I really like this new Mal release. What's funny about it is that it's not at all fringe-y, as newly discovered recordings sometimes are. If someone wanted to get to the heart of what Mal is about, this is the recording I'd recommend.

Is this following the chord changes of Naima?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:36am
doctorjazz:

Don't know if it had to do with his tinnitis (Haden's), he used to perform behind a plexiglass shield so he wasn't exposed to loud noisis (especially with the Liberation Orchestra-saw them once, interesting sight). But DJpeterDE did hear something that I'm sure is correct, as the Haden is on tne Naim label, which is an audiophile label (and they also make high end CD players, amps, preamps and other very well regarded, expensive audio gear). They were known for minimal miking, no overdubbing, recording in real time to capture the real sound of musicians playing together in a room, so I'm sure there was no direct "bass into console" used. I was making my coffee while the track was on so didn't notice the sound, but that was the sound Naim engineers would have been shooting for, DJpeterDE has good ears indeed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am
Jeff Golick:

Sort of, @LG. I think they are the Naima changes rearranged.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:38am
doctorjazz:

Thanks, Doug-now restrictions, as per CDC, are 5 days isolation, 5 days masked around people, not as severe as they had been, so I'm officially out tomorrow.
And LG, I think they are basically Naima changes, also impressive listening!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:38am
DJpeterDE:

@doc cool, I’m not familiar with Naim
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:38am
doctorjazz:

And there's the melody
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am
Jeff Golick:

From the Angel Bat Dawid liner notes: "What if we could go back...we rewind we retrograde using a familar vehicle. Isaiah takes Tranes gorgeous ballad Naima and plays it in retorgade.Expanding the lines morphing the phrases to create a serenity. Isaiah exudes a whimiscal and respectfully warm conversation with the Chosen Few delivering a velvety buttery landscape. Sometimes spliting into splendid multiphonic explosions!"

I think retrograde has been a thing for a while Jeff (ah, DJpeterDE linked to confirm that it's been a known thing for a long time). Robin Holcomb on Sewelson's show yesterday stated that for one of the compositions, when she first wrote it, as was common for her, she didn't put staff on the notes, the vertical lines. A few years later she pulled out the piece and started working on it again. At first she didn't realize she had the music page upside down and was intrigued about how it sounded. Don't recall if she said which way she went for the final version.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:48am

I am not knowledgeable enough about experimental music but this sounds to me like Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music with drums on it. Or at least the way i remember it.

I would like to hear that track (Reel 4B) played by a piccolo orchestra.
