	8:09pm Dean: Cool! I do know her. She lives up the road a bit with her spouse, a former colleague at Cal. His brother is Kit Robinson. I enjoy her poetry quite a bit.

	8:11pm Dean: Oh, yes, and there are many of them. I was skimming Silliman's In the American Tree and Messerli's two anthologies a couple days ago. Quite a creative force.

	8:21pm Dean: So noted! I will explore. I'm reading Justus George Lawler's Celestial Pantomime: Poetic Structures of Transcendence, far afield from L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E and all. Lawler's an eccentric character, but the book is helpful for a writer willing to translate critical observations to practice.

	♥ 8:22pm Gary: Dan, Colleen, and Spencer have all passed away, unfortunately. George is still alive and lives in San Francisco. Wonderful person & poet. Used to work at Green Apple, but I think he retired
	8:23pm Dean: Laura retired two or three years ago from Small Press Distribution.
	♥ 8:24pm Gary: George was largely responsible for getting me to read poetry -- he sold me a copy of Ted Berrigan & co.'s Bean Spasms before I had read any poetry and told me I'd love it. It was $30, a huge sum for me in the 1980s, but I bought it and loved it and it (and George) changed my life. We worked together at Tower Records, where we met in like 1987-88

	♥ 8:31pm WR: I don't remember "Hit Me..." having the global focus. Guess I was just dancing and not paying attention in 1978.
	8:31pm Dean: That is fantastic. Now I need to put my hands on the Berrigan. I've always enjoyed poetry, but a turning point for me was when John Ashbery appeared on the Mike Douglas Show(!!!). I didn't see the episode, but my mom did, and she got a kick out of his one-liners in As We Know, which he read (on television!!!). I bought it for her and was henceforth drawn to difficult wordplay, Ashbery's in particular. But I also have fairly strict conservative tastes in poetry.
	♥ 8:34pm Gary: WR, I am convinced that that version of Hit Me is NOT the one I used to listen to as a kid -- but it has been so long since I originally heard it, I can't be sure
	8:34pm Dean: Buddy in library school at UCLA, late '80s, got me into Scalapino, MacLow, Bernstein, Coolidge, etc.
	♥ 8:35pm Gary: Coolidge's Solution Passage is my favorite poetry book of the late 20th century

	♥ 8:36pm Gary: Also look up p. inman (aka Peter Inman) -- my favorite of the language writing world, but east coast
	8:38pm Dean: I get a kick out of The Rova Improvisations, perhaps for obvious reasons. Hmmm, Inman rings more than a bell... I have a beloved copy of the 1969 Koch When the Sun Tries to Go On, Black Sparrow. I can't read it without laughing until I cry.

	♥ 8:42pm Gary: Although I just googled it and found this quote from Koch, which tells a slightly different story: “Frank said to me, on seeing the first 72 lines [of When the Sun Tries to Go On] — which I regarded as a poem by itself — ‘Why don’t you go on with it as long as you can?’ Frank at this time decided to write a long poem too…”
	8:43pm Dean: A contest. Splendid. We discussed O'Hara's "Ave Maria" last night.
	8:43pm Dean: So, not a contest, but ordinary inspiration and anxiety of influence. Even better!

	8:09pm Dean: Cool! I do know her. She lives up the road a bit with her spouse, a former colleague at Cal. His brother is Kit Robinson. I enjoy her poetry quite a bit.

	8:21pm Dean: So noted! I will explore. I'm reading Justus George Lawler's Celestial Pantomime: Poetic Structures of Transcendence, far afield from L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E and all. Lawler's an eccentric character, but the book is helpful for a writer willing to translate critical observations to practice.

	♥ 8:24pm Gary: George was largely responsible for getting me to read poetry -- he sold me a copy of Ted Berrigan & co.'s Bean Spasms before I had read any poetry and told me I'd love it. It was $30, a huge sum for me in the 1980s, but I bought it and loved it and it (and George) changed my life. We worked together at Tower Records, where we met in like 1987-88

	8:31pm Dean: That is fantastic. Now I need to put my hands on the Berrigan. I've always enjoyed poetry, but a turning point for me was when John Ashbery appeared on the Mike Douglas Show(!!!). I didn't see the episode, but my mom did, and she got a kick out of his one-liners in As We Know, which he read (on television!!!). I bought it for her and was henceforth drawn to difficult wordplay, Ashbery's in particular. But I also have fairly strict conservative tastes in poetry.
