For what it's worth, I have always heard it as "the sooner de betta" (not "the betta"), and took it to be a kind of play on words -- or rather play on sounds -- on "deliver": DE-liver, DE-letta, DE-betta. But that's probably just me.

tim from washington - if you've already played Bass you're mostly there. Learn the scale in E (think Spanish 'Malaquena') & then the fretboard makes a lot more sense. Learn Chords E - then A - you can move those around for Barre Chords & yer Ramones-ready. Then learn the other Letters. Then fiddle a few Lead riffs til they're muscle memory.
Why not ??
