Kicking off our story with a kidnapping is sort of a different way of starting Box 13, but I think this is our second story that was set on a boat? Maybe they're running out of settings...

We have enough Box 13 and Dimension X to run until March. (We'll be taking December off for some Holiday programming, of course.) I know I've mentioned that I'll follow up Dimension X with a show called X-Minus One, a program made with the same creative team and production crew, just under a different name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm
MHLee:

hmmm where do these tickets go
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:09pm
Austin Rich:

I haven't entirely decided what to follow up Box 13 with. I have a few ideas, of adventure / noir type shows. I'm leaning toward "Candy Matson," a detective show that only has a handful of episodes, but offers the rare Female Led Detective show, which I'm a big fan of.

This is another recordings where you can, very faintly, hear another recording behind the one that is prominent. I know I've talked about this before, but a lot of Old Time Radio shows exist in that form.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:15pm
Austin Rich:

Half-way through the show we now have the premise of the plot: a well-worn "locked room" style mystery, where someone has gathered together a group of suspects, and one of them is the murderer. This is certainly new ground for Box 13, but in 2022, seems like a really obvious and over-used plot. I wonder how listeners felt about it in 1949? It was probably still not "new" in those days, but I'm sure it wasn't as over-used as it is these days.

Austin Rich:

I realize that this boat is heading toward Havana. While Americans couldn't go to Havana for a long time, were were only blocked from going in 1962. In 1949, you could easily go to Havana, any time you liked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm
MHLee:

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:18pm
Austin Rich:

In the modern age, you can go to Cuba, though I'm not sure if you can take direct flights or boats there. But you aren't blocked from going, like you once were.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:20pm
Austin Rich:

Interestingly, "Bold Venture" is set in Havana, Cuba, in a hotel called, "Shannon's Place." It's almost like Box 13 is sort of "handing off" to our new show, by way of introduction.

There are direct flights to Cuba, though probably not many. Obama made some openings that made it reasonably possible to go. Trump made it harder to go and Biden has yet to undo what he did. I went twice, on tours focused on music and culture. Absolutely loved it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm
MHLee:

my school had a trip there about a month before obama visited... they loved it as well
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:33pm

I knew it wasn't hard these days, but I didn't realize you could take a direct flight! That's cool.

"Travel to Cuba for tourist activities remains prohibited by statute. However, the Department of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has issued general licenses for 12 categories of travel. Individuals who meet the regulatory conditions of the general license they seek to travel under do not need to apply for an additional license from OFAC to travel to Cuba. The 12 categories of authorized travel to Cuba are: family visits; official business of the U.S. government, foreign governments, and certain intergovernmental organizations; journalistic activity; professional research and professional meetings; educational activities; religious activities; public performances, clinics, workshops, athletic and other competitions, and exhibitions; support for the Cuban people; humanitarian projects; activities of private foundations or research or educational institutes; exportation, importation, or transmission of information or informational materials; and certain authorized export transactions."
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:35pm
Austin Rich:

"Bold Venture" is produced by Santana Productions. "Santana" was the name of the boat that Bogart owned, and enjoyed sailing on with Bacall. So the premise of them on a boat... made by the production company with the name of their boat... seems like Bogart was sort of single minded in this project.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:36pm

Thanks for the tip, MHLee. That's pretty cool. I should try to go, someday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm

👻 Swag For Life Member 9:38pm
WR:

I'm not up to date. The combination of Covid wrecking their nascent tourist industry and politics may have cut back the flights. The first time I went had to go to Florida first. The second time I flew direct from NYC.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:45pm
Austin Rich:

The relationship between Slate and Sailor is sort of "vague," in that Slate sort of acts like he's not attached to Sailor... except when he feels like being intimate. And this speech about how Slate is taking care of Sailor as a favor to a friend sort of further muddles things. The way they flirt with each other further muddles things again... Maybe it'll become more clear as the show goes on?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:45pm

👻 Swag For Life Member 9:49pm
WR:

Thank you for the Hairston / King Moses link.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:49pm
Austin Rich:

Bogart was 25 years older than Bacall, and Bogart seemed to enjoy younger women in general. I have to wonder that, some of this stuff about not being comfortable with "Sailor" and wanting her to leave, and the including the flirting with other women in the show, must have... meant something.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:50pm
Austin Rich:

Any time, WR! I love links to the musical accompaniment.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:54pm
Austin Rich:

There are a lot of accents in "Bold Venture," and aside from Jester, who is actually African American, I'm pretty sure all the other accents are by white actors. Just like in "The Voyage of The Scarlet Queen," it wasn't really cool then that they didn't try to cast authentic actors, and there are other problematic issues with these kinds of impersonations. However, in 1951, to feature Cuban voices on American radio - even impersonations - is sort of impressive. I'm sure this program went a long way to making Americans aware of life in Cuba at all.

One of the male voices in this documentary is Bogart's son, and you get the impression that he really thought his dad was great... even all his flaws.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:16pm

He did sort of make it okay to hide how you really are feeling, something that might not have been great for culture, by made for some compelling film.

This show was made in 1951, and psychiatry was still relatively nascent, and really only took off in the 60's. The idea that the main character in this story is so aware of being repressed, and creates a version of himself who has had the breakthroughs his other self hasn't had, is very interesting.
