A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

If memory serves, Cosmic Jim (a DJ at my previous station) introduced me to Morgen. And at that time, I don't think a proper re-issue had happened, so I was happy to see it is more easily available.

Are there math-capchas on your end, when you post a comment? All I have to do is click a button, which gives me a chance to proofread my mistakes, and still post them anyway.

Hi Austin Rich. Yeah Stiv’s later career is fine in my book. I love Dead Boys, and like the solo stuff. I’ll get down with Lords of the New Church. I either have very good taste, or very low standards. Don’t matter. Don’t care.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:27pm

I do like that their "plan" in this episode of Max Headroom is to launch a "micro-link" channel, get subscribers, and kill regular television... like small streaming channels sort of did?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:27pm
Austin Rich:

@ramencitykid: There's always "one more" Yo La Tengo album. That's their secret!

In the mid-70s in Coos Bay, one of my friends' dad worked for Warner Cable. My friend said he was involved in some sort of project to provide an on-demand movie service. But nothing ever came of it until at least 30 years later.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:31pm
Austin Rich:

Ha! That's great, Mr. X!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:32pm
Austin Rich:

My Dad worked for a phone networking company in the 80's. He kept talking about how there was gonna be a "cable channel" that would be for your computer, and that would be how you would get news and software and stuff. I remember thinking, "My dad smokes too much pot."

Which might have been true, but the internet wasn't too much later... and he was right.
Avatar 9:34pm
Mr. X:

Did your dad predict that before or after Max Headroom aired?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:35pm
Austin Rich:

This was inside knowledge; his company was connected to Intel. But I just knew that my dad worked with phones, and had an interest in computers... so it sounded like wishful thinking to a kid.

  Eleventh Dream Day
  9:35pm
egould:

Hey Rich don’t get hung up on externalities. That’s stuff you can’t control. Focus on what you can control; your life, your relationships, this radio show. The other radio show. Bring joy and goodness to those things, and you bring more joy and goodness into the world.

But to get caught up in the misery projected in the news media is a waste of life. It’s degrades your soul. I don’t know what purpose it serves, but it’s not to uplift you; or to unify people in peace and understanding.

My two cents.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:36pm
Austin Rich:

Yeah. Ramencitykid, you COMPLETELY introduced me to Eleventh Dream Day. And I thank you for it!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:37pm

The Max Headroom / Martin Newell connection is: Martin Newell lived with Steve Roberts, who wrote Max Headroom. They are still good friends, to this day. (Though they haven't seen each other in person in ages.)

We do and this is a real goodie, too! My guess was Wake Up and Dream which... also a goodie!

Heather and I need to re-edit the Martin Interview we did, and air in on this show. He told some great stories, and he's just a hilarious dude.

Psychedelic powerpop and so very British. Love Martin Newell.

We should probably catch up with Martin; Heather met him in person once, and they're basically best friends now.

He's so sweet and fun and cool. Such a great guy and so freaking talented.....

He was so nice to us. And gave us the dirt on Steve, so that was cool!

I like his Twitter feed. Always posting videos performing songs in his apartment. Acoustic guitar or piano. Always cheeky.

Sometimes on electric guitar, until the neighbors complain.

The model on the cover of Exotica II is about as exotic as mini-marshmallows suspended in red jell-o.

Every once in awhile, Martin Denny just has a nice looking woman on the cover of his albums, and they aren't doing the exotic-girl-showing-cleavage shot.

Sometimes. I mean, he knows what his audience likes.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:23pm

It does sort of look like that, @Hyperdose!

That's funny, I was just thinking abt the Mekons a second ago - dream logic!

@ramencitykid: thanks to you and a review I read written by Lester Bangs, I'm quite a Mekons fan.

There was only one model on Martin Denny’s album covers: Sandy Warner, β€œthe exotica girl.” She could pull off a lot of looks.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
Austin Rich:

@Mr. Fab: really? I didn't realize! I assumed they were different girls. That's cooler that it's all the same girl!

"Insouciant Martian" is a good look
  10:26pm
Heather:

As Austin said, I have actually been in the very apartment those videos are filmed in! At least in 2010, Martin is so cool and nice that, if you email that you're showing up in Wivenhoe, he'll be glad to hang out at The Greyhound, if I remember the pub name correctly, and maybe even invite you for afters at his place.

Took me a long time to "get" The Soft Boys. At first I was sort of puzzled. But I think, in one of the rare cases with me, it took a lot of repeated listening to become a big fan. (Usually I immediately obsess over something the first time I hear it and listen to it 100s of times in a row, torturing roommates and partners, as the @ramencitykid can attest to.

But with The Soft Boys, I listened to them once a year or so, for a number of years, and then really got into them much, much later. But it took a long while.
