People can't comprehend just how persuasive The Rolling Stones were back then. And believe you me, I was under their sway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm
coelacanth∅:

i asked for between the buttons for xmas because i saw it had "connection" on it. i liked the stones from very young -maybe before my older brother did... but wanted it because i'd heard connection on a nrps/dead bootleg and loved it -not probably knowing what it's about.
a top 5 favorite 'stones album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm
Franco Twinkie:

For sure Coel. I was a fence sitter about The Beatles until my sister and I went to see HELP! But with The Rolling Stones it was instantaneos.
Avatar 5:19pm
LadyChanticleer:

I'm still a fence sitter with the Beatles. It's legit an area of music I simply don't know.
Avatar 5:20pm
LadyChanticleer:

The Stones on the other hand... I wanted to sit in a room with Keith and Charlie and bro-down on music immediately
Avatar 5:21pm
HyperDose:

Same here. Don't think my folks had any Beatles records. Mom was more of a Stones fan and so am I.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm
Franco Twinkie:

Natalie, you are so intuitive about music not of your era. And if you don't get The Beatles, what are the chances that a person of lesser abilities will?
Avatar 5:24pm
LadyChanticleer:

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate their LSD records but there are deeper cooler cuts I would rather sit with... even Iron Butterfly
Avatar 5:25pm
HyperDose:

I appreciate The Beatles for their contributions to advancing recording techniques because their budgets were so huge they'd just post up in the stew and muck about with gear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm
Franco Twinkie:

Their acid stuff never connected deeply. By then I was listening almost exclusively to West Coats psych.
Avatar 5:26pm
LadyChanticleer:

And it packs a heavier punch. So does Boston psych of the era!
Avatar 5:28pm
LadyChanticleer:

But not connecting deeply hits me. I think the only one who resonated was George and that's perhaps because I am cult-adjacent and listened a lot during my investigations on an ashram in India. I respect his commitment.
Avatar 5:28pm
LadyChanticleer:

He tried to mean it a little harder. And Ringo just seems chill.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm

As a Hellraiser special last week, Uncle Michael dedicate a show to songs by George Harrison done by other people. I was spellbound. He was the Beatle I truly connected with.

I was in San Francisco when George walked down Haight Street playing the guitar. I was standing on Market Street looking at The Chronical in a news paper box. "There's a Beatle around here." I thought to myself.

Of course my older sister got Meet the Beatles when it came out. It was played constantly. My favorite song was Think For Yourself - the only George song on the album. But when we went to see HELP! George singing I Need You on The Salisbury Plain knocked me flat. I was ten years old, and it told me something about the future me and how I would move through life.

When George passed, I heard the news on the radio.. It was well known that he was ill, especially because he was hospitalized on Staten Island of all places! I looked out my windows towards the sky, and immediately got the chills.. through the years that happens whenever there is a dearly loved musical spirit nearby.. then I cried.. I was working at Rudy's Music, that day in the repair shop, and the news media came in for a story.. My feelings about George compelled them to video me expressing how much I loved him.. I didn't make their news feature that evening, which was a relief.. not a fan of the 'news' media.. then and now..

Tom Petty is one of those people that people are deeply moved by, even in death. In 1977 Kid Congo Powers and myself went to see Blondie the first night they played in L.A. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers opened the show. The Whisky was only half full. His set was so moody, lot's of yellow light. So different that Blondie. I never saw him again, but at least I saw him once.
