A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

i finally got around to checking out her post-Lynch album "The Art of Being a Girl" earlier this year. And yes, it's not particularly Lynch-y but still pretty cool

Doop! Howdy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm
ultradamno:

I got slightly larger monitor a while back and was surprised at how much adjusting to it took
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm
Rich in Washington:

I've had two monitors for a couple of years but weirdly don't take advantage of them while doing radio, i.e.: having playlist entry stuff in one and actual playlist/chat in the other purely because of a minor tactile thing but I've made it slightly easier to do so now and am trying to make it habit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm
Kat in Chicago:

One of my biggest issues with only going to the office occasionally is that when I do, I have to spend half an hour futzing with the monitors at whatever desk I'm at. I've started booking my preferred spot well in advance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm
ultradamno:

@mrfab She had a falling out with Lynch for a period, it might make sense she would want avoid the association for that time

Ben in Fargo:

I am much appreciating these tracks by Julee Cruise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm

All the Twin Peak soundtracks and Julee albums are something that my Coco and I listen to on long road trips.

Rich in Washington:

I'm glad you're enjoying it, Ben in Fargo! Welcome!
Avatar 8:18pm
Mr Fab:

ultradamno: Ah, i was wondering why she was dropped from his soundtracks. Didn't know that they had issues. Just figured Lynch wanted to mix it up. But his soundtracks have not been the same.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm
MHLee:

Somehow didn't realize this show is 3 hours
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm
Rich in Washington:

It didn't use to be. It was originally The Cratedigger's Lung Adventure Hour, as I didn't think I could do another long show as I used to do two other shows on another station but then I kept adding an hour to it as I got used to it.
Stay tuned for the six hour version in 2024.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm
MHLee:

Funny thing about twin peaks is the town is way smaller then it has a right to be at 51,000 people
Avatar 8:21pm

six? ican't tell if you're joking. i can't take most 3-hour shows. and 4-hour shows are just too much for me. 6!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm
ultradamno:

She talks about it on one the BTS things in one of the boxsets (as I recall it was kind of a pushing back on a directive from Lynch in studio that spun out). She did come back for The Return series.

Lynch and Badalamenti would never have found Cruise if they weren't too cheap to license a This Mortal Coil/Tim Buckey cover for this movie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm
Kat in Chicago:

Seriously, Rich? They wanted "Song to the Siren"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm

Yes, but it was too cost prohibitive so Angelo recommended Julee as he'd worked with her in some kind of workshop.

SO glad they didn't use "Song to the Siren". "Mysteries of Love" really pointed towards such an unique approach to both music and filmmaking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm
ultradamno:

She had been in TV movies of Marvelous World Of Oz, Alice In Wonderland and Red Shoes in 81-83 that are hard to find but all seem to fold into the Lynchian worldview nicely

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm

Yes, a lot of us already had our own associations with "Song to the Siren". So much better that they went with Julee and started something magical and unique to Blue Velvet and beyond.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm

One thing I read today said her husband reported he played The B-52s "Roam" for her as send-off music
Avatar 8:41pm

Cowboy junkies is a good reference, MHLee. As is Portishead. I think they all came out around the same time, and kinda got lumped in together.

I believe Portishead actually did admit the "Twin Peaks influnce on them. Not entirely a coincidence.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm

I heard someone give a paper recently that claimed hyperpop was the new punk -- fast tempos, creating fluid identities, using the tools at their disposal in a rude and untutored way. --music as a brief, confrontational flash.

Rich in Washington:

We're enjoying season 3 of The Boys, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm
ultradamno:

Maybe it'll pop up on the soundtracks for more kickback to Ivy. Most of those have focused on the original moog score stuff (which is good stuff, btw), but they've never got this kind of attention over pop song placement before either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm
ultradamno:

I'd like to see The Boys but I'm not getting another streaming service. Aya Cash rules all, though. I'm absolutely knocked out by the Barry/The Baby HBO block right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm
Rich in Washington:

Yeah, I hadn't noticed song placement in the show before, but then, they weren't using stuff like The Cramps until now.
The score is good. It's fun, period appropriate synth stuff. I quite enjoy some of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm

Best title I've stumbled across recently:
"Harry Mudie Meets King Tubby's in Dub Conference." I wonder what the conference table looked like? Square, round, rectangular, horseshoe? What protocols were involved? Did they use emissaries or address each other directly?

Iowa City is kinda nice -- Writer's Workshop draws a lot of interesting people. The Tape Beatles were from Iowa City! A huge Quaker Oats plant is nearby, and the attendant fumes were widely referred to as "The Smell of Money."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm
Kat in Chicago:

LOL The Tape Beatles are from Iowa? Whoda thunkit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm
WR:

Oop. Kat in Chicago, I thought I was following you on bandcamp but the Kat I am following (per my view) shows your collection at 1950. Or the public view is limited or different.

Thinking Fellers were from Iowa originally, I believe. I'm pretty sure it was an interview with them that I learned it's an acronym for "idiots out wandering around"

Hope everyone's having a groovy Friday evening/Saturday morning (depending on which hemisphere you're on).
We're in the middle of another 'atmospheric river'. Just pounding down like a fucking monsoon.

I've seen House of Large Sizes a couple of times, they used to play the venue I worked at.
WR: that's weird. Are you following Kat O'Rly? (I'll follow you back if I'm not already)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm

Oh wow. I didn't know Thinking Fellers were from Iowa.

zip, our last place was great except that it was in an alley that attracted hubub and it was like we were living with the people downstairs -- old victorian place wasn't built for it, but man do i regret it. Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm
Kat in Chicago:

I don't usually put my AC in the window till July but it's supposed to be 95 one day next week so I think I will take care of that this weekend. I only have it in the bedroom, just keep the ceiling fans going everywhere else.

Rte 17A from Tuxedo to Warwick NY is one of the best motorcycle roads I've ever encountered. Even saw a couple of Hells Angels blasting through a month ago. Rich assholes from the city bring their Ferraris and Lambos up here and have recently turned the road into a massive speed trap. When I lived in NYC I had a track bike with no brakes. It was a kind of dreamy nightmare. Of course I wrecked it. Bicycle Film Fest was always great fun.

Mr Fab:

please, PLEASE, let us not confuse the angel-headed hipsters with what i call the YUTsies - Young Urban Trendies.

Rich in Washington:

YUTsies! I love it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
ultradamno:

Yeah, I'm not in love with the word, but it has been all tangled up with modern yuppies in an unfair way
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm

I've taken to calling some of my town's recent transplants Condo Commandos. Urbanites who live downtown, drive rents up, patronize waterfront businesses with $25 hamburgers, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
Zipperhead7:

I'd like to get a Mega Hub electric unicycle, but not $10K like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm

Mr Fab, i don't know if you choose the songs that play after, but i was delighted to hear that John Doe song come up... one of my faves and fit my blathering rather well (i could go on), but probably no one will read this (and think it may just be a robot).

felt like magic anyway

thanks again, Rich!
