Zipperhead7:

Hi Gary and Bodegans! Shit, I just saw that Jeff Beck passed away. When I saw him a few years back, he just kind of fucked around with "tasty licks" all night. But his solo on Yardbirds’ "Shapes of Things" is unparalleled – such an avant-garde imagination (the whole break played on one string!), capped with that final brain-freezing blast of treble. And it’s only 30 seconds long. The audio equivalent of DMT and, imho, the greatest rock guitar solo ever. He seemed to work best within the constraints of the three-minute pop song, which he pushed against with the ferocious energy of a young Pete Townshend. Here's a great show from Fillmore West, 12/7/68. Listen to the one note at 34:49 that slips into screaming feedback. A portal into psychotic delorium! The whole show is worth a listen, even if it’s a cruddy audience recording:

Zipperhead7: JEFF BECK IS GONE. Wow. You are correct. 'Shapes of Things' is one of the most important songs of the 20th Century. Other songs with Jeff B. in the YaRdBiRDs are also extremely innovative. And later stuff he did too. One of my favorite lead guitarists.

Downtown Music Gallery is a bodega for creative music. When I went there (have not been there since a year or two pre-pandemic) I try to be firm about my budget and the clerk was very understanding as I repeatedly recompiled my choices, adding / removing / asking for the updated subtotal / repeat.

}Sorry if off topic} Zipperhead7 @ 9:14- Speaking of "raveup." Again, RIP Jeff Beck. I wanted to recommend another Jeff Beck-in-Yardbirds tune that wasn't a hit but an album cut, 'What Do You Want' off the album 'Over, Under, Sideways, Down' from '66. Like 'Shapes of Things' it had a new-for-rock critical socio-political theme (before maybe only heard in folk). And the music arrangement was new, with light-years-ahead innovative guitar by Beck, especially the solo toward the end. I feel safe in saying nothing like that had been heard before.
