Much like our very own, "Will A Sound Man," the tag line says, "The Star of Paramount Pictures," but realistically, he is, "A Star of Paramount Pictures."

So it goes.

Ooh that notorious "other side of the tracks"
  6:03pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Haha you're great at it
  6:04pm
Ellen Lovebug:

I didn't really believe there would be that much change in social class just by a railroad track bisecting a neighborhood until I moved to the north end of the Whit after years at the Icky's end of the Blair district
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:05pm
Austin Rich:

Much like the "other side of the tracks" trope, shows like Box 13 were often these tropes before they were "over-used." I'm sure a lot of people who were rich enough to own radios didn't realize there was a wrong side of the tracks to be on... because on that side, you wouldn't hear about it on the radio.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:05pm
Austin Rich:

... often using these tropes...

Ellen Lovebug:

Fascinating. Wow this kid is rude and the slang seems false in his obnoxious voice
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:08pm
Austin Rich:

In all of the previous episodes, we've been accumulating evidence that Dan Holiday has been exposed to a lot of "hardened" street crime, but he himself is sort of a fuddy duddy. This episode really lays it on the line: "I don't go against the law."

Dan hasn't yet learned about #ACAB.
  6:09pm
Ellen Lovebug:

He has circumvented law enforcement in episodes, gone against their warnings
  6:10pm

I'd be charmed lol

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:10pm
Austin Rich:

He has... but usually, with Kling sort of backing him up in the end, even after a warning. Almost like they have to go through the motions before they can do it "unofficially."

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:13pm
Austin Rich:

One hallmark of "hardboiled conversation" that seems to carry over in a lot of media is a sort of "homoerotic subtext" to so many interactions. There's a lot of, "Thanks lover," and, "don't treat me rough," kinds of conversation, that sort of speaks to the tension of beautiful, tough men all working together often. I'm sure there's a few papers in there that I could write.
  6:13pm
Ellen Lovebug:

He's basically admitting he's innocent here
  6:13pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Absolutely. So. Much. Subtext. It's fun
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:14pm
Austin Rich:

That's why I think you are right about the interpretation of Biff (the slang doesn't work right). That's a character trait, not a mistake. The writers are good enough to know better, but wrote Biff a little "dim." It's very well done.

  6:18pm
Ellen Lovebug:

In a vise, great diction. I love that since Dan is an author, the writers don't have to mince words, they can break out the thesaurus for him
  6:18pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Ellen Lovebug:

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:21pm
Austin Rich:

If you like the dialog in this show, I love watching, "Millers Crossing," for that same reason. The dialog in that movie is sort of on the same level as other noir-type stories, and it's a great movie, too.

But I mostly love listening to the way people talk in that movie.
  6:22pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Thanks for the tip!
  6:23pm
Listener Robert:

I wonder how much of the audience then laughed along with me now at that line about when kids would learn what's obviously untrue about the police.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:24pm
Austin Rich:

I was just thinking about that, Listener Robert.
  6:24pm
Listener Robert:

An individual policeman can be your friend. "The police", never.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:24pm
Austin Rich:

I think most adults listening knew that was a joke. (Or, at least, untrue.)
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:27pm
Austin Rich:

In a way, detective / noir fiction is all based on the notion that the police are incompetent, and a real "hero" is needed to get to the bottom of things. Having police say lines like that can't be taken seriously, when Dan keeps saving the day.
  6:27pm
Listener Robert:

But it wouldn't surprise me if those involved in the making and airing of the show needed to score those points with the authorities. Like what came out a few decades ago about the consideration TV stations, networks, and producers received in trade for writing favorably about the government.
  6:28pm
Listener Robert:

What you wrote at 6:27 is true. Notice how the police and thugs talk exactly the same.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:29pm

Of course Suzy likes the idea of being alone in the dark with a man. Oh that Suzy!

Avatar 6:30pm
Charles:

That was great!
Later Ellen!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:31pm
Austin Rich:

What I find fascinating about radio and more "pop culture" presentations of noir stories is that, in the end, the police "execute" the law that the detective gets to the bottom of. So on radio, the police are more functionaries, than "cops."
Avatar 6:31pm
Charles:

Merry christmas!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:32pm
Austin Rich:

So, this is the the "Christmas" episode of the "The Voyage of The Scarlet Queen," and of course, they spend it on Christmas Island. Hilarity ensues...
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:33pm
Austin Rich:

Certainly, anyone listening to this show on Christmas Eve in 1947 was probably expecting some holiday content from the radio. I suspect this idea (Christmas on Christmas Island) was in the works from very near the beginning.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:35pm
Austin Rich:

Not the worst sound this week, but I did a little EQ to help reduce the background hiss and up the mids. It doesn't sound as good as other episodes, but it's certainly better that some of the others.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:36pm
Austin Rich:

I realize I should have promoted this episodes as, "Christmas In July on Dimestore Radio Theater."
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:38pm
Austin Rich:

Another encounter with Neilson, and this time, with a fair amount of dialog!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:40pm
Austin Rich:

There was another character earlier that was sort of screaming, and it was unclear who that might be. So: still no new names of the other crew members. Yet.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:45pm
Austin Rich:

We are in the end-run of our "Scarlet Queen" presentation. There's 10 more "proper" episodes, and then two "Pilot" recordings. (One, a different version of a story we've already heard, and another, with an imagined new version of the show, set in the late 50's. We'll run those after the primary episodes, and #37 will the the last time we'll get to enjoy Voyages on The Scarlet Queen.

Avatar 6:56pm
Charles:

You're giving us a lot to think about, Christmas special of the Voyage of the Scarlet Queen!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:56pm
Austin Rich:

I just realized that they referenced a "Cook" on the ship, which they haven't really made any references to in the past. That leaves four crew members "referenced" early on, but not directly referenced in the show anywhere so far.

So our crew is, so far:

Phil Carney - Captain
Red Gallagher - First Mate
Neilson - Crewmember
Four - Cook.
Five
Six
Seven.
Eight.
  6:57pm
Listener Robert:

So there's a New Year's Eve show coming.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:58pm

I think the show has depicted both Red and Gallagher yelling in these "before and after" bits of the show, so I haven't decided who it actually is, yet.

Don Joyce ran a very good series of his program, "Over The Edge," called, "How Radio Was Done," and he does a in-depth re-presentation of old radio recordings, in chronological order. Each episode is between three and five hours long, and there's over 100 episodes. Lots of amazing raw recordings of old radio broadcasts.

The first four episodes cover up to WWII, and have the "oldest" radio recordings. (And some stuff about the development of the technology.) The pace of the show slows way down very quickly, as there is more stuff covering the 50's and 60's that's been archived.

You can really hear the crackle from the transcription disc that this recording came from. I thought about running click removal on the recording (I already did a fair amount of EQ and editing to help improve the sound for this one), but when I tried to do the click removal, it just mangled the sound badly. So a little noise comes with the territory.

Interesting possibilities regarding the cause of an Elmer Fudd voice. Did you hear Dave Emory before and after his surgery? And then slowly getting back toward normal over the years.

Andy Breckman had surgery on his throat too, but not as severe consequences or reason.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:47pm

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:50pm
Austin Rich:

Hearing the thoughts of Martians in his head... and how he had always heard them, even when he was younger... I've wondered if that bit had an influence on Joe Dante's, "Explorers," which sort of has a bit in there about the kids (and kids of previous generations) getting dream-messages from aliens.
