I do suppose Alvin Toeffler's summation of the "corporate identity crisis": mass-market demographics that defined the industrial era of civilization were beginning to shrink and split into ever-multiplying, ever-changing types, sizes, colors, and customizations associated w/ shortsighted, tragically myopic and data-obsessed information age ....etc ad nauseum (about the 90s record industry, and society ad large), can be relevant to just about anything..

phat, in the liner notes from Disintegration, it says something along the lines of, "This album was mixed to be played loud, so turn it up." I have always found that to be sound (ahem) advice. Volume really wakes that album up.

@Handy: I'm pragmatically looking at next octish (i should start working in april) and yes, as an undergrad, i worked in the uni's library...

i have all of my physical recorded media organized by strictly alphabetical order, no artificial separations by 'genre'. (it does, however, make djing for a certain genre at a moment's notice more difficult).

I had to add a couple of things to Discogs and realized I was in way over my head. My friend who used to be a copy cataloguer (also at a uni library) thrives on it.

We don't have a ton of records since we only got a turntable up and running again last year after a long lacuna. I went with a basic "still a band" vs. "not still a band" division, alpha within each. For now.

some records are easy to put on discogs, but some have soo many variations.... the matrix and runout are some of the only ways to be sure... sometimes, records are swapped in the sleeves with other pressings... i think that happened with one of my london calling records...
