 8:30pm TonyR:

🤬🤬
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:33pm WR:

Yeah, this morning doctorjazz was commenting about having something festering or was it some music festival. I get the two confused.
  8:33pm KWilde:

Stephin Merrit’s dad?
Avatar 🎭 8:35pm TonyR:

Speaking of mortality, I read that as "Scott Fagan & Trembling Balls"
Avatar 🎭 8:37pm Listener Gregory:

Sorry! It is so often that he says that he can't tune in, and then he posts a comment saying "I managed to get a satellite signal and patch it through my car-phone to hear tonight's show."
Avatar 🎭 8:38pm TonyR:

I'll give you "satellite", mister!!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:50pm WR:

According to Discogs, you are correct KWilde.

The Fagan track pulled me to the playlist page because it reminded me of very early David Bowie. Pre major tom.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:51pm diciassette:

I also got a David Bowie vibe
Avatar 🎭 8:53pm Listener Gregory:

@TonyR, I apologize abjectly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm Bronwyn Bishop:

btw I solemnly swear I had nothing to do with this: southcoastherald.co.za...
Avatar 🎭 8:57pm Listener Gregory:

I am wrong in thinking this song borrows heavily from Tchaikovsky's Pathetique Symphony??? (Rasputin)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm Bronwyn Bishop:

going into slight OT! get those lighters out!!!
Avatar 🎭 9:00pm Listener Gregory:

"Rasputin" is also an opera by major Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara.
  9:01pm KWilde:

Great show Bronwyn B
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm Bronwyn Bishop:

thanks KWilde!!!
Avatar 🎭 9:02pm Listener Gregory:

Wonderful show, BB. Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm Bronwyn Bishop:

thank YOU LG
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 9:02pm Will the Sound Guy:

Thank you Bronwyn Bishop
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 9:03pm WR:

Thank you M BB. !!!
