That is truly vile Paul. I lived in a house in Santa Cruz that those monsters would come out of the drain in the kitchen sink and crawl a round on the counter top. They got me sick and I had to leave the house and go back home.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm
PaulRobeson1922:

That picture reminds me of Epictetus

- Consider What Comes First, Then What Follows, and Then Act

Cultivate the habit of surveying and testing a prospective action before undertaking it. Before you proceed, step back and look at the big picture, lest you act rashly on raw impulse. Determine what happens first, consider what that leads to, and then act in accordance with what you’ve learned.

When we act without circumspection, we might begin a task with great enthusiasm; then, when unforeseen or unwanted consequences follow, we shamefully retreat and are filled with regret: “I would have done this; I could have done that; I should have done it differently.”

Suppose you wanted to be victorious at the Olympic Games. That’s fine, but fully consider what you’re getting yourself into. What does such a desire entail? What needs to happen first? Then what? What will be required of you? And what else follows from that? Is this whole course of action really beneficial to you? If so, carry on.”

— The Art of Living: The Classical Mannual on Virtue, Happiness, and Effectiveness by Epictetus, Sharon Lebell

@PaulRobeson1922 I'm working on a book section about managing interdisciplinary teams, and that quote by Epictetus comes at a perfect time. I can't thank you enough.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm
Franco Twinkie:

Paul, that reminds me of the time I ran into a plate glass window. My nose started gushing blood and I could hardly stand up. In the light of the morning I saw a print of my face on the glass.

I love Skip Spence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm
PaulRobeson1922:

There is more to that short chapter- but I feel too long to post here

My pleasur3 @Malcontent

Sharon Lebell’s translation for our modern ear is great - older translations have even more references to the ultimate- the high baptismal flow
Avatar 4:43pm
HyperDose:

Ouch, glad you're okay Franco. Nosejobs are no fun!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm
PaulRobeson1922:

@Franco- This is the part i was reminded of upon seeing the image-

“Just as certain capacities are required for success in a particular area, so too are certain sacrifices required. If you wish to become proficient in the art of living with wisdom, do you think that you can eat and drink to excess? Do you think you can continue to succumb to anger and your usual habits of frustration and unhappiness? No. If true wisdom is your object and you are sincere, you will have work to do…You will have to overcome many unhealthy cravings and knee-jerk reactions…”

This set is so beautifully transcendent N. Jonesing to be in SF right now.. When I lived there, it was a rare Sunday if I didn't drive across the East Bay to Ocean Beach and take in the sunset.. incredible, since there's nothing like it on this coast. This set of music fits in perfectly.. I consider dark and light neighbors.. "within you without you". Living in the Bay Area, afforded a constant lesson in uplift and darkness..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm
Franco Twinkie:

But you know what LC? It didn't stop me from going to the famers market this morning. I took a picture of this young woman who had the Altamont look down cold. When I got home I dumped the peaches on the bed, then passed out.

Such is life.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm
Franco Twinkie:

I'll just say this: When you're moody, you create sublime mash-ups. It reminds me of when I was in sick in junior high and was unable to do anything but listen to the local underground station. Whatever was plaguing me was set off by a heightened sensitivity to music. My imagination would run wild while I was laying on the living room couch in front of the stereo.

Franco, interesting. Being a few years older than you, my early radio memories are Texas AM stations 60 to 68. FM and "underground" arrived in Texas early 70s and my record store friends and I thought them lame and always a bit behind or completely missing the best new music coming out.

Thanks for your insight N. The Bay Area and L.A. to a certain extent, have that tremendous difference between dark and light in their natural landscapes, which is a powerful reminder that joy and sorrow in equal measure creates a certain equanimity in this life..
