Glad you dig it, NGH. What instrument did you play in the HS marching band?

I'm no classical music expert, not by a long shot. I know what I like.

That Caine record is hella fun, as is his Schumann thing. The Bach is a bit of a stretch.

I love that big swell at the end of the first movement of this Sibelius.

I would like to see Otto Dix's expressionist history of the liturgy though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Sam Segal:

Glad to have you back as long as we can keep you, Doc. I saw Uri Caine during one of Zorn's all-star fundraiser shows at the Stone, where the artists improvise together in different on-the-spot combinations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
doctorjazz:

(Wonder if I can find the Caine/Mahler...). He had a great album of music from the turn from 19th to 20th Century, and also tHe Goldberg Variations.
  10:59pm
Dean:

Saw Caine at the Skirball Center in LA with Don Byron and others around that time, doctorjazz.

I am just about 0% spiritual, but something about the liturgy grabs me.

Caine's GV missed the mark, I thought.
  11:00pm
Dean:

I've spent the past couple of years diving into Shostakovich's 48 and his string quartets. Bountiful rewards.

I saw him with Don Byron as well, more than once, and with the Mahler presentation (his ensemble included a turntablist).

i haven't seen masada since 2007 (used to see them multiple times per year). the first time I saw John Zorn was in '98 in FL w/ Masada... (sam rivers trio opened)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm

Saw the original Masada many times at the old Knitting Factory. Still think that band was one of the best live experiences I've had...
  11:08pm

I never saw Masada live, but I have to agree 100% with you, doctorjazz. The very definition of ensemble.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm

maybe dj olive.. he’s collaborated with caine and is on the mahler release
  11:08pm

Saw Electric Masada, which was spectacular.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm

sam rivers trio opening for masada sounds fantastic . reminding me of the great steven bernstein tzadik release ‘diaspora blues’ with the rivers trio
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm

Saw Electric Masada as well, but the quartet (with Dave Douglas)
Was (to me, imo, all those disclaimers) the absolutely best conglomeration.

Sorry, that last blast kind of scared me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm

speaking of masada, caine etc you know what’s also really great? the masada book 2 release Stolas which is OG masada quartet minus zorn but with uri caine and joe lovano on tenor

Alrright, up at 6, been fun chatting/listening, but need that sleep. Night all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
Sam Segal:

Yeah, that "Kabbalah" part before this one had some Klezmer sounding parts to it, but then I played this "Dream" section because I also wanted something that had the slightly surreal eeriness that I imagine could be part of a story about a Dybbuk.

leonardbernstein.com...

“In Jewish folklore, a dybbuk is a wandering soul which enters into a living person and talks through his mouth, presenting a separate and alien personality. The story of Ansky's play is about two young lovers secretly pledged to each other before birth by the oath of their fathers. The pledge is broken by the girl's father, who betroths her to another, so the boy, in despair, dabbles in black arts. To his misfortune, he is successful and becomes a dybbuk which enters the body of his beloved.“

"Traditionally, dybbuks tended to be male spirits who possessed women on the eve of their weddings typically in a sexual fashion by entering the women through their vaginas which is seen in Ansky's play."

@Dean...here's a quote from Bernstein on Bruckner: "'Look, there are no real orgasms in Bruckner's music,' Bernstein said. 'He doesn't reach a climax. He's always gonna be, but it never happens. He takes so long to make his points. He's very loquacious. No matter what you say about Mahler, he made his points'." www.abruckner.com...

@zzz: tbf, the girl in question sort of sought it out for gigs (she was a vj/video artist). But unlike other gigs (akron/family[i introduced her to the AF lads], and a place to bury strangers, who were super cool) logic just came across as skeevy. I still dig him as a musician.

Besides, there are many ways other than orgasm to "climax" or "go beyond" the physical phenomenon or its literary/musical figure. Imagine the intensity as one approaches, however long it takes, "no real orgasm." Asymptotes turn me on.
