Dream Nails  Vagina Police 2.0   Favoriting Vagina Police 2.0/Corporate Realness Single  Dine Alone Music  2020  Dream Nails is an English DIY punk/riot grrrl band from London founded in 2015. The group identify themselves as “punk witches” and are known for their riotous live shows that mix storming punk guitar with sweet three-part harmonies. Dream Nails identify themselves as punk witches and their genre as "witch punk". They claim to write "hexes, not songs" and are best known for their "hex on misogynist politicians" Deep Heat.    0:02:35 (Pop-up)
Mhaol  Desperation   Favoriting Gender Studies  TULLE  2021  Currently based between Dublin, London and Bristol, M(h)aol (pronounced “male”) are formed of Róisín Nic Ghearailt, Constance Keane, Jamie Hyland, Zoe Greenway and Sean Nolan. Together, the band aim to rattle the male dominated post-punk scene with their urgent, gritty sounds. Their EP "Gender Studies" cements their statement against toxic patriarchal standards.    0:04:09 (Pop-up)
The Menstrual Cramps  Killin Us   Favoriting Free Bleedin'  The Menstrual Cramps  2018  Riot grrrl-inspired, feminist DIY punk band The Menstrual Cramps are on a mission to ‘make girls feel good’ and ‘not take your shit’. Mixing elements of punk, Britney Spears, Spice Girls and a helping of witty humour, vocalist Emilia, guitarist Cooper, bassist Robyn and drummer Beth take their tenacious spirit and ignite the stage with brutally honest lyrics to empower women to break free from the patriarchy and speak their mind. You only need to hear a couple of The Menstrual Cramps songs to understand what their mission is about. With comically direct songs Hashtag Sad Penis, Cull The Tories and Frack Off, it’s clear this band don’t shy away from telling it how it is.    0:06:04 (Pop-up)
Priests  And Breeding   Favoriting Bodies and Control and Money and Power  Don Giovanni Records  2014  Their music—which triangulates turn-of-the-80s Los Angeles, early 90s Olympia, and NYC b-movie-obsessives the Cramps, if that band spent a little less time at the drive-in and a little more time cataloging the horrors on 6 o'clock news—isn't likely to win them many points for originality, or for that matter, subtlety. But, from the first blast of feedback to the flirtation with light treason that closes it out, Bodies doesn't let up for a second; at just 17-and-a-half minutes, it has neither the time nor the patience for fucking around.    0:09:10 (Pop-up)
The Coathangers  Watch Your Back   Favoriting Nosebleed Weekend  Suicide Squeeze  2016  Atlanta’s tireless garage punks The Coathangers have cranked out five full-lengths and well over a dozen singles, splits, and EPs. Considering the band’s initial aspirations to merely hang out and play a few house parties, their relentless touring schedule is perhaps the greatest testament to the lasting power of their scrappy hook-laden records and the infectious energy radiating from their live shows. Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth is a fan, and rightly so.    0:12:23 (Pop-up)
Courtney Barnett  I'm Not Your Mother I'm Not Your Bitch   Favoriting Tell Me How You Really Feel  Mom + Pop  2018  At the center of Tell Me, Barnett gives the listener no choice but to listen when she adopts an unusually ferocious tone across two consecutive songs. “Nameless, Faceless” paraphrases a Margaret Atwood quote for its grungy chorus: “Men are scared that women will laugh at them/Women are scared that men will kill them.” And “I’m Not Your Mother, I’m Not Your Bitch” is a roiling tirade that needs little more explanation beyond its title. They’re both visceral, lunging songs. Pitchfork seems to think neither of these songs "work". Babs say Pitchfork can fuck off, they absolutely do.    0:15:06 (Pop-up)

Dog Faced Hermans  Keep Your Laws / Off My Body   Favoriting Those Deep Buds  Alternative Tentacles   1994  It's very sad to be playing this song again so soon; living in a time when we are going backwards. Rights of individuals are being increasingly threatened and rolled back worldwide, if they ever had any in the first place. As always, Dog Faced Hermans have the correct perspective: "Keep your laws off my body / What I have I'll not return / I will live in no dark ages / But in the light / Clear as glass is my decision / What I have I'll not return / I will fight this territory / It's mine to fight / Mister when you're in the sunshine / And a shadow falls across / Just look up and you will find me / I'm in the light"    0:25:05 (Pop-up)
Penetration  Don't Dictate #2 - Live in Newcastle, October 14th 1979   Favoriting Live 1978-1979  Easy Action  1979 / 2010  "Named after the Stooges song of the same name the band were formed in late 76 in Ferryhill County Durham by three friends Pauline Murray, Robert Blamire and Gary Smallman after seeing the Sex Pistols play in Manchester. They played their first gig in October 76 at the Middlesborough Rock Garden and played their first London gig at the famous Roxy Club in January 77 supporting Gen X. This first gig in the bright lights of London was less than fondly recalled by Pauline “We spent a fortune getting down there. We thought it was great. Then when we got there it was such a dump. I don’t know what we were expecting but it wasn’t quite that .” While singles were coming out a plenty by other acts Penetration, like X Ray Spex and The Rezillos (Siouxsie would have to wait a further year !) had to wait till later in the year to get a recording contract (strangely all women lead bands ! ?). The excellent ‘Don’t Dictate’ was released late ’77"    0:30:32 (Pop-up)
Poison Girls  Ideologically Unsound   Favoriting Hex  Small Wonder  1979  Produced by Crass member Penny Rimbaud & engineered by John Loder w/ additional vocals by Crass vocalist Eve Libertine, the debut release from Poison Girls followed in the same strident political tone. Originally released in 1979, the following year it would be re-issued on Crass Records.    0:33:42 (Pop-up)
OSEES  Perm Act   Favoriting A Foul Form  Castle Face  2022  From Stereogum: "Last month, the ever-prolific John Dwyer announced a brand-new Osees album, A Foul Form, due out on August 12 via Castle Face Records. Along with the news came a lead single, “Funeral Solution.” Now, there’s a follow-up track, “Perm Act,” and it comes with a video directed and animated by John Harlow. Clattering and urgent, “Perm Act” is decidedly anti-cop. As Dwyer tells it: "Who likes a cop? -- Other cops. -- After years of having unpleasant to violent encounters with police, I had the thought that wouldn’t it be fun if they loved each other so much they ate each other…a sort of dark comedy contemporary and executive branch based “a modest proposal.” Problem solved? The violence would hit such a high pitch that they just frenzied like sharks with chum. I saw with my own eyes two of the biggest knuckleheads i grew up with go on to have careers in law enforcement emulating the beatings they regularly took when they would mouth off to a cop. These guys were most definitely not fit for gun ownership, let alone policing others. Good luck out there.""  *   0:36:27 (Pop-up)
Mekons  Born To Choose   Favoriting I Have Been To Heaven And Back: Hen's Teeth and other lost fragments of unpopular culture, Vol. 1  Low Noise / Quarterstick  1993  From one of a couple of similarly titled compilations of alternate versions and lost tracks from the first couple of decades of Leeds band Mekons. This song was recorded at the Stoneroom in West London summer 1992 with Ian Caple for Rykodisc's 1993 Pro-Choice benefit CD Born To Choose. Many sharp, direct lyrics in this one, including: "Control The Body, Control The Mind."    0:40:17 (Pop-up)
The Clash  Armagideon Time   Favoriting The Clash: The Singles (London Calling B-Side)  Columbia  1979  ""Armagideon Time" (spelt as "Armigedeon Time" in some versions) is a song by Jamaican reggae musician Willie Williams" I was surprised to learn that the original version of this B-Side to London Calling was actually released the same year as The Clash's version, 1979. Funny how the lyrical themes of "A lotta people won't get no supper tonight", "A lotta people won't get no justice tonight" and "Battle getting harder" resound as loudly today as ever.    0:45:20 (Pop-up)

I was also surprised to check the liner notes and see that this Clash song was from 1979, as it sounds much more like Sandinista-era 1980's Clash. It certainly points to the transition ahead in that direction, with different wildly dubbed out "versions" of the song.

The Shifters  Left Bereft   Favoriting Left Bereft/Australia Single  Captured Tracks  2020  The Shifters from Melbourne are a prolific lo-fi DIY band that put a post-modernist spin on punk. About "Left Bereft" they say: Well I feel things are a bit different now as these were all written pre-COVID, but still valid as it seems the new federal budget is a welfare package for the bosses of the country and the Liberal party is back on track making the poor suffer. It came about when we returned from our European tour. I made a point throughout the yomp to talk to as many people as possible about what was going on in their respective countries politically and socially. At the end of it all I was left with the impression that everyone felt in a similar way to myself about their own Governments and fracturing communities. ‘Left Bereft’ is an overly simplified rabble-rouser that people who maybe use English as a second or third language can understand and maybe feel a bit of solidarity. I like to imagine drunk students in France listening to it whilst wrestling on the kitchen table, which we witnessed in Rennes, but the soundtrack was ‘Constant Mongrel’.    0:58:55 (Pop-up)
Sextile ft. Sienna  Current Affair   Favoriting Current Affair (Single)  Felte  2018  As a stable fixture in the Los Angeles underground, Sextile has been gaining a devout following since its creation in 2015. The outfit has all the makings of a revolutionary sound — boldly throwing convention out the window to create an entirely original, genre-bending imprint that combines the raw energy of 70’s punk with the intricate and sophisticated structural elements of 80’s post-punk and synthwave. The track features vocals and lyrics written by close friend and Los Angeles native, Sienna Scarritt . Sienna declares, “Lyrically, the song addresses the regression of our (America) nation. It’s a backwards motion, a lapse in front of our eyes—happening fast. The song is a verbal refusal of getting caught in this current of delusion. It’s a plea to the world to wake up.”    1:02:25 (Pop-up)
System Exclusive  Inline Online   Favoriting System Exclusive  Castle Face  2022  Ari Blaisdell and Matt Jones are System Exclusive: a Pasadena based two piece band bearing an armful of mini synths, making heart-throbbing capital P pop cut with more than a hint of post-punk. Blaisdell’s vocals hearken back to openhearted 80’s hitmakers unafraid to quaver in the name of love, and they’re buoyed by Jones’ laser-gridded synth concoctions and heavy hand on the ones and twos.    1:05:17 (Pop-up)
Jimmy Smack  Hating Life   Favoriting Death Is Certain (Comp)  Knekelhuis  2022  While his local punk contemporaries pursued aggressive hardcore and political punk, Jimmy Smack donned corpse paint (before it would later become synonymous with the European black metal movement) and found a home performing in venues like the Anti-Club, amongst other subterranean dwellers Christian Death, Dead Hippie and 45 Grave. Even within this lurid milieu, Jimmy Smack stood alone. Hating Life (from Death Rocks) easily locates Jimmy within the negative-punk and KBD lexicon. However his recordings, consisting of voice, rhythm box and electrified bagpipe drones, otherwise veer closer to other-worldly avant-garde rituals. Jimmy’s background in theatre and performance art helping inform not only his menacing stage presence, but also spawning the singularity of his sound.    1:08:53 (Pop-up)

Subhumans  Oh Canaduh   Favoriting Death Was Too Kind  Alternative Tentacles   1978 / 2008  Originally released Dec 1978 as a B-Side to the "Death To The Sickoids" single. "In Vancouver Canada’s long and glorious history of punk rock, few bands were more punk, or more rockin’ than the Subhumans. Subhumans gigs were a riot, sometimes literally; years later, their records still seethe with raw power. The Subhumans were angry and hilarious, often simultaneously, the living embodiment of everything that was great about punk rock circa 1978-82. The band formed in the spring of 1978. Their first show was at an “anti-Canada Day” celebration, sponsored by anarchists, on July 1st. The band’s line-up consisted of Brian Goble (a.k.a. “Wimpy-Roy”) on vocals, Ken Montgomery (a.k.a. “Dimwit”) on drums, Gerry Hannah (a.k.a. “Gerry Useless”) on bass and Mike Graham on guitar."    1:22:30 (Pop-up)
Ohmno  Braindead In The USA   Favoriting Muscles For President  Self-Released (Bandcamp)  2022  Released April 1, 2022. "We started this record in the summer of 2020. Locked up at home under COVID restrictions there was nothing to do but watch chaos unfold in the outside world and recede further into ourselves than previously thought possible. With eyes forced wide open we witnessed a ghouls gone wild presidential campaign alongside a numbing steady stream of racially motivated police killings. Alex P Keaton had joined the Manson Family. His shaved head and third eye swastika tattoo gave rise to a dark shadow beast of the American Dream. The visceral hatred and annihilistic anger feeding a monster whose only goal was self-consumption followed by self-immolation. The contrast from the cartoon patriotism of our youth, Springsteen and the flag, Hulk Hogan the hero of the children and the horrific downfall of our formerly beloved TV father Bill Cosby provide no other narrative other than we were now living in the American Nightmare. Muscles for President is a reflection of being stuck inside this upside down version of reality; a Born in the USA on acid. It features recurring themes of existence in slow decay, apathy at the apocalypse, derealisation, and the violent shooting death of Detroit indie legend David “Muscles” Stroughter at the hands of the LAPD in 2017." Ohmno Bandcamp  *   1:24:45 (Pop-up)
The Saints  Orstralia   Favoriting Eternally Yours  Harvest / Sire  1978  "Chris Bailey, an Australian singer who with his band, the Saints, introduced their country to the raw, fast-tempo sounds of punk rock in the mid-1970s, just as the Sex Pistols were spiking their hair in London and the Ramones were donning their leather jackets in New York City, died on April 9 [2022] in Haarlem, the Netherlands. He was 65... ...Mr. Bailey and the Saints did not borrow from the sounds emanating out of Britain and the United States. Rather, in a case of parallel evolution, they emerged simultaneously, shaped in their native Brisbane by some of the same forces at work in the Northern Hemisphere: high unemployment, stifling social conservatism and grungy political radicalism."    1:27:44 (Pop-up)
Legendary Pink Dots  Cruel Britannia   Favoriting The Museum Of Human Happiness  Metropolis Records  2022  Some words from founder Edward Ka-Spel: "Song writing and recording were necessarily deemed to happen in cyberspace for the rest of 2020 and 2021. As a result, the lyrics are utterly poignant, desperate, yet sometimes bearing a flash of gallows humour. The soundtrack is a purging fire. It’s a fire that still burns, and as I type this I can say I have never been so excited about the impending release of a new Dots’ album. Never mind the distance, there is a single-mindedness about “The Museum Of Human Happiness.” It’s 2022. We’ll meet again….EK" Legendary Pink Dots Bandcamp (Staggering discography!)  *   1:30:11 (Pop-up)
Tom Zé  Hy-Brasil Terra Sem Mal   Favoriting Língua Brasileira  Selo Sesc  2022  [Translates to "Hy Brazil Land Without Evil", which would be good to find. "The repertoire reflects the composer's research. Hy-Brasil Terra Sem Mal , the song that opens the album, is, as the promotional text explains, "inspired by the Tupi-Guarani belief of Terra Sem Mal and the mythological island that appears in Celtic culture, called Hy-Brasil: a portion of land named after the Atlantic Ocean that would spend cyclical periods of seven years hidden under thick fog, revealing itself to the eyes of navigators for a single day, but always remaining unreachable by vessels"."  *   1:34:46 (Pop-up)
Ukrainian National Anthem In Dub  Ukrainian National Anthem In Dub   Favoriting Jah Wobble & The Ukrainians (featuring Jon Klein)  Bandcamp  2022  Released April 22, 2022. Jah Wobble (Original bassist for Public Image Limited), John Klein (once with Siouxsie and the Banshees) join up with members of The Ukranians (Peter Solowka's project after he parted ways with The Wedding Present.) "A brand new interpretation of the Ukrainian National Anthem by Jah Wobble and Jon Klein with special guests, released to benefit the DEC (Disasters Emergency Committee) Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal www.dec.org.uk/appeal/ukraine-humanitarian-appeal and the AUGB (Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain) Help Ukraine Emergency Appeal www.augb.co.uk Also visit: www.gofundme.com/f/helpukraine All proceeds from the song will be donated to these organisations." Algebra Suicide  An Explanation For That Flock Of Crows   Favoriting An Explanation For That Flock of Crows (7")  Dark Entries  1985  Starting in Chicago, Illinois, Algebra Suicide were active from 1982 to 1994. The combination of Lydia Tomkiw's poetry mostly presented with in deadpan voice and Don Hedeker's minimal post-punk-influenced guitar with added drum machine and keyboard sequencing won them more critical praise than commercial success. They toured Europe twice with added slide projections on stage, networked with many artists and underground tape labels on through the 80's, achieved some awards, ran a now-defunct home page run by Clive Barker of Hellraiser fame, published poetry, and ran Chicago's Link Hall Club.    1:48:59 (Pop-up)
Nancy Cesay & The Melodaires  C'est Fab   Favoriting (cease and desist) DIY! cult classics from the post-punk era ( 1978-82)  Optimo Music  2015  "C'est Fab", a 1982 single credited to Nancy Sesay and the Melodaires—a Homosexuals-related group never heard from before or since—justifies this compilation's existence all by itself. It's a struggle for supremacy between a rhythm section that's trying to play crisp, bouncy funk and musicians who are doing their utmost to derail it (a singer squeaking uncertainly and out of tune at the very top of her range, an out-of-control trumpeter streaking through the studio, a male chorus with comedy accents, somebody dropping in cascades of fist-hammered dub piano). Everybody ends up winning.    1:51:43 (Pop-up)
Meridian Brothers y Grupo Renacimiento  Triste Son   Favoriting Triste Son (Single)  Ansonia Records  2022  Bogota's the Meridian Brothers are the creation of Eblis Álvarez, who writes, arranges, produces, plays, and sings everything on their recordings, though when the band plays live he is aided by other musicians. Their music is almost unclassifiable, a bracing meld of electronic and organic instruments, influenced by Latin rock, psychedelia, Frank Zappa, The Residents, modern vanguard electronic music, and South American and Caribbean folk traditions and rhythms.

Yoko Ono  Angry Young Woman   Favoriting Feeling The Space  Apple Records  1973  Feeling the Space was recorded during the time when the avant-garde visionary artist became estranged from her rock-star husband John Lennon. He plays only briefly on the album (billed as ‘Johnny O’cean’); she produced and wrote all the songs. ostly, Yoko’s pain and vulnerability, and also her declaration of independence, are communicated simply and gingerly, as if she were still sorting out very strong emotions that needed clear expression, not, this time, the purging power of a wail. Dedicated ‘to the sisters who died in pain and sorrow and those who are now in prisons and in mental hospitals for being unable to survive in the male society’, it’s an emotional exploration of the psychological toll of oppression.    2:02:59 (Pop-up)

Mr Fab:

Men are speaking out because it effects us all - more babies means more poverty from those who can't afford to have kids (which is why they wanted an abortion in the first place), and more poverty means more crime. It has a ripple effect thru out all of society.

As 'Freakonomics' pointed out, the crime rate dropped down like a roller coaster after the passing of Roe v Wade.

Sometimes my science side comes out. Class dismissed!
