greetings, Gaylord! Fields Fans!
just tuning in, ahhhh this John Cale :)
away from the accu more than i would like -- but so grateful to be here and listening with you all <3 <3 <3
@Gaylord this is one of the rare times I don’t have family things tonight, usually listen to you on the archives
Howdy slugluv and boo boring tedious chores
@ Robm : SellOut is TheWho's 1967 album - so, their 'Sgt.Pepper' if you will. That family of albums with Odyssey & Oracle & PetSounds ('66) & ForeverChanges & Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Or, simply, their Psychedelic album. The last before Tommy - which many see as a real line of demarcation between the Mod Early Who & Later. & certain musical motifs are recycled into Tommy. It's around the concept of being one long pastiche of Pirate Radio - early 1960s Pop culture & a wistful review of it on the eve of its immanent demise. & also a bunch of Songs & vignettes as Commercials.
@Revolution Rabbit Nov63: And if you throw in 1968's The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society, you have many of my fave rave LPs right there!
@GF - Village Green def in there - tho not released until late Nov.'68 - same day in fact as the White Album ! Course - as you've noted - TheKinks had about as indispensable a run of albums as anybody. So there's Face to Face in there ('66?) ferexample...
...'Something Else' released in Summer of Love : en.wikipedia.org...
- not actually their strongest. BUT - anything with WaterlooSunset gets a Crown anyhow...
@Robm: Course thing with TheKinks in the 1960s is they got banned by the Union from touring in the USA cause of disorderly behavior & resentments ! They were barely housetrained first go round... This is regarded as in another sense perfect - as they remained quintessentially British.
@B R M: More than I've paid for some cars I've owned.

I've listened to a bit of 90s pop records lately, here and there, and it occurred to me that I don't think I've heard very many recent records with samples of movies or whatever. And, honestly, I don't know if very many people are doing things like that anymore.
Gene Rains is a vibraphonist and leader of the Gene Rains Group, a jazz quartet from Hawaii that played a musical style known as Exotica. Rains' short career spanned the early to the mid-1960s en.wikipedia.org...
Tonight at Farm Fest, the closing act, Southern Steel, solicited requests for their closing number. Of course audience members yelled for Free Bird. They played it, with all the bells and whistles.
I don't know if that's the only example lately where it's been done unironically. It's probably because the audience was mpstly much older than the performers.
