Hi everyone! Next week YWHNM will be three years old. Today we already have a special episode exclusively with Dutch language songs.

'Behave yourself' would be more acurate.

Hi Dean!

Dean:

Good morning (here, at least)!
  12:59pm
Dean:

From the Guardian obituary:

He wrote his own poetry and aimed to write novels, though he observed that his appreciation of great literature meant that “the presumption of trying it myself is inhibiting”. His conversation, which involved much gesticulation and dramatic facial expressions, would often be punctuated by quotes from Blake or Langland’s Piers Plowman, and he taught himself Old Icelandic in order to read the Icelandic Sagas. He spent some months teaching English at a secondary school around the time Dr Feelgood formed, but fell foul of the headteacher because of his long-haired, student-like appearance. Later in life, he developed a keen interest in astronomy and built an observatory on the roof of his home in Westcliff-on-Sea.

Jan Turkenburg:

Sad and typical that you learn details about people's lives, only when they've just died.
Even within a family, or circle of friends.
  1:10pm
Dean:

So true.

I suspect a lot of people have experienced the inhibition of "the presumption of trying it myself," too. I've found a way to circumvent it: take a class with deadlines.

  1:36pm
Dean:

I don't even know Herman de Man! Must explore. Paul de Man was Belgian, but his academic career was almost exclusively in the US, as you note.

Herman de Man (a pseudonym) was a novelist who met a tragic ending. Pleased to learn about him.

He legally changed his family name in 'de Man' however.
