Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Hello there, darlings!

Could we reframe this show as Acid Jazz Hands with Bronwyn Bishop and Her Rhythm? The listeners will be the rhythm.
🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:04pm
WR:

I got rhythm!
Avatar 🎭 7:09pm
Listener Gregory:

I actually heard Teddy Wilson live once, when I was in college. It was a nice concert, but not earth-shattering by any means.
🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:09pm
WR:

I bought a 25 CD set of Waller and it is too daunting to know how to start listening to it. So I just look when I hear a track on WFMU and see if I can go, yep I got that already.

Trying to convince myself to be happy with what WFMU streams to me and not amass future thrift shop buys for someone I don't know.

Hey all, cooking and listening!
Avatar 🎭 7:11pm
Listener Gregory:

@WR, Fats is so good that you can just randomly put on a disc and really enjoy it.

@doctorj, reheating leftovers and listening!

I'm so hungry that I'm assembling my new home office chair. Yeah, it doesn't make any sense to me either.

HELLO DARLINGS!!!!!

@WR, when you can't find a dowel or something, you will know what happened to it.
Avatar 7:28pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Sorry guys, technical difficulties stemming from using a different media player than I usually do *facepalm*
🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:29pm
WR:

Thanks for letting us know it was your mistake, not some unknown "technical difficulty ".
Avatar 7:30pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

that's my secret...all the technical difficulties are my fault, because I'm the only one in here ;)
Avatar 🎭 7:32pm
Listener Gregory:

My media player is on injured reserve for two weeks—at least.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm
doctorjazz:

Fats'recordings were all 78s, basically singles, so an album now is just a collection of singles. When they came out folks would listen to one 78 at a time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm
doctorjazz:

WR, don't eat the chair!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm

4 minutes and my grilled fish should be done (grilled chicken, grilled veggies, baked potato already done). Surprise guest, daughter's friend showed up.

I took a field trip to Bethlehem Steel in elementary school, and it was one of the most awesome things I have ever seen (literal meaning of awe here). Even many feet away at an observation point, the heat from the oven was incredible.
Avatar 7:47pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@doctorjazz: sounds delicious!
Avatar 7:48pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: Growing up for us it was always "the old abandoned steel mill..." and then it became an arts center! I saw many great free shows in front of the blast furnace, like Shonen Knife. It's pretty amazing to see a show with the giant blast furnace rising above the band

chair assembled. Not ready to try sitting on it yet. Great interview !!!
🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:01pm
WR:

That was swell. Next time you can interview him about working with Lee Grant, her documentaries and his Honduras documentary.
Avatar 🎭 8:07pm

BB, was this song (O Amor) originally from a musical?
🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:19pm
WR:

I knew Crowe has done pop music, didn't know he wanted to be like Marlon Brando.
Avatar 🎭 8:20pm

This Russell Crowe song is barely a song! Very interesting to hear, though.

Sparks? I've neglected listening to the 2nd half of their career.

Strangely, the chair is assembled, but I'm still hungry. That was Buti with the vocal and guitar? It was beautiful.

He actually came with his own food, for him and my daughter (chicken schwarma and fries). He was a bit exhausting at the dinner table, though..

I liked that Haydn piece, BB. He's no Fats Waller, but still talented in his own way.

so mystified by the lyric "my lean baby is tall and thin/FIVE FEET SEVEN of bones and skin." what??? apparently my 5'7" ass is not only tall for a woman but tall for a man in 1953
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm

We have been getting taller. She doesn't say he's tall, though, just skinny.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm

(It does say he's tall, doesn't it, never mind...)
Avatar 🎭 9:00pm
Listener Gregory:

As the old blues song says, "my Bronwyn's so tall... sleeps in the kitchen with her feets in the hall."
I recognized Tiny Tim! Boy that's a voice I haven't heard in forever.
Great show, Bronwyn. Thanks a lot.
🎭 Swag For Life Member 9:00pm
WR:

The enjoyment of the Haydn piece was heightened by the Bono bombast that came before. That tango piece was wonderful too. La Paloma is a Mexican standard, don't know if any relation the Palomita Blanca.

Oh, oh, Tiny Tim reminds me, Bronwyn, would like to recommend to you this new show in the Sheena stream.

wfmu.org...

Take a look, take a listen.
Avatar 🎭 9:01pm

I got Tiny Tim's first album and pretty much wore it out. I thereby learned a dozen old, old songs that I never would have been exposed to.
🎭 Swag For Life Member 9:03pm
WR:

Thank you Bronwyn!

I love Tiny Tim, in small doses.

Carmen Miranda! sometimes the stream segues nicely in or out of hosted programming.
