Good Hello.

Austin Rich:

We've heard the first installment of "The Thin Man" on Dimestore Radio Theater, sometime last year. This is the follow-up film, one that was also incredibly popular, too. The quality of the "Thin Man" films sort of drops off after the second one, but they are all pretty fun, once you are in love with these characters.

I may have mentioned this the last time we aired a, "Thin Man," story, but there is a podcast, The Thrilling Adventure Hour, which features a running story, "Beyond Belief." It is a "Thin Man" tribute, with the one change that the characters in "Beyond Belief" are needed to solve "supernatural" crimes, unlike Nick and Norah, who just solve regular crimes. The writer's of "Beyond Belief" have talked a lot about their love of the Thin Man movies.

I once lived in an apartment where I would come home from work, and there would be a party happening. But none of the roommates who lived there would be there, just a bunch of people partying. This scene in "After The Thin Man" sort of speaks to that memory.

Austin Rich:

Of course, I selected this particular story because it takes place on New Year's Eve / New Year's Day, but it was originally aired in the Summer. I have a very vivid memory of watching and listening to a lot of shows / stories / movies that were set during the holidays, but I was watching them in the Summer. A tried and true tradition... dating back to at least the 40's!

Hey Austin!
There was a restaurant on the ship I was on last week called “Nick and Nora’s.” My wife and i wondered if we were the only ones on board who got the reference.

Mr. Fab! Always a delight. It's possible you were the only ones. Or, there was a younger generation that thought it was a reference to that Michael Cera movie from 2008.

I don’t know that film. Was it a Thin Man one?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:21pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Mr Fab @9:21
I never saw it either, but it was called, "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist," which sort of says everything about 2008 that you need to know. (It was based on a novel, as I understand it.)

Austin Rich:

An example of a rich person dropping their name, hoping to get out of trouble because of their notoriety. I do appreciate that it doesn't work out for Norah.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:31pm
Austin Rich:

This scene, with them in bed and Norah harassing Nick while he's trying to sleep, is a re-hash of a scene from the first movie. There are a few bits that are sort of retreading their greatest hits from before, which was pretty common in movies that run multiple sequels. (Again... a tradition that dates back to the 40s, at least.)

Heather:

That scene is also true to life in my experience! I liked it a lot!

Happy New Year, all!

Heather! Nice to see you in the chat.

I find a lot of Nick and Norah's relationship to be relatable.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:34pm
Austin Rich:

"Is that all?" "Isn't that enough?"
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:41pm
Austin Rich:

Dashiell Hammett created the characters of Nick and Norah, and wrote the first "Thin Man" novel. Albert Hackett &
Frances Goodrich adapted that novel into the screenplay for the first film, retaining much of the zip of the dialog from the book. For the second film, Dashiell Hammett gets a "story by" credit, but the real writing credit goes to the Hackett & Goodrich screenwriting team. I believe they go on to write the other Thin Man films, but as mentioned before, the quality goes downhill, unfortunately.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:44pm
Austin Rich:

Whoops! I stand corrected: the first three Thin Man movies were by Hackett & Goodrich. The last three were by three different writing teams, which probably explains why the quality drops.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:46pm
Austin Rich:

10 years after the last "Thin Man" movie, a "Thin Man" TV show was launched, with Peter Lawford and Phyllis Kirk as Nick and Norah. The show ran 72 episodes, and re-situated Nick and Norah a couple decades, to make Greenwich Village and The Beat Generation part of the story.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:49pm
Austin Rich:

There have been a number of other "Thin Man" spin-offs in other media, but the last "film" version was made for TV in 1975. Johnny Depp attempted to make a version of the film in 2011, but it never went anywhere.

The characters are much more popular on stage, who have been in different plays since the 40's, and as recently as 2018.

William Powell - Nick - was very popular on Lux Radio Theater, and appeared in 12 different episodes. Only two of them were Thin Man stories.

And there's four more movies after that. I don't remember the baby figuring into the stories, but it was MANY years ago I watched the other ones. Maybe the baby solves crimes?

How far can you get on the crosswords? Like I said: I have to tap out after Wednesday. They get too hard for me after that.

I used to rock them! I was good! But now I play scrabble online and I think I lost my crossword edge.

I know Hodgman works for them, but he really pushes the NYT Puzzle app, with a number of the games on there. I should probably cave in, but I'm trying to use my phone less anyway.

I can't get into Wordle. I think the hipster gene in me just recoils right now. I'm sure in a few years I'll make some comment about how Wordle isn't appreciated nearly as much as it should be.
