Good Hello.

Every Christmas movie made in the 80's as either a take off on this film, or referenced it in some way. I think a lot of people think they know, "It's a Wonderful Life," but might not have heard or watching it. And Jimmy Stewart is something to behold, in audio or on screen.

"When life was normal." Well... for some, anyway...

A lot of people my age know Donna Reed from Nick at Nite, endlessly re-playing, "The Donna Reed Show." But certainly, Donna Reed is excellent in this movie.

Henry Travers made the role of Clarence famous in the film, but for this show on Lux Radio Theater, they have the fantastic performers, Victor Moore, who sort of fills the same kinds of roles in films of the era, and Victor also appears in the excellent holiday film, "It Happened on Fifth Ave."

I sort of relate to George Bailey. I always wanted to travel and see the world, but I've been stuck in the mid-valley (and adjacent cities) my whole life. So it goes.

You'll probably notice that this broadcast originally aired in March of 1947. A little odd for a Christmas movie, but then again, Gremlins - a movie that is a horror version of "It's A Wonderful Life," was released in June. A lot of movies that are "holiday" films are released at times of year that have nothing to do with the holiday.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:20pm
Austin Rich:

George Bailey is the kind of role that Jimmy Stewart made his career on playing characters like this: old-fashioned American men with good values who struggles against the injustices of the world. So to see him take a late turn in his career and play all those Hitchcock roles, like Rear Window and Vertigo, was incredibly surprising. I think he does an incredible job throughout his career, but playing all those creepy guys in Hitchcock movies was very unexpected.

If you were to combine most of the depictions of Heaven and how people get in and out as its shown in films like this, Heaven is an incredibly bureaucratic place.

I probably never bothered to watch this whole movie until I was in my early 20s, sort of assuming that I knew the story and it was just an old movie. I was sort of blown away at how relevant and modern it was, as a story.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm
Krys O.:

I love It Happened on 5th Avenue.
Avatar 9:35pm
Mr Fab:

Yep, I watched β€œWonderful Life” for a few Christmases in a row during a window when everyone thought it was in the public domain so it would be all over tv every year.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:35pm
Austin Rich:

That is my favorite Christmas movie. And I only saw that one maybe 7 years ago, accidentally one year, with my wife. We adored it!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:36pm
Austin Rich:

"It Happened on 5th Ave," I mean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm

There's a hilarious short film with Victor Moore that's based on the vaudeville classic bit, "Pay the Two Dollars!"
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:37pm

I love how the rich people pretend to be poor, the poor people pretend to be rich, and it's like some sort of Prince And The Pauper farce... but a lot cooler.

Victor Moore is pretty hilarious.

I remember a class I took when I was pursuing my film minor in college, and we watching the "Pottersville" section of "It's A Wonderful Life" as part of our Noir segment.
Avatar 9:46pm
Mr Fab:

I was surprised to see that this aired in March, but it probably wasn’t originally thought of as a Christmas story. More a parable about life’s worth that just happened to have some key scenes set during Christmas. Kinda like how β€œTo Kill A Mockingbird” has sorta become a Halloween movie.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:47pm
Austin Rich:

Exactly!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:48pm

I was looking at release dates for Christmas movies, and a lot of them come out at random times in the year.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:48pm

"Zuzu's Petals" is replaced with "Zuzu's Bell" in this version of the story.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:49pm

"Some bad liquor." Clearly, George Bailey doesn't really drink.
Avatar 9:50pm
Mr Fab:

β€œDie Hard” is set during a Christmas party but was released in July. Again, no one went to see β€œDie Hard” for holiday cheer.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:51pm
Austin Rich:

"Stop biting policemen, Clarance," sort of implies that he's done it before.
Avatar 9:51pm
Mr Fab:

Haha, that’s right- There’s no such thing as bad liquor when you have mixers!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:52pm
Austin Rich:

I never thought about "Die Hard" as a Christmas movie until... oh, maybe 15 years ago? I feel like that's when that cultural meme sort of gained maximum density.
Avatar 9:56pm
Mr Fab:

Yeah, it really has nothing to do with Xmas. That’s just background.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:57pm

You sort of used to have to stretch, looking for holiday material, back in the day. "A Christmas Carol" can only get played so many times.

If you are an Old Hollywood nerd, and you are looking for a incredible "radio" version of different Hollywood people, "You Must Remember This," is an incredible podcast, the host is really knowledgable and incredibly well read / watched, and the way she tells stories about actors is great. Here episodes about Bogart and Bacall are fantastic... and a lot more detailed than these documentaries will get into.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
Austin Rich:

"Treasure of Sierra Madre" is a really great movie... that always feels about 25 minutes too long, for my tastes.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:16pm

I mean, I like it, and it always keeps me thinking... but it always feels too long.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:18pm

It's weird to hear Bogart's son talk about his dad like that.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:19pm

"Who was half in the bag." I think we can take it, as read, that if someone is telling a Bogart story, he is definitely drunk.

One thing I love about Hope and Crosby is that they really do crack each other up when they're riffing, and they really sound like modern comedians. They were both pretty ahead of their time.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
Austin Rich:

Bing Crosby was a Christmas Tradition for DECADES. It is ridiculous to try to really think about how long his career was, and how many times he was still able to find a place in popular culture. It's wild.
  10:29pm
Heather:

He even did that duet with Bowie!!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:30pm

The whistle at the beginning of a radio show is a common theme in old radio, but I love the opening of The Saint more than the one for a show that is actually called, "The Whistler." This one is just better.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
Austin Rich:

Bob Hope's last Comedy Special was in 1998. Let that sink in... his career was crazy long. He had a career as a boxer BEFORE his comedy career that started... in the 20's! Bob Hope's career is wild.

Most Saint episodes are sort of like this... lots of jokes, lots of great dialog, and there's a good chunk of them with Vincent Price in the lead. I do recommend this show!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
Austin Rich:

While not strictly "noir," The Saint often mines a lot of the same content, but with a lot snappier and upbeat dialog. The episodes with the other actors... they're okay. Louis is even the same in a lot of them. But... well... Vincent is just... really, really good...
