"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Don Henley wakes up in a cold sweat. His vision is dark around the edges. What day is it? Must be Thursday. Maybe. Last night got weird, some memory of driving a canary yellow Dodge with a person in a gorilla suit riding shotgun. Was I the gorilla? No. The gorilla was driving. Don rises from the futon, unsteady, heads for the bathroom. As he passes a bedside mirror he pauses. The gorilla mask is still on his head. He chuckles, lifts the gorilla head off his own head. He pauses again. The mirror! He drops the gorilla head, closes his eyes, rubs his eyes, opens them again. It can't be. There in the mirror! Glenn Frey! To go to bed Don Henley and wake up Glenn Frey!

1981, Chinatown, corner of Hester and Eldridge. Approx. 11 PM, weeknight. Don Henley and Don Johnson are standing outside a flophouse, it's clear they are in disguise (Henley is wearing running pants with a matching jacket and "ransom shades", Johnson is wearing a full length fur coat and a blond wig). Johnson says "is this it? where's the guy?" Henley responds "you're gonna make us look like narcs. Jesus, have some patience." Henley takes out a small notepad and writes that down: "Jesus--patience." Just above that are other lines, "Hester--futon. Recurring--gorilla. Tequila Moonrise. What does loquacious mean?" Henley looks up, says "No, we wait."
