Sun. Dec 22nd, 3pm - 5pm:
The Unsolicited Return of the Winter Soul-stice (fill-in for Paul Bruno)
(More info...)
You can't stop the seasons from turning, and you evidently also can't stop an old dog from performing his one old trick. Answering the teeming clamor of one New York Times food columnist
, Gaylord Fields is returning to WFMU's airwaves for a one-off Winter Soul-stice program. In his time away he's learned nothing, so the format will remain the same: two hours of original 1960s soul 45s, and the abuse of an expensive reverb machine for the sake of corny vocal effects.
Please excuse the lack of individual greetings back to each of you lovely listeners and radio friends. I'm doing this show, as is my habit, spontaneously, and want it to be a good one.
Unfortunately have not-so-great stuff going on right now so I may not catch the whole show but I do want to get this in while I can—thanks Gaylord for all of the music and for providing a 2 hour refuge from the Sunday scaries! Enjoy your time away, hope to hear to do a fill-in at some point down the road.
6:08pm
Jesse:
Gaylord, I stumbled upon WMFU about 10 years ago. Yours was one of the first shows I gravitated to. Selfishly wishing you weren’t leaving but wishing you the best. Thanks for the music and the joy it has brought me.
I am so happy to have had the opportunity to listen to you for the last few years (late to the party, unfortunately). Because of you, I've learned about so much great music..Jessica Pratt, Alice Coltrane organ stuff, one particular Erik Satie banger, Triste Janero, Richard Hawley, the Cookies, Margaret Mandolph... and that's just off the top of my head. You are a treasure. Thank you. Archive time until you're back.
Hi Gaylord. You've lit up so many of my Sunday evenings with your show. I'm going to think of what follows as a sabbatical, because I can't imagine the station without you.
Suddenly remembering hearing you play "Come On Let's Go" by Broadcast so many moons ago and...oh, damn all-around. Smile on my face, lump in my throat, hole in my heart. Will miss the show but happy for you and your decision to move on after all this time. It couldn't have been super easy, I'd think. Thank you so much for being a part of our lives.
I'm very lucky to live in a building with landlords that also love Gaylord, so I can also do my laundry seamlessly with him playing on all three floors of the house.
Good evening Gaylord and fellow listeners!
Parting is such sweet sorrow. You deserve a break Gaylord but I will miss your masterful weaving together of music that I never would have thought would work together. You've been making beautiful musical tapestries all these years. You introduced me to so much gorgeous music over that time. I hope you'll be doing some fill-ins the next few months and that we haven't heard the last of the FayeLord episodes.
6:32pm
Dominic:
Gaylord ...Thanks...
6:33pm
Joe R.:
Got back just in time for Ame Caline!!! Just because I knew it was coming didn’t make it any less great—thanks again :D
Busting out my favorite candle for this show. Gonna miss you big time Gaylord. The NFL late game while listening to this show is simply nirvana for me.
6:55pm
rich:
preparing dinner on sunday is not going to be the same without you gaylord
I'm re-reading "A Visit from the Goon Squad" and right before the show I was at the section at the end about pauses in music and it feels rather à propos. So Gaylord, wishing you the most nourishing of pauses, and à bientôt (we hope.)
Many thanks Gaylord for all the great hours of radio. Always a song or song sequence (very often a whole show's worth) that blew my mind week after week. Wish you the best with whatever’s to come and hope to hear you again on these airwaves sooner rather than later. Love from Michigan.
yes condolences on your friend Gaylord. And of course thank you for your shows these past couple of years. I wish I would have discovered your show earlier but Im just really glad that i did! Thank you for the care , knowledge and expertise you put in every show. They are always an education for me. & good for you for doing what you need to do. Take care and whenever you're on, its appointment radio. Whenever you're ready Ill be listening.
7:13pm
Cooh John:
Sheila and Gaylord leaving at the same time. Damn.
I’ve never really been an “archives” guy, but i think i will be with this show. This show routinely has a certain serenity about it…a blissful tropical feeling that i have yet to see replicated on any other show. Gaylord, you will always and forever be my A+ go-to cabana DJ.
yes tamar guessed bowie and i guessed joy division
7:18pm
Siobhan:
You always could create a mood Gaylord. Thank you for being the soundtrack to so many Sunday evenings. Hoping your sabbatical - however long or short - is restorative. 💕
7:18pm
Harry Corvair:
Loved listening to your show these past couple years, Gaylord. Your playlists flawless, the lilt in your voice when on mic like a beloved friend. Gonna miss you, DJ Fields. :’-(
7:18pm
Bill (D)from Rock Tavern:
You will be sorely missed! Sunday will never be the same. Enjoy what you are setting out to do. Catch you on the Big Planet Noise comments board!
Due to the quirks of my weekend schedule I hardly ever get to listen to you live, Gaylord, but I had to come by for a minute and "pile on" too. Please enjoy your break and know you'll be missed.
Oh my goodness, Gaylord! I had to log on, too, to just praise you and thank you myself (although Handy is good at passing on messages, but you know). I haven't had the pleasure of listening to all 30 years of your shows, but I have the archives for some of that, and you have brought a lot of joy to us in the past few years in times that were rough to bring joy to. So I thank you so much!!!! I hope that next Sunday night and the Sunday nights after that are filled with much new and exciting beauty for you. You will be missed...xo
Gaylord, as a 30-year listener to your show, I am sad that this glorious run is ran. Thank goodness for archives and fill-ins, oh Master of Segues! I'm happy you get to explore new ways to spend your weekends, though, and will see you around, friend!
@Gaylord I think you might have used "the Patron Saint" (TM) without permission but I think the Catholic church probably owns that one so I'll let it slide.
i have stolen bishop's miter with your name on it. take that George Ahr!
7:37pm
katharsis:
Hellos Gaylord and all. Im out and about so just dropping into the chat to say thank you and woof moo I love you. Will listen to the archive. Yet its not the same. It matters to me that you are all out there live. “I was out here listening all the time…” xok
Sundays won’t be the same without you, but we are happy to hear you’ll be taking some well deserved time for yourself. Thank you for the many years of education and introduction to so many great things. We’ll always be here whenever you want to come back. We both love you very much. Xo, Ash and Justin ❤️❤️❤️
Gaylord, when you were new you reintroduced me to The Shirelles' Baby It's You and I've been grateful to your show ever since. Advancing fascism and no Gaylord - where is God?
Round about schedule change time I'm typing 'every FMU-J is a World' pretty much constantly.
When such a world is no longer a place we can inhabit regularly - it's a Thing. & there are - I suppose - scores of FMU-Js who are our psychopomps into just that many of these realms.
But I do call Gaylord Fields the Master Weaver.
The level of knowledge of Musics & the ability to utilize it to spontaneously Direct an experience of texture & affect like a born filmmaker is like no other's.
Your intelligence & character shine brightly across even as remote a medium as this - & be assured they mean something.
So yes - recharge - expand - whatever your instincts say is right. You've more than earned it.
We will miss your radio show. I've enjoyed many episodes, You've been a fixture of FMU long since before I was listening everyday. You carry yourself well, have excellent pronunciation, grammar, and timing... When we met you at Quinn's you were friendly. We enjoyed your DJ set.
I hope that you take time to enjoy life. We will be looking forward to any fill-ins. Be well, we are happy to have heard your shows . We do have the archives and the next 21 minutes. Thank you, Gaylord Fields for being you!
Gaylord, I think I've already told you about the most profound experience I've had with this show, when I needed it the most, and you played the Notwist then too. So, thank you.
I'm going to try not to be too maudlin with this. But the past few years have been the most trying I've experienced in my adult life. Sundays listening to WFMU have been a consistent respite for me, and Gaylord, you've been central to that. I very much appreciate that. I'm glad you're passing the torch to Faye, who I also adore. Enjoy your time off, it's a very much deserved bit of rest.
I could listen to an entire set--entire sets--of renditions of "The Water is Wide." Among my favorites, Karla Bonoff's, and a Southern California guitar duet whose names I forget, not a major label, maybe even a kind of vanity press. But the interpretation is lovely.
Bon voyage, M. Fields!

Very sad Gaylord. Will miss you

Prodigal Daughter:
Wishing you all good things for you in this new chapter of your life. Thank you.
I agree with everything everyone said but Revolution Rabbit Nov63 articulates my opinion very well.
You're introduced me to so many great artists and songs over the years Gaylord. This one - Fred Neil's The Water Is Wide is one of them. Judee Sill's The Kiss, Tim Hardin's It'll Never Happen Again are among the other stand outs, but I fear I shouldn't mention that last song name on this occasion.
Just to double down on the other comments, yes you've been there for us the last couple of years in a BIG way. You've kept me company at work (hospital) through the pandemic. You've made a difference!
💙💚💛💜🖤🧡🤍🤎
Beautiful parting show and we haven't even hit the grand finale! All the thrills and chills we've come to know. Thanks for everything and be well, Gaylord. Until next time.
here's to the universe bringing you health, Joy and fulfillment, Gaylord. been listening to you since you came to wfmu, and there's a void being created. (you, and Fabio...)
looking forward to some fill-ins and hearing that life's good for you!
take care.
Many heartfelt thanks for tonight and all the nights, Gaylord! We will miss you and also wish you all the best happiness, health, fulfillment, wonder, and joy. Go get it!
'Night, all!

what the hell was the last one...muppets meets Sargent Pepper Beatles album?
Gaylord, this is the greatest show on WFMU - the musical breadth and depth, the dry humor, the commitment to the bigger operation. Thank you for transporting us away for so many hours.
You will be missed.
Thanks again Gaylord. Best wishes and look forward to hear you perhaps during fill ins or fundraisers. Special thanks as well to all the commenters. This board is just a consistently wonderful place.

Spunky Monkey:
Go in peace Gaylord my brother... Much happiness to you.
The Great Gaylord..Master of Segues..Conjurer of Sweet Soulstices...Wizard of Sunday Soundscape Spells..You will be missed on the air. I hope your time away is 91.1x more fulfilling and enjoyable!
Dear dear Gaylord, again, thank you so very much. Hope you'll be back but regardless, great good luck with all new adventures and, once more - thank you. With all our love... S&M&S

Bob from Poughkeepsie:
Can't wait to see you back on the schedule Will miss your great show.Good luck
@ Gaylord: I'll miss you my soul brother. It means so much to hear precious R&B and Doo Wop recordings
played by you. Always blows my mind! Muchas gracias amigo, vaya bien... ❤️
Good night, take care and thank you for all the music, Gaylord. Best wishes to you and yours. You've brought joy to so many people, myself included. Looking forward to whenever you might be on WFMU again down the line. Health and happiness. And I'm not crying (I am).
Thanks for all the Sunday nights Gaylord! I love so much of WFMU but (should a parent pick a favorite child?) I admit this show has been my favorite. I'll have to adjust to a different Sunday night soundtrack. I think I can do that.
Rest well! I look forward to your triumphant return in fill-ins, Fayelord shows and an eventual regular show (I hope, I hope, I hope)!

I’m wishing Gaylord the best during this next stage.
For myself and the others on his thread, I hope for his return, but recognize that it’s got to be something he reenters with zest, when and if the time is right.
