Painting with a broad brush, I am not a fan of Brazilian music. But Villa-Lobos is a gaping exception. His piano concertos are glorious. His guitar music sparkles.

Villa-Lobos was a genius! This "Little Train of the Caipira" is a very evocative piece. Sounds like a train coming to a stop!

When I was younger, Rick and Levon were my favorite voices in The Band. As I’ve gotten older and dealt with life and its heartaches, Richard is the one.

This song from the first Band album inspired David Clayton-Thomas and Blood, Sweat and Tears to give it a try on their ultra-successful second LP. But I still prefer the Band's original.

Brian Jones on recorder. Versatile guy. Remember his playing it rather "provocatively" on the Ed Sullivan Show when Ed wouldn't let Mick sing "Let's Spend the Night Together?" 60s censorship that extended to Jim Morrison's defiantly singing the real lyrics to "Light My Fire." The Doors' first and last appearance on that show.

Wow! Only Aretha and her highly-skilled and stellar back-up singers could have pulled that song off! "Daydreamin'" is one super difficult tune to sing. I love to sing along when the inspiration hits me, but that number must have required quite a lot of rehearsal and multiple takes before getting the final version. Congrats, ladies! Magnificent!

A few classmates and I tackled "Alla en el rancho grande" for a school recital when I was in 6th grade. Not a Hispanic kid in the bunch! But our music teacher, Mrs. Hansen, guided us through the musical and linguistic pitfalls of said tune. My big thrill was getting to wear a giant Mexican sombrero. OLE!!

Wasn't "The Straight Story" a movie about some guy who drove his lawn mower or some such vehicle over a great distance? When I saw composer Angelo Badalanenti's name, I immediately thought of director David Lynch, who I think made that film.

Hi gang. Just a quick programming note. Jesse Kaminsky is unable to provide his scheduled fill-in for Dave Sewelson and Music For a Free World today, so... there will be no live show following Bob until 5pm (ET) with Gina Bacon and Someday Matinee, live from Nashville.

If you're puttering about in hopes of a good listen, allow me to recommend you check out Dave Sewelson's show with jaimie branch from October 2019. It was an amazing show. jaimie was an breathtaking trumpeter and creative force in the universe. She died last week at the age of 39.

Here is that show with jaimie branch: wfmu.org...

I recently read Kim Gordon’s autobiography (Sonic Youth) and found it interesting that she listens to Buffalo Springfield a lot when she’s at home chilling. Kind of surprising.

Bob you said on Get That Gasoline Blues both Steve Ferguson & Big Al played solos. Who played the first & who played the second solo? I missed what you said. Thanks Bob.

El Rancho Grande caused a small riot at my hometown's first ( and only ) Pinto Bean Festival when the largely Tejano audience requested that the Anglo band play some Tejano music. The band responded that the only Tejano song they knew was "El Rancho Grande", which was met with much opprobrium from the audience.

I picked up this JRM set for a song at a sale at my favorite local record store a couple weeks ago. The first time I played it, my 16yo son dropped onto the sofa and took a long, comfortable nap.

@Wendy S: I remember back in '95 I read an interview where Kim Gordon said she liked to listen to Ratt, as it was better of many current (back then) bands. Could have been in jest w/ all of the Geffen backlash from intervieweres.

I can't count how many friends I have introduced to Roger Chapman and Family. Almost as many as I have with the Move. Can't say I have been 100% successful with either band. But taste is an individual matter, I suppose. Nonetheless, I will continue to promote the virtues of both these bands as well as several other ones. Should have been superstars.
