It's true, Charles. Our last "Scarlet Queen."

Scott67: That's excellent! Those guys really rocked the station when they came in. A local band was supporting them, but DEAD absolutely blew everyone away.

How funny he remembers. That was quite a while ago.

Have you ever heard The Unexpected? Like Twilight Zone.

I feel like, sooner or later, a detective show does a "gambling / horse racing" story."

Imaginos: I don't remember. Is that the OG Twilight Zone? Or a different iteration?

OG.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:19pm
Austin Rich:

I do like the old phone sounds on radio shows like this.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:21pm
Austin Rich:

This episode has a lot of surface noise, for Box 13, which is usually very pristine sounding. But you can hear the skips in the transcription disc.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:22pm
Austin Rich:

Box 13 often makes "meta" references to radio, so having Dan purchase a radio and produce it at the track feels like another example of that "runner."
Avatar 9:23pm
Mr Fab:

I think I mentioned here before that horse-racing was the most popular sport in the US, pre-tv. So there’s plenty of movies (and radio shows too, apparently) set at β€œthe races,” from the Marx Bros on down.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:24pm
Austin Rich:

Of course! (Pre-TV, there's only so many baseball games a year, and horse racing happens every day.)
Avatar 9:25pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

And who could forget Eliza Do little shouting "Move yer bloom in' arse!"

I think I need to make a super-cut of all of Suzy's bad jokes at the end of each episode.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:30pm
Austin Rich:

While this show introduces itself as, "The Log of The Black Parrot," it is, in fact, a new pilot for a new sailing show, re-tooled to, hopefully appeal to a wider audience. It wasn't picked up, but we do have a recording of it.

You'll notice some similarities to The Voyage of Scarlet Queen, including some cast, characters, and gimmicks.
  9:33pm
Charles:

Wow it feels weird having a mix of the familiar with new elements.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:33pm
Austin Rich:

We will have Red as the first mate, but a new captain (or, at least, someone with a different name). My "head cannon" is that Phil Carney finally had to quit / leave / abandon the sailing life, someone else bought the ship and changed the name, and Red stayed on as the first mate.

There's no evidence that this is true. It's just what I came up with.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:34pm
Austin Rich:

If I'm not mistaken, there's a new writing partner. I suspect that had an impact on the style and flavor of the new show.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:36pm
Austin Rich:

The music cues are new. (Or, were probably part of some studios sound library, and recycles from something I'm unfamiliar with.)
  9:36pm
Charles:

Can you remind us when the last regular episode aired and this pilot did Austin?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:38pm
Austin Rich:

The last regular episode aired 25 February 1948. So it had been a couple years since this show had been on.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:38pm
Austin Rich:

I have a feeling that "sailing adventures" were starting to feel "old-timey" in post-war America, and so the show didn't get picked up.
Avatar 9:40pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

Then there was The Ghost and Mrs Muir
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:41pm
Austin Rich:

Oh, wow, Imaginos. I haven't seen that in ages... maybe 25 years? I should re-watch that. I sort of love Rex Harrison, for some dumb reason.
Avatar 9:42pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

He was a wonderful actor
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:43pm
Austin Rich:

So, in this show, the Captain and Red have been sailing together for 3 years.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:47pm
Austin Rich:

I suspect that this is not the first time that Red has gotten into a fist fight with his captain.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:50pm
Austin Rich:

Certainly, it is a bit of a trope in sailing stories that, when we are meeting the crew of a ship, the Captain comes off as a real bastard at first. I suspect the idea was that we would learn how to "like" the Captain in future episodes, but in this episode, you don't really like the Captain at all.
Avatar 9:52pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

The Sea is a jealous lover, so you can't blame a captain for acting cold.
  9:53pm
Charles:

The sound quality is great on this episode.
  9:53pm
Heather:

I think you can blame a captain for telling a girl he's going to kill her because she's too pretty, though! Phew. Hi all! Listening and lurking!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:54pm
Austin Rich:

Thanks for mentioning, Charles! I actually didn't do much with this one, except boost the signal. But it does sound good.
Avatar 9:54pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

Yeah, that you blame him for
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:54pm
Austin Rich:

Yeah, Matthew says and does some AWFUL stuff in the first episode, Heather. Gonna take a lot to earn our love after this... which might be another reason why it wasn't picked up as a regular show.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:55pm
Austin Rich:

And: great to see you, Heather!
Avatar 9:56pm
Mr Fab:

I suspect you’re right Austin about why this pilot wasn’t picked up. Sailing stories were probably seen as too old-fashioned, and were getting swiftly replaced by Westerns. Which now seem old-timey to us, but keep in mind the Old West era had really only ended a few decades before the β€˜50s.
  9:56pm
Heather:

Marry her?? How old is this girl?!?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:57pm
Austin Rich:

Good point about Westerns, Mr. Fab!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:58pm
Austin Rich:

Leper stories are probably also not very appealing to some markets, I suspect.
  9:58pm
Heather:

Oh boy. Now doesn't everyone have leprosy?
  9:59pm
Charles:

After you mate, after you!
Avatar 10:00pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

Maybe that's why he wanted to kill her, so she would die beautiful
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:01pm
WR:

Well, that was certainly uplifting.
  10:01pm
Heather:

That might be too generous, Imaginos! But maybe!
  10:02pm
Heather:

Hey nothing gets em talking like leprosy. Isn't that how the saying goes?
  10:05pm
Charles:

I love all that stuff (but I am glad I had more episodes with Phil than Kincaid).
  10:06pm
Charles:

I want Sailing Suzie.
Avatar 10:07pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

I wish they had done a series of the Continental Operative
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:08pm
Austin Rich:

That would have been great, Imaginos. I think a few have been done in the modern era, but not then.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:08pm
Austin Rich:

Charles: we should write a show where Suzie is the captain, and makes bad jokes.
Avatar 10:11pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

Have you seen Love, Death and Robots?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:12pm
Austin Rich:

I've seen a few, but not all of them. I want to sit down with them more, especially since Obadiah's recommendation.
Avatar 10:13pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

Did you see Beyond the Aquila Rift?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
Austin Rich:

I don't think so. It's not ringing a bell, anyway.
Avatar 10:15pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

LDR episode. Really good.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:18pm
Austin Rich:

In sci-fi, the short-stories were a big deal, and the novels were an afterthought.

In rock and roll, the singles were a big deal, and the albums were an afterthought.

At least, I see the parallel.
Avatar 10:20pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

And the Imaginos saga mixes Rock and Science Fiction
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
Austin Rich:

That's right! I love the places that Sci-Fi and rock and roll connect.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:21pm

I think that's why Max Headroom hits so hard: it's basically Rock and Roll Sci-Fi.
