Hey Handy, I’ve got what I’m told by the kiddies today to be an IPod classic. Holds 160gig of tunes, had that circular spin thing to scroll and you press a button to make it play. It’s been a prized possession (almost my entire cd collection on it), and had thought to pass it on to my kid someday.
For months now the input jack to play it through a speaker has progressively gotten worse; from very staticky to only playing half-connected (which was pretty cool in a way, like listening to a 60’s mono album balanced to only one side), to where it now won’t play at all.
Know any good tech people locally who might be able to fix the input jack?

Handy Haversack:
Hey, Zinn, hmmmm. Having recently had to fix a laptop, I had called a bunch of places. I think that Mikey's Hook-Up does not do service anymore, though you could call them and ask for a recommendation -- that's what I did, as I recall, which led me to where I ended up. I *just* threw away my page of notes yesterday (well, "page": it was a folded-up envelope). But there was a place in Manhattan that did Mac repairs, and they were very nice when I called. Ah, that was Rossmann Repair Group:

Let me see if that envelope is still in the recycling.
Oh, and there was a guy in LIC who was very nice when I called him. Hang on, let me see what I can find.
That said, the Mac Store people basically started laughing at K8 as she would bring in her Ipod Classic for repairs.

Man, it’s amazing that NYC.gov and 311 combined haven’t a fraction of the wherewithal that Handy does as a compassionate and connected citizen of this crumbling city (my partner told me of a disconcerting report she recently read about, that specifically said there’s a stretch of the BQE that’s falling apart).
I’m gonna start making calls, thanks to you wonderful folks. So K8’s been down the road also of trying to salvage the classic IPod? Man, I really hope someone can repair the jack.
Was already thinking of Mikey’s. Was hoping to stay on the Island here, instead of having to ride the bike into Manhattan. But that just may be the case.
Zinn The Mood:
Gonna try the wooden toothpick remedy (if I can find one), thanks L Gregory!

Where does one get Deoxit (and are there other household uses for it)?
Are you suggesting that it’s easy to actually replace the battery oneself? Not gonna trust myself to do that; I’m waaay too not mechanically-inclined. I’m just a dumb drummer over here, who occasionally ham-fistedly fiddles around on an acoustic guitar!
Thanks everyone!

Battery replacement is really easy. When you order a replacement battery, get the "kit" with it. The kit contains a couple of small tools to open the case of the iPod. The battery itself just plugs in. If I remember correctly, the first one I swapped took me about 10 minutes. Subsequent swaps were faster because I'd already figured out how to open the case. Even a drummer can do it!

Can’t help getting excited whenever hearing anything on the radio by the Sabs (while just moving the car for parking regs). Heard the deluxe version of Technical Ecstasy the other day and got lost in the revelry of what it meant to me as a rebellious, truth-seeking Catholic School kid. Ah, they did indeed have a big part in saving my sanity (ironically as all the while Ozzy always cried out about his own sanity slipping away).
