What's waiting for Dan this week hm?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:03pm
Austin Rich:

Right off the bat, I want to point out that, while this was the December 26th episode of "Box 13," this show doesn't have any Christmas content or subject matter, just like most Box 13 episodes. However, I can only imagine that listeners were keenly aware that Christmas was yesterday as they were listening to this story.

Dan Holiday served in the military, and his character would most certainly have passed by 2022. So we would would celebrate someone like Dan on a day like Memorial Day.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:32pm

I noticed that they don't mention a specific Alan Ladd movie, just Alan Ladd pictures at Paramount. Maybe he was "between" movies to promote, and they were counting on some of his films being second run somewhere?

HyperDose! If you're wearing one, it can be!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:34pm
Austin Rich:

Not the worst sound this week on Voyage of The Scarlet Queen, but I did do a little EQ, to make it a little more crisp. I think the source recording is a little "slower" than the was it might have been broadcast originally, but it's hard to gauge stuff like that, so I didn't fiddle with the speed at all.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:35pm
Austin Rich:

This is the episode that the last 18 have sort of been building up to. We're in the final act of the "Kang" storyline.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:38pm
Austin Rich:

Both Red Gallagher and Phil Carney served in WWII, and in 2022, would most likely have passed away. So they, too, are people we would celebrate on Memorial Day.
Avatar 6:39pm
HyperDose:

Did a lot more actors and entertainers serve back then because of the draft?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm
Scott67:

Think they served because it was a World War mate.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:41pm
Austin Rich:

I think it might have been the other way around: a lot of kids, who wanted to become actors, were drafted before they could go out and become actors.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:42pm
Austin Rich:

But really, EVERYONE who was able, went. And they we drafted some people on top of that. To compare: we've had such ample volunteers in the US, Vietnam was the last time we ever had to draft anyone for military service. Now, we have TOO MANY kids rushing to sign up, every year.
Avatar 6:43pm
HyperDose:

That's what I'm asking, Scott, because back then they had mandatory drafts.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:45pm
Austin Rich:

I know with some people, after military service, acting was the only "exciting" thing they ever did. And still other people who served didn't really "fit" into the regular world, but the entertainment world was chaotic, sort of like military service.

  7:07pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:08pm

Alan Ladd attained the rank of corporal in the Air Force, and has since passed. So he would also be celebrated today, on Memorial Day.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:09pm

I can only imagine how fab the Fab Fam is, so of course, why hang out in the chat if they're that cool?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:10pm

Van Heflin plays another Radio Noir character: Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. (A character that was portrayed by many, MANY actors.)
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:12pm
Austin Rich:

George Stevens also directed "Giant" and the 1959 version of, "The Diary of Anne Frank."
  7:13pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Interesting to hear that philosophy about performance, that so much was conveyed through the eyes, about someone who was also a radio actor
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:13pm

"A man has to be what he is." That's such an old-timey guy line.

"A Cowboy Wanna-Be" is the name of my next album.

"Farming with Alan Ladd!" That would have been a successful reality show, for sure.

"Born to make trouble for men." Ouch.

I love when the let Korla Pandit do some "ambient" or "experimental" bits on this show.
  7:23pm
Charles:

Yes it's very enjoyable.
Avatar 7:27pm
Mr Fab:

i may have mentioned before that the Korla Pandit discography begins a few years after this show. But clearly his organ style is already established.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:28pm
Austin Rich:

He must have been established enough for this show to hire him to do "exotic" music. I'm sure someone has cut together all his jams from this show for a release somewhere.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:33pm
Austin Rich:

This episode has a script by Ernest Kinoy, based on a idea he and George Lefferts had. They were the two writers who adapted all the Dimension X stories for radio scripts.
  7:35pm
Charles:

When was Dimension X originally broadcasted? Night time?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:35pm
Austin Rich:

Yeah. As I understand it, a "prime time" or later show. (8 PM or later.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm
Otis:

Hello Austin and Castaways.
  7:40pm
Charles:

I assume radio didn't play for 24 hours a day back then?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:41pm
Austin Rich:

While the story does seem a little heavy handed with some fairly obvious imagery, I still appreciate this story.

Good Hello, Otis!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:43pm
Austin Rich:

Depending on the era, there weren't always 24 hour broadcast days. In the 30s, there were often gaps between Midnight and Six AM. Other stations had shorter or longer broadcast days, and other would come on in the morning, and then again in the evening, to cover the most listened periods. But by the late 50s, most stations were airing overnight content, mostly music. (Since you could hire a DJ to spin records during the "off" hours.)
  7:44pm
Charles:

DJs spinning records for the radio in the dead of the night? Madness!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:45pm
Austin Rich:

By the late 50's you had a few cultural revolutions, that led to be people actually leading nocturnal lifestyles, periodically! But really, the influx of Teenagers after WWII led to people looking for something to listen to during the off-hours, and often, a radio was cheaper than a record player and a stack of new singles.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:47pm
Austin Rich:

You can hear some samples of the kind of "music" DJing that was heard in the late 1930's on a recording called, "The Complete Broadcast Day."

archive.org...
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:47pm
Austin Rich:

I think at least the first hour is just music DJing. September 21st, 1939.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
Austin Rich:

Looks like the first two hours are music, actually.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
Austin Rich:

And again, this station in this recordings for the complete broadcast day was only on air for 19 hours a day.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:50pm
Austin Rich:

Coming in on the last 10 minutes of the show. Any last questions or anything?
  7:51pm
Charles:

Thanks for the radio knowledge and for the great shows!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:51pm
Austin Rich:

Thank you, Charles. I do love old radio.
Avatar 7:55pm
HyperDose:

Austin may know a little too much about radio. Careful, that's how people disappear 👀
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:56pm
Austin Rich:

There's still more to know, for sure. I don't know it all... yet.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:56pm
Austin Rich:

I feel like The X-Files borrowed this story for a lot of storylines.
