I heard The Marble Index for the first time a couple months back 'cause of a Dangerous Minds post. Picked up a used CD copy at Amoeba last week. Phenomenal. Then listened to Desertshore online. And yesterday listened to Drama of Exile, which is a trip
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm

Oh, I haven't heard Drama of Exile or Desertshore. I've heard some of The Marble Index, but not the whole album. We'll be hearing from a late album, maybe her last one?

Cool - I think Camera Obscura is the last one. I haven't heard that one, so I'm looking forward! Can't believe it took me this long to dig into her stuff. I was listening to the Velvets in high school. I guess all it took was a good review and streaming audio on the internet :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm

Yeah, I love what I've heard of her so far, but like you, I've only recently begun to listen. I think it was Julian Cope in Copendium that got me to seek her out

I know, but I *do* want to figure out a way to play records tapes & CDs live -- the problem is, an all-vinyl show would mean two turntables, and there is no room here for that :(

today i ate in a place i'd heard had excellent veggieburgers (they do!) it's called "B-side grill" (and french fries as good as anywhere)
and the walls and ceiling are covered with records (presumably all with side b facing out)
i only read maybe 10 labels but just with that saw some that someone would love to have, and would sell for a nice chunk of change. most of them looked in good condition.
then i saw that the 6" moulding along the ceiling was covered with cassettes. (but i guess those are not in good shape after 5-6 years of changing temperatures, airborne kitchen grease and occasional cleaning solutions.

All-vinyl in no way requires two turntables. So much of the pleasure and habit of playing vinyl is in the silent interstices.

Coel --Those ceiling tapes might sound good for an experimental WFMU show, muffled tape treasures.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm

Dean with the contrary take! Yeah, I've considered doing just that, and I remember loving Mac's show way back when, which was nothing but that (with 78s)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm

I would, however, at least for my own sanity, need to get a mic stand to free my hands
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm

i'd like to have 4 turntables, just for practical reasons...
1 for good-condition stereo 33 and 45 rpms;
1 for mono good-condition 33s and 45s;
1 for 78s;
and 1 for shit-condition records.
but i barely have space for one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm
Gary:

You could do different cartridges, Ceolacanth! I have one cartridge for great-to-good-shape records and one for not-good-to-poor condition records. Thinking about possibly getting a mono cartridge. Not sure if I am ready to go down the 78 rabbit hole yet

ngh if there was a way to swap out cartridges quickly i'd do it.
i have 3 functional cartridges but when i know i'm about to play an old beat to hell record i really don't feel like swapping out cartridges -even though i know i shouldn't play good records with the same stylus as that used on the scratched-up ones.
2 tricky screws/nuts/washers, 4 very delicate wires, alignment, balance/counterweight, skating adjustment.
