Mr Fab:

I used to hit the "easy-listening" section of what was my local used record store in the '80s/early '90s - that's where they dumped the weird old stuff, usually priced for 99 cents: Esquivel, Moogs, cha-cha, whistling records. Not sure how "easy" it was to listen to these, haha - was cool to throw 'em in with the Butthole Surfers, Public Enemy, what ever else I was buying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm
ironybread:

So it turns out this is a bit too easy to loop as "Taste the flavor of the maaaaaaaaaan"
Avatar 1:19pm

that may have been Ken Nordine, but speaking in a more high-pitched voice than usual.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm
WR:

Wed Howard the narrator?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm
Zipperhead7:

Bill Walker: unrecognized compositional genius. This is U.S. classical music -- tap your toe and sell, sell sell! I was gonna write a book on Top-40, but when I interviewed deejays from the 50s and 60s, they were essentially car salesman who didn't give a damn about the music -- they actually enjoyed being told what to play.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm

1968 is such a great year for peculiar records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm
ironybread:

Hi Zip! Iiiiiiinteresting about DJs from the 50s and 60s, secretly I think I suspected that was who they really were all this time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm
ironybread:

Hi Rich! Yes the Industry definitely gave the kids the car keys in 1967-1969
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm
fred:

Big party downstairs so I can't hear much of the show (well, mixed with outside music). Right now they're having a fashion show for kids. Many countries represented, which is fun. Ya Rayah now, so I'm guessing Algeria
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm
ironybread:

Hiya fred!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm
Zipperhead7:

Never heard a wah-wahed music box before. Yeah, I focused on the Todd Storz and Gordon McLendon stations. They were sales machines. Storz even had guidelines for his ad salesmen -- for example, pants should not extend more than two inches above the ankle.
Avatar 1:38pm
Mr Fab:

makes sense. The DJ's job was to announce, be funny and engaging, prepare comedy bits, sound fx, etc. Which I also like - I like to think that we have plenty of DJs here who combine both the AM and FM approaches.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm
spodiodi:

dave's not here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm
ironybread:

Zip - I discovered the concept of the wah-wah music box in my early teens when I took the music box I'd had since I was six, the one that played a theme from Tchaikovsky's "Romeo and Juliet", and washed it. After that, the rotary dial never failed to wah-wah it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm
fred:

@Mr Fab: so Clay Pigeon is a throwback style DJ?
Avatar 1:43pm
Mr Fab:

yes, Fred, I guess he is. Didn't Ken say that he needs to get others to pick his music?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm
ironybread:

Based on how impossible it is for me to program a good show every week with just two hours of decent music, it would be 100% impossible for me to program a three-hour daily show five days a week
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm
fred:

@Mr Fab: Then again, Ken did ask help from listener for his infamous Toxic show, so... (that also proved we enjoyed the abuse, I did submit one)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm
ironybread:

Nic Harcourt was accused of being a bit of a milquetoast when he hosted KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic from 1998-2008 but I realize now he was lucky to be able to get just a small portion of the music he actually liked on the show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm
fred:

They just announced a karaoke hour starting in ten minutes. Could be interesting/terrible

@spodiodi: I did order a couple of books, but only because my regular bookshop wouldn't order them. I'm afraid Columbia University Press joined their blacklist, I'll try another bookshop before fueling Bezos' rockets

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm

That sounds like a reasonable action, fred

For years I've been giving my parents Amazon cards as gifts (as apparently my siblings were also doing) and eventually my mother sheepishly informed me that they didn't know how to redeem them. So one day while visiting I helped them enter what turned out to be several hundred dollars worth of gift card credit. They were soon awash in all kinds of luxurious junk from China, etc.

Yep, the whole point to gift cards is that they'll hopefully be lost or forgotten. Or that the chosen gift will cost more than the card (or less, and the merchant keeps the difference).
Jesus, I really need to change my attitude today. The cynicism is corroding my soul. Peace, love and soul power, everyone!

I think the real hidden gem of the internet is ex-DJ's selling their CD collection for a penny a pop on ebay. Aside from jewel case imperfections (which can be replaced), the booklets and discs are usually mint/near mint. Found some deluxe editions with bonus DVDs that way too.
