The Dead had 2 (arguably 3) great studio albums in their entire career: Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and From the Mars Hotel. The rest were either mediocre, bad or really bad.

Avatar 10:06pm
PuraVida:

The Dead did 2 things that the Allmans did not & it doomed the Allmans in the long run. They taped every show themselves & they started allowing fans to tape their shows. Thus setting up vast archives of all of their shows.

Gary:

I agree Dean

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm

GD studio efforts get a bad rap. lots of cool psychedelia on the early records, as Dean suggests. also wake of the flood is a great record!

I really like a lot of the Dead stuff (particularly the live stuff) but Bob Weir was such an obvious weak link. Didn’t they come very close to firing him on at least one occasion in the early days.

This problem of retention of cultural moments and artifacts, such as live shows, is just one issue with what Cliff Lynch refers to as "stewardship in the age of algorithms." It's only getting harder these days. As PuraVida points out, the Dead anticipated this issue (way before "algorithm" meant something to most of us), and I hope others will take measures. But ultimately it's going to require carefully coordinated measures.
