View Rich in Washington's profile |
A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

Attack Of The Comps! Vol. XXXII: Sub Pop Cassette 5 |
||||||||||
Visible Targets | Just For Money | V/A - Sub Pop Cassette 5 | Sub Pop | 1981 |
Review from MaximimumRockAndRoll, MRR #2, Oct. 1982: "Sub Pop is an innovative little magazine that deals intelligently with alternative American music, sort of a pint-sized version of its cousin OP. In place of the usual eclectic printed zine comes this equally eclectic aural zine. The variety of musical styles covered, in one sense a strength, also ensures that few will appreciate the entire LP. (...) The rest ranges from good post-punk, pop, and psychedelic to unlistenable art damage, but those interested in the best of the non-punk underground should look no further." |
1:45:59 (Pop-up) | ||||
Beakers | What's Important | V/A - Sub Pop Cassette 5 | Sub Pop | 1981 | "The Beakers were an American art punk band from Seattle, Washington, formed in 1980. Although the band only existed for twelve months, they were considered influential on the local underground music scene." | 1:48:59 (Pop-up)
Doug Kahn | Reagan Speaks For Himself | V/A - Sub Pop Cassette 5 | Sub Pop | 1981 |
"
Douglas Kahn writes and speaks about the intersections of history, theory and contemporary practice in art, music, literature, media arts, cinema, sound, electromagnetism, science, technology and politics, from the late-19th Century to the present, with an emphasis on the traditions of the avant-garde, experimentalism, bohemian and subcultural activities.
" A re-edited version of this track was included as a flexi in an issue of RAW Magazine on the occasion of Reagan's election to POTUS. It's also included in the compilation Reaganonics Blues. |
1:51:06 (Pop-up) | ||||
Steve Fisk | Digital Alarm | V/A - Sub Pop Cassette 5 | Sub Pop | 1981 | " Steve Fisk is something of a Pacific Northwest legend, and a cult favorite around the globe. In 1982 he joined the instrumental rock band Pell Mell who released some records on SST and twelve years later, in 1994, Pell Mell released the critically acclaimed Interstate on Geffen Records. Though Fisk has worked with the likes of Nirvana and Soundgarden, he is perhaps most revered for his production work with Beat Happening and on the first four Screaming Trees records. His real creative juices, however, were unleashed via his own pioneering work with samples and tape manipulation - even if he insists it was only a sideline. " | 1:54:32 (Pop-up)

Neo Boys | Dirty White Lies | V/A - Sub Pop Cassette 5 | Sub Pop | 1981 |
A very early Portland OR punk band. " Neo Boys were contemporaries of first-wave Portland punk bands like Wipers and the Rats, but their sound was also rooted in the skinny elemental riffs and the outsider spirit of New York punk..." |

I don't get the dispute about trans. It's been around for a very long time. We've all pretty much accepted it. But there are issues involving exploitation of gender ambiguity that seem to me to be worth discussing.
Meanwhile, if Henny Youngman can make jokes about his wife, then some other comedian can make jokes about a trans man or woman. I mean, it's fucking funny, isn't it?
