* Mandrill Press
2oz Glen Passaic
1 large orange
electric drill fitted with 1/2" spade bit
large mandrill

Bore hole halfway into orange with spade bit. Pour Glen Passaic into hole. Place orange, hole-side up, between mandrill's fearsome jaws, and bid him squeeze into chilled Collins glass. Top up with ice.

Is the spade bit really required? Couldn't I just bore in with a mandrel? I'm more of a mandrel-drilled mandrill man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm
adamdoesit:

AiT!

Listener Robert, as it happens, your mandrel drilling suggestion hews to the spirit of the original. When the Mandrill Press was first introduced at the Stork, the recipe called for fixing the orange on a mandrel, and letting the mandrill's fearsome jaws do the drilling. The problem then was getting the Glen Passaic into the orange. After bartender Lefty Carruthers lost the fingers of his dominant hand and gained his nickname, the spade bit was adopted as a safety measure.
