A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

univac is, among many other things, a circuit bender, a video producer, and a musician. For more information:

When ramencitykid shows up, you know it's a good time.

Austin Rich:

univac and I have our "dialog" slightly out of sync in their early episode. We were trying out a variety of different digital techniques to be in the "same" room for these kinds of performances. This was an early one, where we hadn't quite mastered it. Later episodes, our dialog is less... wild.

dAs & Ninah have a weekly show on DFM.nu... a streaming station that has roots that go back to a terrestrial station from the 60's, out of Amsterdam. We join them once a month to do stuff like this.

Kat in Chicago:

I like these musics
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:21pm
Austin Rich:

univac and I send our signals from our studios to their studio, and they mix our signals into their broadcasts. So often univac and I don't really know what the final product sounds like until after the show airs. (We can hear stuff via monitors and whatnot... but again... distance delays and whatnot make it complicated, but we manage.)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:22pm
Austin Rich:

In total, there are four different studios involved at four different locations before listeners hear these sounds.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:23pm
Austin Rich:

In this first installment, the "gimmick" was that univac and I are meeting in person in his spacecraft to jam. The premise gets more complicated as the shows go on...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:27pm
Austin Rich:

These shows go on for two hours. About 20 mintues of each show is for "intermission" content. We usually jam for at least a full hour, total, between the two sets we usually do each show. And then there's the scripted and improvised dialog bits. I've had to cut a lot to squeeze all of these into these shows here.

If you like the music, you're hearing only an excerpt here. There's more, and longer excerpts, here:

Mr. X:

I love the funny space schtick!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:30pm
Austin Rich:

Usually what happens: we have a call a few weeks before each show, and we discuss ideas for what gags we want to do.

Then we start a Google Doc. univac and I will start writing, giving each other chances to revise each other's bits.

We'll use the scripts on the day of the show, but we also improvise, change almost everything at the last minute, and make it as difficult for each other as possible.

Heather can speak to the inner workings of how we make these.
  9:33pm
Heather:

It's a lot of fun to be on the show and everyone except myself did a ton of work to prepare for the last one! I just zoomed in, no signal to send from my humble home studio, but it seemed to mostly work. I'm not sure which the biggest challenge was: reading longer blocks of script than I'm used to, more slowly than I'm used to or trying to improv and quickly realize I know nothing of workouts nor cooking!
Avatar 9:34pm
HyperDose:

This is quite the immersive experience

Kat in Chicago:

My compliments to the interior decorator of the space loft
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:42pm
Austin Rich:

I can't remember where I found that image. We each take turns having to design the fliers for the shows, and I got the Space Loft one. Ninah added the images of us in space suits.

The 1,000,001 Bongo Band was inspired by my love of the name 101 Strings Orchestra.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:47pm
Kat in Chicago:

that's a lotta bongos
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:48pm
Austin Rich:

Ninah came to us and said, "you two should visit the Space Loft in the next episode," and we sort of came up with what that meant.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:49pm
Austin Rich:

We take turns designing different SFX and stuff for the show. It sort of depends on what we need for each show.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:52pm
Austin Rich:

One of our dark secrets: they aren't all bongos.

Mr Fab:

Hey Austin and fellow space-cases! Been listening on and off while doin stuff. Just gotta say: THIS is creative radio.
Avatar 9:54pm
Mr. X:

Any ideas on what the audience demographics might be for this show? Do the people of Amsterdam take a particular interest in it?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:55pm
Austin Rich:

I have no idea about that, actually. I think DFM is now largely streaming, so the audience is sort of like WFMU: it's sort of destination listening.

Ninah has a chat going, but univac and I are usually too busy reading and performing to get in the chat.

Mr. Fab! Nice to see you in the chat!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:56pm
Austin Rich:

I can't remember what band exactly, but dAs found some Prog Rock band and "mangled" a live recording for the Panspermia performance.

This is how I imagine Disaster Area, from Hitchhiker's Guide, would sound.

When I played one of my first noise festivals, with bands from all over the world, there were these huge guys, in shorts, playing shirtless, and it was really confrontational harsh noise, and the way they interacted with each other, I turned to my bandmate and said, "Ah. Noise Bros. I'll be outside."

Mr. X:

Why is space so funny to me?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
Austin Rich:

I think, because of the sync issues, you can only just barely hear that I introduce myself as "Vic Sputnik," which is a name I've used a few times on other shows and stuff.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Austin Rich:

I'm obsessed with outer space stuff, too. You set almost any story on a spaceship or on another planet, and I'm totally interested.

Red Dwarf will always be more funny to me than The Odd Couple. (Though, The Odd Couple is pretty good.)
Avatar 10:44pm
HyperDose:

Same here Austin. Space is beautiful yet so deadly

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:48pm

I had an idea for a future show, where The Renaissance Iguanas have an album release party, and you get to know their members more. Still need to write that script.

Ahhh I am?! That's so exciting!! But yes and I'm sorry. Nigel really never answers his phone. He just uses my credit card on it to place Chewy orders.
