Thank you! Interestingly, I had to go back and listen to the original show this week, because I noticed the number of 45's was odd. Turns out the playlist from 16 years ago was missing a few singles (which are back in this redone show).

Mr. Movin' Man:

That Dion sessionography you posted to the old Dion web page was infinitely helpful to me in comprehending how this material fit together. Thank you for that.
  7:08pm
Carmelita:

Yeah the guitar is fabulous
Avatar 7:09pm
cometothesunshine:

Mr. Movin Man - that was primarily Bob Hyde's research, but I also went through the relevant copyright books to flesh out the information
  7:12pm
Mr. Movin' Man:

"Together Again" is such a dirty, grungy record. I love that sound.
Avatar 7:13pm
cometothesunshine:

At times it seems like the Belmonts are incidental participants in Dion's new direction.
  7:16pm
Mr. Movin' Man:

I'd love to pick Dion's brain about the making of this album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm
Alex of Chicago:

Loving all the Dion. I'll that I was really late in coming around to his music.
Avatar 7:27pm
cometothesunshine:

Thanks, Alex - me too!
  7:27pm
Mr. Movin' Man:

I was surprised "Spoonful" wasn't on "Kickin Child". Not that it needed more tracks, but it such a powerful recording.
Avatar 7:28pm
cometothesunshine:

Mr. Movin Man - I believe that the Kickin Child CD/LP closely followed an assembled stereo master for an unissued LP from 65/66. I actually saw the tape, but don't remember the exact sequence.
Avatar 7:30pm
cometothesunshine:

Some of those mixes had surfaced on Bronx Blues and Road I'm On, but Wonder Where I'm Bound was mostly newly mixed in 1968
  7:30pm
Mr. Movin' Man:

I got into Dion in my teens (which was mainly the early 90s). I knew Abe, Martin, John from the radio. But them I spotted the Dion '68 album in the CD rack with that black and white cover. I blind bought it and I was hooked! Not long after that "the ROAD I'm On" comp came out. Pure gold!

Nice cover of It’s All Over Now Baby Blue”
Avatar 7:39pm

He really does have an amazing voice.
Avatar 7:39pm
Natalie:

The association with faith (or lack thereof)/drugs in relation to rock and blues is an interesting one to me. But I suppose that's a discussion for a particular time and place....
Avatar 7:40pm
cometothesunshine:

I guess Columbia tried to push him into an adult pop area in 1963 and he rebelled by making these recordings.
Avatar 7:41pm
cometothesunshine:

They Kenny Rankin version of this song from a year earlier is pretty interesting too.
Avatar 7:43pm
Natalie:

This is really lovely
Avatar 7:43pm
cometothesunshine:

There is so much emotion and aching in his voice from this era
Avatar 7:44pm
cometothesunshine:

Al Kooper plays the organ on most of these 1965 tracks.
Avatar 7:45pm
cometothesunshine:

This is my favorite recording of this Bob Dylan song. Dion was a great arranger.
  7:47pm
Mr. Movin' Man:

Any word if "Together Again" will ever get a response re-release? Is the Complete Columbia box still a thing?
  7:47pm
Kelly:

Man, this entire block is just serene…
Avatar 7:48pm
cometothesunshine:

I think the Columbia box is a dead issue and Together Again tape burned in massive UMG fire. I do have the commercial reel to reel if they need it!

Natalie - this is from an acetate and remains officially unissued - So Goes Love has only been bootlegged.

When I first heard this 45 and it was longer than the album, well...it was satisfying

"So Goes Love" was fantastic. I love The Monkees version too. I never knew Dion did a version.

Hi folks... quite late but have been really enjoying this! Great spotlight on a very underrated talent!

Yeah, Mr. Movin Man - those 1966 outtakes are a bit of a mystery, but so glad they exist. I did a bunch of clean up on them and you'll hear so more coming up.

Buddy England cut a very different arrangement of Movin' Man with different lyrics in 1967

Kenny Rankin also later did a version of Berimbau

I must say that I had a very limited exposure to Dion and Belmonts before this evening...I am now a HUGE fan!!! Thank you cometothesunshine and Andy!!!! Wow!!!

Mr. Movin' Man:

"Dream On" sounds like it morphed into "He Looks Alot Like Me", didn't it?
Avatar 8:37pm
cometothesunshine:

Yeah, Dion was obviously reusing his unissued songs to create new ones in this period.
Avatar 8:38pm
cometothesunshine:

So little of what he did was released or heard, so why not. Most of his process was invisible from 1965-1968

sw2442:

Andrew...I've really enjoyed today's revisit...I believe the released Columbia singles after 1964 should have been more successful. I really think the Top 40 radio programmers only saw Dion as the guy who sang Doo-Wop and Runaround Sue and The Wanderer only. He did have a handful of hits on Columbia, but I also think Columbia didn't like his blues and folk recordings.
Avatar 8:47pm
KarenS:

G!
Avatar 8:47pm
cometothesunshine:

SW2442 - I think they invested heavily in Dion and unless they could see a big pay off, they just wrote off his recordings.

SW2442 - THERE IS A LONG LINE ALREADY AT BPN'S
Avatar 8:51pm
sw2442:

Andrew...and it's a shame Columbia probably felt that way...these are really good...and it would have kept Dion in the spotlight well before Abraham, Martin, and John...thanks for an amazing show today...I'm guessing remastered episode six next week?

Well, I've always liked Dion, but this was a true exercise in how to appreciate a genuine talent.

Thanks for this lesson.

And now I've got to go find some more Dion records to add to the collection!
  8:55pm
Mr. Movin' Man:

I used to fantasize about Dion doing a one-off performance with a symphony orchestra, performing material from his '68 album. I don't think he'd go for it.
