Favoriting Discotech Underground with Kip Brown: Playlist from August 11, 2022 Favoriting

Discotech Underground is actually two...two...two shows in one!

The first half is a "Happy Hour" of sorts (because it's five o'clock somewhere, right?), spinning the kinds of sounds you might have heard at a real, authentic 1960's DISCOTECH as cool cats and swingin' chicks danced the night away in their mod threads and mini skirts to hard-driving sounds under the flashing lights! The only thing missing are the cage dancers...but we're working on it!

The second half is for when you head home after a wild night, and ease in with the heady, trippy, mind-expanding sounds of a groovy free-form UNDERGROUND rock radio station that digs deep into their library and blows your mind all over again!

HyperDose:

What I love about Kip's show is that he really helps me "get" artists. Didn't get Hendrix until I heard him in another capacity covering Van Morrison's Gloria. Hazey Jane is the first Nick Drake track I really enjoyed.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Discotech Underground:

Always happy to help bridge the gaps, Hyperdose! Sometimes you just need the right song at the right time for something to make sense.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Discotech Underground:

Honestly, the best Nick Drake primer is the US album with the yellow cover that picks up the best tracks from his first two albums. They did a Record Store Day reprint of it just a couple of years back so it should be available fairly easily.
Avatar 10:54pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Raised on Hendrix. Yeah frustrating people only know a few Hits - but that's how the culture goes. Dealt with that specifically in his short life in fact.
NickDrake I actually feared - because I knew he was sublime & most excellent - but he succumbed to his depression. & I can actually drown in such waters. There's only like four albums & the addendums as it turns out anyhow...

I remember reading a lengthy article about Drake in Spin magazine in the mid 1980's around the time the Fruit Tree box set was released. It was very intriguing but I never got around to actually exploring his music until many years later. I am glad I finally dod.

The one time I saw Zappa live in concert he did an amazing guitar solo during this song! I remember catching myself staring with my mouth hanging open, I was just that awestruck by it.
Avatar 11:09pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Oh - love to read that ! Wouldn't I ?
Oh yeah - the gittar alone. The cynicism can drive me away - then the humor & just plain musicianship being me back. His bands & works were like nothing else, really.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
Discotech Underground:

This was also my "gateway" album into the world of Zappa. Supposedly that's Gail Zappa doing the shrieks and groans on this track.
Avatar 11:11pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Mahavishnu Orchestra on acid & laughing gas ...no use describing it. There's a good YouTube of a 'Classical guy' watching the Mothers for the first time. Color him impressed...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:12pm

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:13pm

There are a number of "reaction" videos on You Tube of people hearing Zappa for the first time, often "Inca Roads" is the chosen track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm

for some reason, this is putting me in a maggot brain headspace....(it's a good comfy space).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:14pm

One thing people have said that is distressing about this song is they can't tell if the the screams and groans are of pain or pleasure....

Kipster! I saw that Zappa band(Zoot Allures) on New Years Eve 1975. I never saw him again.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:24pm
Discotech Underground:

Franco! I saw him fall of 1980, first tour with Steve Vai at Notre Dame University, the show where the events that inspired the song "Stevie's Spanking" allegedly took place! I never saw him again after that, much to my regret.
Avatar 11:25pm

@Rev Rabbit:....oh, the album! ;p
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm
coelacanth∅:

i like the move okay but don't think they were exceptional at all.
i like this song a lot.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:30pm
Discotech Underground:

I am not a big fan of the late 60's music hall revival sound on songs like "Blackberry Way". That sort of loping beat sounds monotonous after a while. I love songs like Fire Brigade, I Can Hear The Grass Grow and Walk Upon The Water, as well as much of "Shazam" and "Do Ya".
Avatar 11:30pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah - so many bands that stand out in other ways - TheMove seemed to be trying too hard or something. Bob explained that Management may have been @ fault - trying on too many images. But take that track for instance : fantastic vocal harmonies - great playing - song choice - interesting & well-executed arrangement ...the better stuff has those going on.
