Jerry Reed  Lord Mr. Ford   Favoriting Lord Mr. Ford  RCA  1973  Funny how the problems of 1973 are the same issues we have 50 years later. Also funny how we keep electing the same kinds of governments who happily pave through farmlands, make money for oil families & buy off the car owning public with money that was meant to go to healthcare. Oh well. At least it keeps the song current. I know this song better than many other songs in my life, my dad had it on many mixtapes & I heard it many times over the years.    0:01:31 (Pop-up)

Crass  Big A Little A   Favoriting Best Before 1984 (Crassical Collection)  Crass Records  1980 / 1986  The B-Side to 1980's Nagasaki Nightmare, later released on the "Best Before 1984" compilation of 1986. One of my favourite songs of theirs.    0:05:24 (Pop-up)
Arcadia [-- Wrong Speed --]  Election Day (An Early Rough Mix) [-- Wrong Speed --]   Favoriting The Flame / Flame Game / Election Day EP  Capitol / EMI  1985  3 members of Duran Duran in their 1985 side-venture "Arcadia", just before Duran Duran became 3 members anyway. Eventually they'd sort it out. Pitching this to a different speed helps. (A bit.) It's election day here in the province of Ontario. The warped and woozy mood is accurate.    0:11:38 (Pop-up)
Slagheap  Horsey Girl   Favoriting Slagheap  Spurge Recordings  2019  The band name was a toss-up between Slagheap and Solar Anus. Catherine, the band's bassist, claims she came up with the winning title, but Sadie, the group's guitarist and synth player, isn't sure. "There's another Slagheap," adds Lydia, the band’s other guitarist, "and their song goes: Slagheap stands for fun and friends. And I'd agree with that. Energetic post punk nonsense from four women in their pants. Melodic, naive and raucous songs from Bristol.    0:20:27 (Pop-up)
Dog  Daddy Got Pony   Favoriting Daddy Got Pony Single  Dog  2022  This is the second single we've played by London's Dog. This second single from the South East londoners, is beginning to cement their reputation as deconstructive musical raconteurs. Here are nifty arrangers whose will is bent to wang you full-steam through their absurdo mindfuck portals. Like laboratory madcaps encircled by phials upon phials of gauchely coloured fluids, Dog mix and mangle chemicals with sardonic experimentalism. We like this Dog.  *   0:22:51 (Pop-up)
Beige Banquet  Wired/Weird   Favoriting Beta  Just Step Sideways  2021  London Post Punk band made up mostly of one guy, his name being Tom Brierley. Formed in 2020 or ‘The Year That Shall Not Be Named’ London-based Beige Banquet play drum-machine-driven and self-produced outsider/weirdo/art punk. ‘Wired/Weird’ is the first in an ambitious collection of tracks written, tracked and produced in a dank East-London bedroom during the first part of 2020. Forced by circumstances familiar to many musicians, Tom had to switch focus from performing to recording, and these tracks were the result.    0:27:23 (Pop-up)
Spread Joy  Discomfort Is Palpable   Favoriting II  Feel It Records  2022  In just 14 minutes, the Chicago band blasts through 10 delightfully unfussed tracks, thriving on simplicity, spontaneity, and some good old fashioned moxie. It is in many ways the perfect COVID record—a hedonistic escape and reminder of a time where everything wasn’t quite so dour and serious. Oddly fitting then that the record almost certainly wouldn’t have happened at all if not for the pandemic. According to both vocalist Briana Hernandez and guitarist Raidy Hodges, Spread Joy the album was their plan B when it became clear that gigs were no longer an option. Re: Short Songs..the band says "It wasn’t necessarily a rule but there’s a certain point where everyone gets it and once you get past that moment, I don’t see a point in continuing. I feel like everyone has a short attention span these days and I do too. It’s ok! And even if it’s the bad stuff, at least it will only last 60 seconds! Just hang tight!"    0:31:11 (Pop-up)
Chemtrails  Eternal Shame   Favoriting Eternal Shame Single  PNKSLM Recordings  2022  The garage-punk and acid-corroded new-wave outfit that is Chemtrails first emerged as a 5-piece in 2016, having started life as the lo-fi bedroom recording project of romantic partners Mia Lust and Laura Orlova. Sung in her native German tongue, prayer, lamenting that the world would be better without life in it. Mother Nature responds to the prayer with love and kindness but it falls on deaf ears.  *   0:32:22 (Pop-up)

The Ex  From The Top Of My Lungs   Favoriting From The Top Of My Lungs (Split 7")  Jvtandt  2015  "The Ex started playing in 1979. Using guitars, bass, drums and voice as their starting point The Ex have continued to musically explore undiscovered areas right up to the present day: collaborations with jazz musicians and an Iraqi-Kurdish band, Kamagurka, Tom Cora, Sonic Youth, Han Bennink, Jan Mulder, Shellac and Wolter Wierbos. In 2002 The Ex set up a lively musical exchange with Ethiopia." The Ex on Bandcamp    0:46:49 (Pop-up)
Gong Gong Gong 工工工  Ride Your Horse 騎你的馬   Favoriting Phantom Rhythm 幽靈節奏 (幽霊リズム)  Wharf Cat Records  2019  "Guitar and bass duo Gong Gong Gong (工工工) charge out from Beijing’s underground scene with a distinct vision and uncompromising sense of purpose. The duo taps into a wavelength uniting musical cultures, drawing on inspirations ranging from Bo Diddley to Cantonese opera, West African desert blues, drone, and the structures of electronic music. Gong Gong Gong’s debut LP, Phantom Rhythm, is their mission statement: between the locomotive chug and banjo twang of Tom Ng’s guitar and Joshua Frank’s thumping bass harmonics, an aura of ghostly snare hits and timpani overtones emerges. Over Frank’s enigmatic melodies, Ng sings in Cantonese, piecing together abstract tales of absurdity and doubt, desire and lust. Formed in 2015, the band’s earliest shows were in Beijing underpass tunnels and DIY spaces. Ng and Frank are both outsiders who call the city their home: Ng, who was born in Hong Kong, defiantly sings in his native tongue, while Frank, originally from Montreal, has lived in Beijing on and off since childhood. (He is the English translator of Ng’s lyrics, adding another layer to the duo’s close collaboration). A compact, almost telepathic unit, Gong Gong Gong use their minimalistic tools and idiosyncratic playing style to challenge the notions of rock n’ roll, stripping the form down to its bare essentials: rhythm, melody, and grit." gonggonggong.bandcamp.com    0:51:07 (Pop-up)

Acid Klaus ft. Maria Uzor  Party Sized Away Day   Favoriting Party Sized Away Day Single  Zen F.C.  2022  Adrian Flanagan is the hardest working musician in North England, without a doubt. This is his newest project, with vocals from Maria Uzor of Sink Ya Teeth. Flan's other projects include Moonlandingz, Eccentronic Research Council, International Teachers of Pop, Adult Entertainment, and of course the OG Kings Have Long Arms. He is a pal of Phil Oakey, Fat White Family, and also performed a show with the Fall back in the day. This guy never stops. Fun fact: Flan also has a Jack Russell terrier whose name is Klaus.  *   1:06:45 (Pop-up)
Decius ft. Fat White Family  Look Like A Man - Trashmouth rmx   Favoriting Look Like A Man EP  Decius Trax  2022  Decius the project of Fat White Family’s Lias Saoudi, Paranoid London’s Quinn Whalley, and Trashmouth Records’ Luke and Liam May. The group has been recording tracks since 2014, Saoudi having been inspired by the depraved (yet artistically liberating) experience of a night dancing/fucking/taking substances at the Berghain nightclub in Berlin.    1:11:54 (Pop-up)
Trashmouth Records/Decius/Taman Shud  The Hex Inverted - Decius Vs. Trashmouth RMX.   Favoriting Trashmouth Records 10 Years Still Not Dead  Trashmouth Records  2021  Also...this story must be told: It was Quinn’s idea to start booking some early live shows, the most pivotal of which was at 2019’s Glastonbury Festival. One of the people behind the festival’s high-concept clubbing area Block9, Gideon Berger, had been one of those early fans of ‘Come To Me Villa’, and he booked Decius for a brief live slot at the zone’s central queer club The NYC Downlow, which was modelled after New York’s legendary 80s venue Paradise Garage. It did not go quite as planned. The magic mushrooms Lias was using to calm pre-show anxiety at the time had not arrived as he’d planned, so he broke his own code to never take cocaine before a gig. “I was really nervous,” he recalls. “It was a club, everyone was super hip, it wasn’t my patch. So I just did way too much Charlie.” With Luke, Liam and Quinn playing behind him in custom-built black boxes, he strode out onto the catwalk stage in a gold suit, doing his best to impress the “disgustingly beautiful people absolutely everywhere” as he strutted, but when it came time to sing his first note, he instead vomited all over the stage and audience. Nevertheless, Lias styled it out. “You just quietly curse the day you were born until it’s over, channel that self-despising energy, and then it’s the end,” he says. “It went down really well!”    1:15:27 (Pop-up)
The Umlauts  Um Politik   Favoriting Ü  Prah Recordings  2021  The genesis of The Umlauts resides in Stroud, where the group’s song writing duo Alfred Lear and Oliver Offord grew up and started writing together in the Gloucestershire town’s SVA Artspace. Treating the space as something of a refuge in which they could experiment, the pair delved deep into synthesisers and record collections alike, drawn to The Fall and other first generational post-punks like X-Ray Spex, as well as the likes of Bjork and The Knife. It's at art college in London and the addition of lyricists and vocalists Annabelle Mödlinger and Maria Vittoria Faldini that’s crystallised them as a band. Their debut EP is a tightly hewn mix of mechanical synth-pop, spiky no wave and bristling post-punk, with Mödlinger and Faldini’s multilingual lyrics giving it a razor-sharp focus.    1:19:34 (Pop-up)

Sun's Signature  Underwater   Favoriting Sun's Signature  Partisan Records  2022  "Sun’s Signature—the new project from Cocteau Twins’ Elizabeth Fraser and her partner Damon Reece—have shared a new song called “Underwater.” It’s the latest single from the group’s self-titled debut EP—due out physically on June 18 via Partisan. “Underwater” follows Sun’s Signature’s first single “Golden Air,” Fraser’s first proper new music in 13 years. The pair has been working on the record since Cocteau Twins broke up in 1997; the project’s current form was inspired by an invitation from ANOHNI to perform at the Meltdown Festival at the Royal Festival Hall in 2012."  *   1:33:48 (Pop-up)
Kuunatic  Desert Empress Pt. 1   Favoriting Gate of Klüna  Glitterbeat Records  2021  "KUUNATIC is a thrilling Tokyo based tribal-psych trio bolstered by diverse global sonics and powerful female vocals. Drawing on the members’ different musical and cultural perspectives, their music explores ritual drumming, pulsing bass lines, atmospheric keyboard sounds and Japanese traditional instruments. Having previously released an EP (“Kuurandia” / 2017) as well as a split 7” (with Taiwanese fuzz psych garage band Crocodelia), “Gate of Klüna” is KUUNATIC’s much awaited debut album. Produced by Tim DeWit (Gang Gang Dance) the record reveals a mesmerizing soundworld that transcends genres and hemispheres and succeeds in being both boldly experimental and wildly catchy. KUUNATIC are Fumie Kikuchi on keys and vocals, Yuko Araki on drums and vocals and Shoko Yoshida on bass and vocals. ---------” Kuunatic Bandcamp    1:40:31 (Pop-up)

"---------- Creating a world has many advantages. Notions of time and space can be bent, Urizen-like, to the will and reasoning of the creator. Although formed in Tokyo in 2016, a city that is very much on this planet, Kuunatic first looked to another heavenly body to shape their project. In interviews the band have cited that their name is drawn from kuu, the Finnish word for the moon; inspired in part by original Finnish guitarist, Sanni. Keyboardist Fumie helps guide the uninitiated. “Kuunatic’s musical concept is a fantasy. Our first EP’s title ‘Kuurandia’ is the name of the fantasy planet we live on. The EP was a prologue. And this [debut album] is a concept album about how the planet began, evolved and was explored. It consists of eight songs and each song has a story to tell.” Kuunatic Bandcamp

DEADLETTER  Line The Cows   Favoriting Line The Cows Single  M.A.D. Records  2022  For London-based label Make A Dance’s third release they’re doing things a little different. Their first few outings – both original material and the label’s own M.A.D edits – have been more focused on the realms of house, old school electro and synth-driven disco, but now they’re taking things down the post-punk route. Says their singer: "I can remember becoming infatuated with John Cooper Clarke when I was about 15. I think his acerbic Northern delivery slotted perfectly alongside my angsty teenage brain. The same can be said for Mark E Smith. I’d put ‘Twat’ on in my room and write out the lyrics as JCC spoke them in the hope of being able to one day recite it at a dinner or a family gathering. Alas, I’m still to be presented with an opportunity to do so. Hopefully one of my nearest and dearest will have a child soon and I can ruin the christening"    1:52:18 (Pop-up)
moa moa  Information   Favoriting Information Single  Incredibly Bland  2022  “Information is about exploring sexuality in an age of online promiscuity,” singe James Ratcliffe explains. “After all the scandals about the NSA snooping and trading our nudes, I expected the culture to change around nudes, but it didn’t. Dick pics from strangers are like pocket change on Grindr, and I get it… I feel unperturbed knowing that random NSA employees may be trading genitals like baseball cards, and when I’m talking to a pretty girl or boy about private things, I just accept it’s not private - even though I wish it was.”    1:55:50 (Pop-up)

Brian Destiny  Feed The Horse   Favoriting Brian's Got Talent  Dash The Henge  2022  Brian Destiny is a seeker. Brian Destiny is truth. Brian Destiny has nothing left to sacrifice.Songs about duality and self-discovery seem to be a common theme with Destiny. On “Feed the Horse,” distorted, churning rhythms back the tale of a sobering revelation: “I never knew/I never could guess/the shadow of life/is the shadow of death.” The voyage culminates in an outsider intellectual’s increasing discontent with the general population’s blind conformity to societal expectations. “Everyone’s driving/Some people are flying/Where’s my horse?” Destiny sings, segueing into the unforgettable line, “Where’s my motherfucking giddy-up?” It’s a serious, heavy, song, but not so much so as to deny us a laugh. Brian Destiny is Nathan Saoudi, brother of Lias Saoudi of Decius, who we played earlier. And that kids, is how we tie everything up with a tidy, neat bow.    2:04:05 (Pop-up)
