This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Hi Flash Strap, drummer explorers. Guessing who the guitar is on Thoughts with Chico.

Coryell on his first record, doing unbelievably gorgeous work here

Hi WR!

Yes, Coryell, remembered/guessed correct. Coryell's first time on record? Really?

quite a debut

Look like it. This was 66. Wikipedia says he joined Burton in 67.
Avatar 7:14pm
Flash Strap:

last 2 sections of this suite were written or cowritten by Arnie, who's got a crazy electric sax sound going. Some great guitar from Bob Mann here too

that sax sound isn't just selectric, it's more like electrocuted. arc danger skronk
Avatar 7:21pm
Flash Strap:

i've never really gone deep on Hammer as perhaps I should - the Universal horrors though, right in my wheelhouse
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:23pm

Know what you mean - but Christopher Lee & Peter Cushing are magnificent & stuff. More into SciFi & MonsterMovies than Horror - but not splitting hairs for these...
Yeah that sound still arresting 52 years later...

Wow. Talisker took the lessons of Albert Ayler and Milford Graves to heart and made their own. Never seen or heard this record. It's great!

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

It's true too that in the Americas - ancestry is most often mixed. 'Hendrix' for example a Celtic name. I also think a lot in terms of Europe itself being Pagan if one goes back before the Xian eras - & even Shamanistic if back far enuff. & all of that in terms of the Musics.
Avatar 7:55pm
Flash Strap:

@rev: indeed, and bagpipe music is tied up in histories of resistance to british occupation - a whole class of "indoor" bagpipe only came to be after british outlawed bagpipes as instruments of war, for example
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:57pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Much like Drums among Slaves. Maybe. Thinking far afield for a reason to play sax & pipes together - but there it all is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm
Doug Schulkind:

I once wrote a piece praising this record and Hyder posted it on his website.
Avatar 7:58pm
Flash Strap:

Hi Doug! how did I not see that when doing my reading-up? egg-on-face
Avatar 7:59pm
Flash Strap:

but that's fantastic to learn, i'm overjoyed to learn of this confluence of excellence
Avatar 8:01pm
Flash Strap:

“Hyder’s debut record – Dreaming of Glenisla recorded 1975 – sounds for all the world like an Albert Ayler album released post-New Grass. The twin sax/twin bass lineup of Hyder’s quintet creates a droning, cantatorial spiritsound one can imagine as the sound of Ayler’s dreams.”

I like my Flash Strap face sunnyside up.
Avatar 8:03pm

Flash Strap:

i recently played an extended piece from the other side of this album, which features an incredible 3-part suite in homage to Coltrane and Ayler (as well as the MacCrimmons) - tonight we hear the A side with its advanced vocal techniques
  8:11pm
Mr. Jackpots:

Hello Flash Strap, just want to say I really enjoyed the Children of All Ages from last week. I'll check those Arnie Lawrence appearances in the playlist. Thank you! : )
Avatar 8:12pm
Flash Strap:

Hi Mr. Jackpots! so glad you enjoyed! reasonably sure you'll enjoy this evening's Arnie appetizer as well
Avatar 8:14pm
Flash Strap:

this vocal ensemble includes Maggie Nichols, who among many other projects was part of that tremendous Centipede record
Avatar 8:22pm
Flash Strap:

a much more angular attack on this album
Avatar 8:26pm
Flash Strap:

White Light features only John Rangecroft's sax; its follow up, Humanity, has only Davie Webster
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:27pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'Coltrane' a Scottish name too if I'm not mistaken ...course sometimes it's the names of Slavers & not Ancestors - & then sometimes both.
Avatar 9:05pm
Flash Strap:

up next a really really fun one
Avatar 9:06pm
Flash Strap:

Jean-Pierre Grasset on synths here, crucial stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm

Quite the guitarist, don't know of him (vaguely familiar name, nothing more), cool!
Avatar 9:11pm
Flash Strap:

what a cool record this is
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm
doctorjazz:

The backgrounds seem to have no connection to the bluesy guitar playing, strange.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm
doctorjazz:

It is a cool record indeed!
Avatar 9:12pm
Flash Strap:

his follow-up is also on Fleau, we'll hear from it in a bit. he's also recorded with Mike Cooper
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm
doctorjazz:

Not too expensive on Discogs, but all the versions are being sold from France (so shipping hikes the price considerably).
Avatar 9:16pm
Flash Strap:

@doc: i love that tension between the synths/electric guitar and the more traditional playing, not a terribly uncommon dichotomy in psychedelic music, etc. but pursued in a very interesting way there
Avatar 9:16pm
Flash Strap:

shipping is coocoo these days
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm
doctorjazz:

The playing was straight ahead blues/ragtime guitar (really good), the backgrounds very disjointed (in relation to the foreground guitar and singing), odder than most psychedelic music, which more consistently announces its weirdness. I did like it a bunch.
Avatar 9:19pm
Flash Strap:

Verto is often a group ensemble (elsewhere on the LP Lefebvre provides dobro), but sometimes it's just Jean-Pierre Grasset solo, and that's the case here.
Avatar 9:19pm
Flash Strap:

yeah much more of a double-music effect

I noted on the first episode of the new 'It's Complicated' program for PrawgRawk with Dave Mandl on the mainstream that you've schooled me in how Lounge & Exotica were precedents to Concepts Album in Rawk~Pop ...tho the first episode was guest-hosted by ScottWiliams & I'm not sure who noticed ...it will likely come up again !...
